First Year's Defense Against the Dark Arts class is held at 3:00pm

Located on Hogwarts' third floor is the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. The room is bright with the curtains of the large windows always open. The windows themselves will sometimes be open depending on the weather. At the head of the classroom, there is Professor Kim's desk and a chalkboard, which is usually full of seemingly random notes but they'll usually eventually relate to a lesson.

Eric was ready and waiting for the new group of first years. It was always interesting to see the new personalities he’d be getting and see if there was anyone likely to cause him trouble. At least today was an easy lesson. Lumos and Nox. He didn’t quite understand why these spells were taught in Defense Against the Dark Arts and not Charms, but it was in his curriculum, so he was going to teach it. He waited for the kids to file in, and once they all seemed accounted for, he gave his best smile.

“Hello everyone, and welcome to Defense Against the Dark Arts. I’m sure a good portion of you know what you’re getting into in this class, but in case you don’t, well, the name is pretty self-explanatory. For the most part, we’ll be teaching defensive magic, as well as studying certain parts of the dark arts in hopes of teaching you how to protect yourself against them.” He then moved towards the chalkboard. “We’re starting off with a pretty easy set of spells today. Lumos and Nox. For those of you who’ve grown up in magical houses, I imagine you’ll be pretty familiar with these spells. They’re one of the base skills of magic if you ask me. For those of you who don’t know them, Lumos creates light at the tip of your wand, while Nox does the reverse. Lumos can also help reveal certain magically hidden items, though it will depend entirely on the spell used to do the hiding.” He thought for another moment before adding,“Also, supposedly, if you aren’t careful, this spell can catch your wand on fire…I have never seen that, but you know, be careful, I guess.

Eric had all sorts of random facts in his head about this spell, but he figured the kids wouldn’t want a lecture on how the spell was invented or the surprising drama between the original inventor and someone who claimed to invent it first. He’d tell Rowan later. Supposing she didn’t already know, which, knowing his girlfriend, was a definite possibility.

“Now, everyone, raise your wands.” Eric grabbed his wand and held it in front of him. “You’re going to move your wand in a circle, sort of like a loop on a roller coaster,” he demonstrated the movement, “and say the words Lumos.” He did just that, and immediately a bright light appeared at the end of his wand. “Then, we go to Nox. For this, you’ll move your wand in the shape of a wave and say the incantation.” As he did, the light went out. “Nox is one of the easiest spells to perform non-verbally, but don’t worry about that part quite yet. Probably best to learn how to perform magic before you try it non-verbally.”

He glanced around the room, noting each student’s performance of the spell. “What I’m going to have you do now is practice these two until you feel comfortable with them. Once you are, place your wand on your desk and try it again. You should be able to light it without even holding it. If you’re feeling really ambitious, you can just keep moving it farther away and see how it goes. If you have any questions, raise your hands and I’ll come over. Let’s give it a go,” he said, dismissing them to try it on their own.

Eric was finishing up the last few things to get the classroom ready for the new students. It was always interesting to start with the new group of first years, to see the personalities he’d be teaching for the next four years. Who'd be insufferable and who'd be the teacher's pet? He had at least one of each every year without fail. As strange as it sounded, that was part of what he loved about the job. Seeing the new students and watching how they would grow throughout their time at Hogwarts. He hadn't been teaching for nearly as long as many of the other professors here, but he'd already had students go on to do pretty amazing things. Healers, cursebreakers, even some training to be Aurors.

He glanced down at his wristwatch before nodding to himself. They'd be coming in any minute now. As if on cue, he heard the first sounds of students moving to the classroom. He watched closely as each of them entered, seeing which ones he could remember from the sorting ceremony. Once they had all filed in and taken their seats, he smiled and began.

"Welcome, everyone. I'm Professor Eric Kim, and I'm your Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Obviously. And, barring any drastic events, will be for the next four years." He leaned against his desk, then continued. "Today, we are going to start with learning what, at least in my opinion, is one of the most important spells you will learn. Protego. The shield spell. If you ever find yourself on the opposite end of an unfriendly spell, this could save your life. It will block the majority of spells, as well as physical forces."

He pushed himself from the desk and stood up straight. "Now, I've found the best way to learn is just by doing. So, I want all of you to stand up, grab your wands, and try it. Take your wand in front of you and quickly raise it in a straight line, saying 'Protego'. I don't expect you to get it perfect today. You might not be able to cast it at all, but this is pretty much the first time you're using magic. It may be an innate ability, but that doesn't mean you can master it right off. I'll come around and offer any help I can as you're figuring it out."

It had been a very busy first day, and Via was starting to feel the fatigue by the time she walked into her last class for the afternoon. Defense Against the Dark Arts - basically self defense for wizards. It was definitely important, but she hoped she'd never need to use it.

Taking her seat, she waited for the other students to file in before listening to Professor Kim's introduction. He kept it quite short and simple, before explaining the protection charm they would be practicing. 'Protego,' she thought, paying close attention to the pronunciation as well as the wand movement he described. She had learned from Charms and Transfiguration that both enunciation and wand movement were important with casting a spell, as well as focus and intention.

When they were given permission to start practicing, Via stood up and took a bit of space around herself, before slowly drawing her wand. Taking a slow breath, she honed her focus, feeling the warmth of the wood in her palm. "Protego!" she pronounced with conviction, raising her arm straight up. She felt a tingling sensation wash over her as a shimmering dome flowed from the tip of her wand like a fountain, encapsulating her body. It was barely visible, but it was there. She wasn't sure of its strength without testing it against an opposing force, but she had produced something. For that, she could be satisfied.
