                                                              • Adelaide was trying to branch out in her care and study of aquatic animals. To be perfectly fair and honest, she was still learning how best to handle her fish, but she wanted to delve into vivaria that didn’t require so much water, and made transport less…precarious. It had been a minor miracle brought about by her own hand to have brought the aquarium she had intact, with every single fish having survived the journey. She had, regrettably, lost a few of the more sensitive sea anemone in the days following, but the coral had remained strong due to her careful diligence and many repetitions.

She was in the process of having a new aquarium built so that she may collect some of the local freshwater fish, but she wanted frogs. She wanted newts. She wanted a boomerang salamander from four hundred million years ago!

Which meant creating a paludarium that best suited such creatures’ needs. Which meant research. Resource building. Commissioning a suitable glass case from the nearest recommended glassblower. She had done so over the course of the last month (but felt and was much, much longer than that), and now was finally at the stage of creation where artistry wed with nature, even if she had to chain them together at the altar herself. She had the soil, water, driftwood, branches, plants, and rocks at hand, now she just had to figure out the perfect set up. She had plenty of time for it. Plenty of time to focus on this and not on other, far less important things, such as how nobody liked her and she would die alone and friendless were it not for her fish. And Riven.

Who needed human friends, or even lovers, when she would have frogs?

A knock at the door interrupted such useless thoughts as she was half in the enormous glass case, pushing soil around. She frowned. This had not happened in the thirty previous iterations, so what was different this time? She pushed herself out, took off her gloves and apron, and tried to smooth back frazzled strands of hair as she approached the door to her quarters. An idea of who it may be occurred to her just as she started opening the door, and Adelaide immediately felt her confusion sweep into resentful annoyance as she looked up to see Lord Falker’s stupid face.

"I should’ve guessed it’d be you," she huffed, and moved to shut the door in his stupid, ugly, wretched face.

                                                      SVERRE ⏲ FALKER
                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

Twenty-four days. Sverre had been stuck in this dreadful day for almost four weeks now. At first, he thought he'd try to make the best of it. That was the case most of the time. He'd check upon Fane, alternate checking up on Irene for the sake of his sanity, and he knew he wouldn't have to worry about a hangover for a while, so drinking was a free action. He hadn't the faintest idea what that gremlin was up to, but knowing Adelaide, it'd be quite a while before the calendar would be allowed to move forward once again. And for a while, that was enough for him.

                                                      Until it got annoying.

By about his nineteenth loop, Sverre was bored. This was boring now. And it didn't stop there. Day after day, he counted down with the fingers of his hand. That was the amount of time he'd give the dumbass until he started making whatever her issue was his problem. Five. Ideally, she would've learned by now to leave things be. But from the moment that kid set foot in Utopia, Sverre could tell that this was far from the case. Four. Sverre had been fairly good about avoiding her giving her time to grow on her own, but enough was enough. Three. This would not become another six-hundred day fiasco. He'd given her enough leeway with sub-one-hundred loops already. Two. That, and this would give him an excuse to do what he probably should've done from the beginning. Ah, the pains of being a responsible, gentlemanly adult.

One. Time to poke the bear cub.

It was about mid-afternoon when Sverre finally made his way to the princess's quarters. Thankfully, he had been given ample time to work on what he wanted to say to the little menace. The only thing holding him back at this point was the ridiculous headache he was experiencing from all the rewinding that's been done so far. It was very likely that the reasoning behind the constant looping would annoy him as well, as it often had. Most times, anyway.

Sverre hung his head down as he neared her door. It really had been so quick, hadn't it? Six years. Seeing Fane was enough of a moped ride as is with all of their history, but technically speaking, he'd spent even more time with this toddler than he had with anyone else in the royal palace. And...he ditched. It's been obvious that he'd been too harsh with her when it was time to go. He needed to, and he probably would've done it again if he was being honest with himself. It was just...the whole thing was a mess. Scratching his head in frustration, he took in a deep breath. Just stick to the script. But when he finally got to Adelaide's door, Sverre hesitated.

A part of him just wanted to go back to riding the wave. This really wasn't the worst looping period so far. He could just leave it alone. That's what she seemed to want. Was he even the best person to be going about this? Sure, he seemed to be one of the only people that was aware of her nonsense. But there were babysitters here already, right? Carers for the other kids that went here? He could just turn around. It'd be easier to just turn around. Addie deserved better than him just turning around.

                                                      Knock knock.

                                                      "I should’ve guessed it’d be you."

                                                      "Hey, so I kno—"

                                                      SLAM!

                                                      "OW! ******** RUDE a**!"

The first attempt was a total bust. Attempts two through eleven were none the better. And by attempt number fifteen, Sverre wasn't even sure why he was bothering. She wasn't his sister, and she never would be. But then that voice in the back of his head would tell him he was being an a*****e for thinking that way. Memories of those nearly two years of looping came back. The yelling. The crying. The trying. God, they tried so ******** hard. And so he'd try his hardest now. That was when it hit him. He spent the rest of his now thirty-ninth loop preparing. And by his fortieth loop, he was as ready as he'd ever be.

Sverre knocked again, far more urgently than before. "A stray cat has fallen into the river! In Block-O City! Start rowing the new rescue boat!" He then paused for a brief moment before knocking again, this time even louder. "HEY!" It was a stupid ******** gambit, but he was genuinely losing it and he couldn't think of anything else at this point. Sverre wasn't even sure if she'd remember that dumb ad they acted out at an intermission once. He couldn't remember the play, so it could've been one she didn't like. But she did really like that ad, so much so that Block-Os became her entire life for a little while. For a few days that were also months, it was all she could think to do with her time. Sverre had only played with her a handful of times then, but damn was she excited each time he did. Hopefully that joy held up.

No doubt he had only come to her to complain about her looping, but quite frankly he deserved the headaches, and that was that. No more dwelling on Lord Falker. No more wondering what he had wanted. No more–

Should she incorporate a waterfall? No, it looked terrible in the corner, she should try something in the center–

                                                                Knock knock knock!

                                                      SVERRE ⏲ FALKER
                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

Placing his arm horizontally on the door, Sverre leaned in to rest his head. I'm cooked, aren't I? At this rate, that brat's going to bring me to the point where I go catatonic or something! Picking a foot up, he impatiently began tapping his toe against the floor. Then again, was it really too much to ask to have her get over here in under 5.4321 seconds? That was supposed to be the royal standard. ******** p***k.

                                                      "Okay, that wasn't a good one bu—ah!"

While his mind had been alerted to the sudden shift in the position in the door, noting each millimeter of movement, his body couldn't react in time. The shift in his own weight as gravity struck him down for his hubris felt like falling down from high atop a mountain, and it felt like forever before his body was able to respond. But it wasn't so bad; by the time the full visage of Adelaide Ilydiot Calvino was visible, he was basically fully composed.

"What? What?! Stop being so embarrassing in front of my room, how old do you think I am?"

Tilting his head up ever-so-slightly to add gravitas to the way he looked down upon her, Sverre smirked. "Hm...you're about...60 or so now, if we count all your loops?" Sverre most certainly wasn't but it was fun to tease the kid. So much so, in fact, that he forgot that he was here to get her to chill the ******** out. On the other hand, if she overreacts like the kid she is, I'll still feel like I've accomplished something. Peering eyes looked over the head of brunette hair that just barely poked out from the bottom of his line of sight and into her room for the first time. Bewildered, he cocked his head to the side and tilted his neck down to be extra judgy.

"Addie what even is all that? Some form of over the top bird coop?"

God, she was infuriating. If their positions within the monarchy were switched, he would have her sent straight to time out. Could he ask Fane to send her to time out? Perhaps another time. Closing his eyes, Sverre let out a deep sigh. "Look, whatever you're doing...let me help you out," he continued nonchalantly. Unable to keep her eyes on the time gremlin for long, he brought his eyes up to the ceiling with a pout.

"It'll go better if you have someone to bounce off of. Besides, I..."

Sverre's voice trailed off as he crossed his arms. His hands clenched his upper arms tightly as he looked up to Chronesian Jesus for strength. Taking in a deep breath, his eyes settled back down to Adelaide's visage."I figure I've got some making up to do," he said hurriedly, his voice a near-whisper. His foot had been tapping the floor again, spurred by how uncomfortably those words came out of his mouth. As far as he was concerned, after all, Sverre had done what he needed to do. But given the way Addie had been acting towards him, he supposed that she might not see things that way...and that she might have had good reason for that. Maybe.

                                                              • "Hm...you're about...60 or so now, if we count all your loops?" he shot back with such a pompous smirk that she was tempted to slam the door back into his face. Her grip tightened over the door handle as she glowered up at his smug, stupid, stupid face.

"If that’s all you have to say–"

"Addie what even is all that? Some form of over the top bird coop?" he pestered, easily peering over her head into her room like some rascally, nosy scoundrel! For a moment she nearly leaned up on tiptoe to try to block his eyes, but, of course, she remembered just in time that no amount of tiptoe would do such a thing. Only time would allow her to grow to do so, and a few seconds wasn’t nearly enough.

"No!" she snapped instead, "It’s none of your business!"

His offer to help had her rolling her eyes on reflex. Oh, how gracious of him, how grand of the Lord Falker to extend his hand to the poor little princess! Certainly, it had nothing to do with getting the day to end faster so that he could move on with his merry little life, and go back to fawning over her brother! How inconvenient of her to get her hooks into the thread of time and loop it over again so tightly it made his head want to pop! However else could he concentrate enough to aim his lips?

Saints, her time in Utopia would have been so much better if he wasn’t here to ruin it, him and Stefan both! At least she would have been in her loops alone again, no one present to complain about real days, or accuse her of keeping them in cages, or to scream at her to just let them go!

Then he spoke so quietly she had to strain to hear it, and when she did, the tightening of her chest threatened to choke her. Clearly, it had to be some sort of allergic reaction to–to dust, or pollen in the air, and that’s why her eyes began to burn and her nose to run.

"Oh? For what?" she said tightly, refusing to acknowledge how loudly she had to sniffle. "For incessantly knocking on my door? For all the times you’ve mocked me? Or for yelling at me and then leaving me? Because all that’s water under the bridge."

Her voice cracked. She cleared her throat and tried to breathe through her nose before exhaling through her mouth.

"So, no need to bother. This has been a disaster anyway, so I’ll loop back only once more for a clean slate, and you can go back to your business. Good day, Lord Falker."

She stepped back to begin shutting the door again.

                                                      SVERRE ⏲ FALKER
                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

Okay, scratch the maybe. The faint sniffles he heard were proof enough that he’d ******** up. Big time. Of course, he already knew that deep down. He never liked the way he had to cut off Adds. But at the time, he really didn’t know what better way there was to get her to let him leave. Hell, he was pretty sure that even now her brain was way too underdeveloped for things to have gone differently if it’d been some version of today that he’d done it. What was he supposed to have done, waited for her to be an adult? He’d be like 40 or something by then; practically a walking corpse!

                                                      "Oh? For what?"

                                                      "Look, you know wha-"

"For incessantly knocking on my door?"

                                                      "Incessantly?"

"For all the times you’ve mocked me?"

                                                      "Listen, I jus-”

"Or for yelling at me and then leaving me? Because all that’s water under the bridge."

Sverre’s frustration had been growing for quite a bit there, with a single eyebrow twitching like crazy as the brat before him went on and on and on. But with the voice crack, the twitching stopped. The intense glare he was giving her softened instantly. Instead, Sverre’s eyes went to the ground in defeat. He had no retort there. And as Adelaide would make what she wanted to be a closing statement, the duke felt rightfully defeated. Keyword: rightfully. He didn’t have a way of bullshitting his way out of that one. Hearing the door start to creek to a close, Sverre almost considered letting things end like his princess had wanted to.

                                                      Almost.

But when did he ever let that snob of a preschooler have her way?

His hand caught the door before Adelaide closed it completely, not a crack too soon. With strength far beyond hers, he was easily able to keep it open as well. Or maybe with a bit of effort. The ******** have they been feeding her? No, he couldn’t let that distract him. That moral compass of his was beating him over the head too much already. Or maybe he was just tired of the way things were between them. Either way, he knew what he had to say. "I didn’t know what else to do!" The exclamation came out softer than the last time he’d raised his voice to her, but it still felt uncomfortable. Leaning forward, he placed his head onto the door.

"I didn’t…I shouldn’t have done that to you, Adds. Believe me, I know," continued the duke weakly. Closing his eyes and bringing his features in, he let in a deep breath before releasing. "Everything was just...moving so fast. How things ended with your dad, Fane taking over, her getting a room right next to his…I couldn’t stay there. I couldn’t. And you weren’t letting me do what I needed to do, so I…I lashed out like a total a**." Lifting his head up, Sverre looked up and away as he let out a sigh.

"So whatever it is, even if it’s pouring you tea for a change, even if it ends up taking even more loops and I end up in a migraine so bad my head explodes…just let me try to pay my dues, alright? I’d take it back if I could, but I’m not like you. This is all I got."

Those last few words came out like Sverre was already defeated, which wasn’t a feeling he allowed himself to feel very often. But if this didn’t work, that’d be more painful than…well, maybe not quite as painful as the headaches, but it’d still suck! Like a lot! Gentlemen were supposed to be the kind of people kids looked up to, after all. And a long time ago, Adds did look up to him. But now she was…rightfully mad at him. Quite hurt as well. He hated that he hurt her even then, but hearing it now? Knowing that she’d held onto that all this time, which must’ve been even longer for her? It was like getting run over by a moped.

If she didn’t want anything to do with him after this, that was fine. Maybe he deserved it. But ********, would he do anything if he could just turn back the clock and stop deserving it. Deserving s**t sucked. And it probably sucked for Adelaide too. But it made sense that he couldn’t; God had to nerf him somehow. But right now, Sverre really wished…that he’d never have to hear a voice crack like that again. That and that they’d get to tomorrow. He was going on a beautiful peoples night with Anika to gossip and he’d really been looking forward to that.

                                                              • Adelaide wasn’t expecting the hand that lashed out to stop the door from closing, but that was hardly going to stop her from digging her heels in to push back!

                                                                "Stop that! Get off–"

"I didn’t know what else to do!"

She stopped, stunned, both at his words and the tone in which he spoke them with. It was uncomfortably vulnerable, and the longer he went on the more his voice became a potent pollen to her eyes, which blurred over with allergy induced tears and nothing more. Slumping against the door, she struggled to keep her breathing steady, a whimper building and building and building up her throat that she bit her lip to keep contained. She didn’t want to let him try. All she wanted was to let him try. She wanted him to leave, she wanted him to get on his knees and grovel for forgiveness. She hated him and she wanted him back, she loved him and she wanted to never see his face again.

Saints, she wanted him to try. He was the only one who ever had, the only one to try to anywhere near the degree she always did. It was what had made the betrayal of his departure all the worse. Rather than be an exception to the rule, he had proven it true: the only one she could count on was herself. It was a rule true not just in the palace, but here in Utopia, as well. Truer, in some ways.

"If I let you try, you’ll leave again," she told him, hard certainty beneath the watery wobble. "Nothing’s changed. Daddy’s still in prison, Stefan’s still engaged, and her room is still next to his. The only difference now is that we’re not in Chronos, but as soon as we go back? They’ll probably get married. He’ll become acting king, and everyone and their grandfathers are going to go back to trying to kill him for his stupid policies, and I’ll loop, and I’ll loop, and I’ll loop to stop it from happening because I’m the only one who can, and it’ll get to be too much, and you’ll remember you hate me and leave again."

                                                      SVERRE ⏲ FALKER
                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

At some point, the unexpected amount of resistance that someone Adelaide’s age should not have been capable of all finally petered out. That is to say that Sverre’s own unfathomable might had finally become too much for her to bear. Yep, that was definitely what was going on. Unfortunately, this sudden change also meant that he would’ve most certainly stumbled forward. Thankfully, his keen senses allowed him to adjust his might before any such blunder; that is to say he only went an extra step or so on accident. Sverre’s own breathing had become labored, similar to his princess, but it wasn’t because she tired him out or anything. That would be absurd. In truth, it was a gentleman’s duty to remain at least somewhat humble. A difficult task for most, and yet for Sverre it was as easy as pie.

If only the rest of this situation were so simple.

Along with Adds no longer pushing back as hard, Sverre also noticed his princess’s…muffled sniffles? Is she…getting ill? No, that doesn’t make sense. It was so sudden. Must just be allergies. Whatever the case, Sverre hoped that she at least had been able to be cognizant enough to understand him despite whatever was ailing her out of the blue. From the words that came out of Addie’s mouth next, though, the consensus was…

"If I let you try, you’ll leave again,"

”Sorry, Ms. Mature Young Woman, but I’m seeing a flaw or two with your logic here,” began Sverre, dropping any gentlemanly pretense. This wasn’t a matter of upholding his status as the most respectable man in Utopia. Adelaide had already seen him as far worse, and he honestly wasn’t sure if that’d ever change. But she didn’t need to feel like this. ”Firstly, what in the name of Chronesian Jesus do you think I could possibly remember about you that would make me think any differently about you? Really think about that one.” Even if there was a loop he didn’t recall in which she had accidentally thrown out his entire pocket watch collection, she was smart enough to at least have looped that one out of existence. Clearly there were no issues there. ”And if I hear even one comment about Alzheimer's, I’m going to address you with a baby voice for the rest of your days,” he added with a dry laugh, then a sniffle.

”Me leaving was never about me hating you, Adelaide. Now are you prolific when it comes to giving me mind-numbing headaches with your loops? Yes. Are you selfish? Definitely? And that punching stunt will not be so easily forgiven.”

Lifting himself off the door, a somewhat playfully indignant Sverre stood up straight and crossed his arms with a loud huff. ”But luckily for you, I find you really hard to hate.” The more he spoke, the more the duke’s own voice began to wobble. A tear threatened to fall, but he flicked his head and fought it off. For a moment, Sverre felt victorious. And then it fell down anyway. And another. And another still. ”I’m just…” continued the duke as he used a hand to wipe away the bothersome tears that were coming out of his bothersome eyes for…just how much he’d ******** up with Adds. ”Adelaide Ilyria Calvino III, I am truly, terribly, sorry.” No apology felt adequate, nor did he figure that someone as good at being a pain in his a** like Addie would ever accept one, but she deserved one nonetheless. Not because Sverre was a gentleman. Not because Adelaide was his princess. But because she was his Addie, and he knew now just how big of an impact their falling out had on her.

                                                              • "What do you know," Adelaide finally let slip the building whimper when he accused her of having flawed logic. Her vision was blurring so badly now that her view of her room was merely a smear of color, her shoulder heavy against the door. She was right, of course she was right, he had shown nothing but disdain for her since they first saw each other’s faces here. How could he not still hate and blame her for how they parted? How could he not hate her for all the days she had put him through, for all the extra time that had simply been wasted effort in the end?

She opened her mouth to ask if his memory was truly that bad, but his threat had her coughing out a laugh instead, and she leaned her temple against the woodgrain, tears beginning to drip down her cheeks. Because she had laughed too hard, obviously, and that was a terrible combination when she was already suffering from allergies.

"But I was part of it," she choked out, turtling into her collar a little, a physical retreat from the sins he had listed out, but also from the prospect that he didn’t hate her, and perhaps never truly had, because that didn’t make sense. There wasn’t a single person who had experienced her loops who didn’t wind up hating her for it. Him, Vally, daddy, Lady Farrah, Sir Haruka…if she looped too close to the sun, Rivvy would become one of those number, too. It simply couldn’t be true. He had to be lying, so she would have to put a stop to any further efforts to get close to her before he left again. He had to be lying, because if he wasn’t…then she had kept attempting to keep space between them for…what?

"I made it worse, especially at the end. I know I did, so don’t–are you crying?"

The apology pierced through her all the harder to hear the agony in his voice, and she jerked back to throw the door open, aghast and stricken to find she had been right. His stupid features were made even uglier with the way his face was screwed up the way it was, tears pouring out of his eyes, and it made her own face contort with the effort to hold back more of her own.

"You’re not–you’re not allowed to–to CRRRRRRRYYYYYYYY–" she found herself keening out like a wounded dog, and time seemed to loop back six years as she flung herself into his chest to sob against him. "STUPIDDDDDDDD!!!"

                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

At the very millisecond in which Adelaide’s door began to creak open, Sverre did his best to wipe his tears away with the back of his hand rubbing left to right across his eyes. It wasn’t that he was ashamed of them, mind you. But Addie clearly didn’t understand what was going on. He wasn’t crying. He was weeping in a gentlemanly fashion. It was a subtle difference, but an important one nonetheless.

That she couldn’t discern the difference wasn’t too surprising. She was still just a kid, after all. A dumb, rude, bratty kid who was always using time as if it were one of her stuffed animals. To be played with however the ******** she felt like playing with it. No sense of responsibility on the matter what-so-ever. An absolute gremlin of a princess. Clearly a grand test of his patience from the almighty.

Thinking all that was supposed to help stop the crying. It only made his lips tremble harder. The tears come out faster. And when she came to grasp him in her little arms? Dig her head into her chest? Things really took a nosedive. His arms had risen up out of surprise. But it wasn’t so much that she came at him like that. No, the more jarring part was just how high up her head reached now. He was certain it was less stark of a difference than Addie herself would’ve preferred, but a sign of how long it had been nonetheless.

                                                      I’M STUPID?”

Swiftly did his arms swoop back down, pulling Adelaide into a tight embrace. ”Y-YOU’RE TH-THE DUMB ONEEEEEEE!”, said Sverre between the most distinguished sniffles known to man. ”I…muh-made it worse t-too…so…stop putting it all on you, dummy!” His head rested atop hers, and that he could do that now in the first place only made him sob harder. ”And y-y…y-ou’re crying t-too, y’know! Wh-why do you get to but I don’t?? HUH??? Gone was any pretense of gentlemanliness. Sverre didn’t need that right now. All Sverre really needed was to be Sverre and for Addie to be Addie and to hold her and hold her and attempt to make up for all the times he missed out on doing just that.

                                                      God, what an annoying kid!

                                                              • Sverre’s arms closed around her in a warm, familiar embrace, the scent of his new cologne washing over her in a wave as she buried her face and her tears into his vest. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been held–but no, that was a lie. Because she remembered all too perfectly well that the last time had been in a moment of weakness with Stefan, where she had crawled her way into his arms like an aloof cat, and let him stroke her hair until she was assured of his permanency, upon which she then promptly wiped the moment away from the fabric of time so that no one could ever accuse her of sentimentality. The last embrace she had kept, however? That, she was less certain. She remembered how often Sverre had cradled her against him during the disaster of her attempts to keep her daddy from being taken away, but had he held her in that last time? Had it been made real?

Adelaide couldn’t wonder for long, not when she could feel the tears dripping into her hair as Sverre’s chin settled atop her head, a crown she hadn’t quite realized how desperately she had missed until his weight was upon her again, and she cried all the harder for it. How dare he? How dare he do this to her? How dare he cry and have the audacity to call her dumb! She scolded him right back, an incoherent mess of wet sobs and muffled cries that was surely soaking through his vest into his shirt as she clung to him.

                                                                "B-Brrcshh I’mma prrnshsss, ‘n’ s’weegrlll f’r you t’cryyyyyyyy, ‘m m-mraking i’a law, ‘n you’ll be m’jester, becraush tha’ll be the pun’shmen, n’you’ll jingle misherbly ‘cross the floor when I crall f’r you, ‘n’--"

She really did try to carry on, to rile herself up into something more heated that would dry up both their tears, but Sverre had cracked something within her so wide open that she couldn’t push it back closed in that moment. All Adelaide could do was dissolve into an ocean of grief, wailing like the child she would have otherwise vehemently denied that she was. Minutes passed as they drained out their woes, and, exhausted, Adelaide pulled her head away only to sit her chin on his shoulder, sobbing out:

"I missed you, you stupid! Do you know what I’ve had to go through without you? Faney died so much, and so did his stupid fiancée, and if I tried to let her stay dead so that you could come back, Faney would ruin it by being sad, and Vally’s on his side about everything, and there was no one I could talk to!" She took a gasping, shuddering pause, tears still slipping unbidden down her cheeks. Would they ever dry up? Then, "You’re right, none of this’s my fault, it’s yours, so now you have to stay and take responsibility, and if you try to leave I’ll lock you up and make you my jester for real!"

                                                      SVERRE ⏲ FALKER
                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

The more Sverre held Addie in his arms, the more he realized just how badly he missed having her in them. Being able to console her when she was down. Congratulating her on her successes, even if they did take a few loops for her to get right. But who among them got things right the first time? Certainly not him. At least not with anything Calvino-related, anyway. And yet they still gave him the opportunity to try again. His Adds was giving him a chance to try again.

                                                      That was pretty ******** sick.

If only he could spend an eternity in this moment. In that way, Sverre found himself a little jealous of the child squeezing him with all her child might. He knew not to say that out loud, of course. Surely she’d never let him forget it. But it was true. Addie quite literally had all the time in the world, more or less. She could live her days anyway she wanted. Every way she wanted. And yeah, he was hitched along for the ride most of the time. But it wasn’t like it was something he had any control over. What Sverre could control, however, was how long he kept his own arms wrapped tight around his favorite little dumbass and cried his heart out.

Addie would go on to mumble something while she continued to keep her face pressed into his chest, the reverberations causing him to let out a chuckle. Something something…majestic? Yeah, this moment was pretty majestic. ”I feel the same way, squirt!” exclaimed Sverre between still-wild sobs.

The two would go on to spend a good amount of time just hugging and crying and letting it all out. And there was a lot to let out. More than he ever realized. No, that’s not true. He’d known for a long time now just how badly he missed her. Almost as bad as he missed Fane. Or maybe even about the same, just in a different sense. She was like the little sister his parents “had too much of a headache dealing with him to have” or something. Whatever that meant.

Adelaide would be the first one to break away from the hug, going on to try and put to words just how bad it had been without him. It was a lot to take in, honestly. Damn, Lily’s got her claws in Fane deeper than I thought. Also, dying???? Though that did sort of explain how well Addie seemed to handle things on the night of the explosion. God, that’s terrible. But maybe it didn’t have to keep happening. Maybe if they both brought this to Fane, Sverre could get him to reconsider developing a moped militia. If only for his own safety.

Sverre would’ve liked to think of other options, but that would have to wait since Adelaide, being Adelaide, kept talking and ruined the moment completely.

"You’re right, none of this’s my fault, it’s blah blah responsiblah blah blah jester blah!"

Immediately did the duke release his arms from her. The tears stopped falling. His smile and innocence: gone. Clearly she was less deserving of his remorse than he’d thought. ”Oh yeah?” Sverre would place his hands on his hips, a brow twitching. His frown shifted to a disapproving scowl as he gave her the stink eye. Who did she think she was, queen of Chronos? No way Fane would ever enforce a decree that ******** dumb. It’d be a complete waste of Sverre’s many talents. Passing his judgment, Sverre would go on to raise a hand…and pat Addie’s little head. She was so ******** lucky he was forgiving and merciful like the Chronesian Jesus.

”Guess I have no choice then, huh?” asked Sverre playfully, a little smirk on his face.

Eyes lifting off her for a moment, the state of her room at present caught his attention. ”And since you’ve made such an official declaration that I should stay by your side, it only makes sense for me to get to know what the hell you’ve got going on in there.” Putting his other hand parallel with his brows, he leaned his head forward and squinted. It looked like there were a hunk of glass about as tall as he was, some rocks, and…dirt?

”So is this like...like a garden or something? I can respect the commitment to cleanliness, but I think it’s gonna be hard to water your plants since you’re…well, y’know.”

Luckily, that seemed to be the main issue at this point. That meant that she wouldn’t have to loop again to fix it, right?

                                                      …Right?

                                                              • When Sevvy’s arms fell away from her, for a moment Adelaide was filled with the terrifying certainty that she had said the wrong thing again, the sort of thing that would make him leave again, this time for good. Then his hand was on her head, a stupid little smirk on his face, and everything was–maybe not perfect, but it was good. Palms rubbing away the tears on her cheeks, she leaned into the touch with a shuddered sniffle, still feeling out of sorts. She hadn’t cried that hard in quite a while, and now exhaustion pulled at her limbs. Shaking her head, she took the hand on her crown, and led him further in, letting the door swing shut behind them.

"Shut up," she sniffed, too tired to truly get riled up over the poke to her height. "It’s a paludarium, you know, like an aquarium, but it incorporates terrestrial elements, not just aquatic."

Her other hand gestured to the aquariums that stood at the far end of her receiving room, away from the walls so that anyone could circle around and between them to view the fish from different angles. Among her pride and joy, each tank was a little world of oceanic colors, individual creatures swimming among various corals, anemones, and grasses that she had installed herself, with the occasional aid of her ladies-in-waiting. Had Sevvy ever seen such wonders before? She had only begun her hobby three years ago, after all.

"I want to start keeping more amphibious creatures, like frogs and salamanders," she continued, letting go of his hand to approach her latest project. "But I have to make the perfect environment for them to keep them healthy. My ideas have been…uncooperative."

Adelaide had no intention of apologizing for how many times she had looped the day this time, not when she had needed the time away, and not when it had resulted in Sverre here, in this moment. Still, she supposed he ought to know, since he had asked.

                                                      SVERRE ⏲ FALKER
                                                      DUKE OF CHRONOS

It really was unfair how precious Addie was. You’d think Sverre would be immune to her by now or something with all the bullshit she’d put him through already. Or that, given that she was a solid sixteen or so by now, that she wouldn’t be able to just be cute and he’d forget all about the previously mentioned bullshit. And yet here he was, completely ready to get to work on the exact thing that had been giving him such a killer headache. Not even just to remedy that, even; he really wanted this kid to see her project through.

She’d really have to show him how she did that s**t sometime.

For now, he couldn’t help but hum in satisfaction as Addie reacted about as well as any child would to his teasing. Yes, Sverre was aware that his princess was a “teenager” now, but to him she’d be a child until she could say otherwise to him eye-to-eye without a step stool or something. So basically never. As Adds went on to explain what her not–as-little project as Sverre continued to stare blankly at the mass of materials.

                                                      ”So…like a zoo?”

As she walked off towards her pet project, speaking more on her expectations and the issues she’d been having thus far, it was…strange. Looking at her, Sverre felt as though he was looking at a different person from the one he’d known all those years ago altogether. Or not quite a different one. Adelaide always sort of had an interest in animals, he supposed. She’d just gone from simply wanting a legion of plushies to having real animals as well. Still, the feeling of that dissonance sucked a**. He’d missed out on a lot, hadn’t he?

But it’d be cool to find out about all he missed out on with her. And it wasn’t like either of them wouldn’t have the time to do so. Stepping into the room, his eyes scanned around to get a better feel of things. ”So how much research have you done so far to try and put this together? It for sure sounds like you read into the different environmental needs for the species you’re considering, but how much space are you allotting for each type of animal? What about food options?” Sverre might not have known what a Palladarium was, that is to say that he was choosing to be humble and act as such, but he did know a thing or two about wanting to keep an animal that would not survive where you wanted to take it.

Although maybe here I could stick one in the freezer and it’d be okay…gonna have to remember that one for later.

For now, he was content with figuring out this mess with Adds. Definitely was going to have get around to that whole Fane and Lily dying thing too, but zoo s**t felt like a good enough start.
