Hi, folks!

I got a vintage Canon AE-1 for Christmas and my brother had a compatible macro lens he gave me. I've been playing around with it, but I'd like to know if there are any helpful tips or tricks to macro photography, be it film or digital!

Update: Here's some things I've found out since posting this, though exploration with my camera

- Dedicated macro lenses you want to be about 15-30cm away from your subject, it seems
- Larger aperture for blurry backgrounds, smaller for crisper
- At least with my lens, it seems like only what's inside the centre circle will ever come into focus. Played with this at multiple distances and settings

Oh man, for Chanukah I got a macro lens for my digital camera! Seems we're both venturing into the world of macro photography. x3 Since I'm so new to the lens, I sadly don't have any tips, but as we learn we should definitely share our findings! biggrin

That's awesome! I'll definitely share any of my tips once I have a few. I'm going to try my lens out tomorrow some more and practise on my houseplants biggrin

My macro is actually 2 pieces, which is neat. A Hanimex 200mm macro lens with a Makinon 2x converter attached to it! It's super neat. The zoom is incredible. I took a couple photos already with it but I haven't had the film developed yet so I don't know how it turned out gonk

Damn, I think that lens is even bigger than my own macro! I should really get some practice in at home with my macro lens like you're doing. xd That would be the SMART thing to do, haha.

Haha, tbh the only reason I'm practising at home is because it's too cold to go outside >.< It should go back to the single digit negatives soon (C) and once it does I'll be trying some outdoor photography, too! But yeah, home practise is probably good, I bet I look hilarious trying to find the right position to get the slightest amount of focus out of that lens xd :

The best of photographers look the goofiest when taking their shots. rofl The best angles are often the ones that take the oddest positions to reach. Sadly though, sometimes due to being in public some shots I envision just aren't in the cards for me. crying Specifically because of the strange positions needed or the spot I'd need to shoot from being unfeasible. Like, usually can't start taking photos in the middle of the road, for example. Just plain unsafe.

It's so true! It's a great exercise in caring less about what people think of you, taking photos lol.

Well, I've got my camera out, time to play around with the macro lens! Let's see how this goes hehe.

It looks rad! My DSLR is a Canon too, the EOS Rebel SL1, though my vintage instant one is a classic Polaroid. Specifically the OneStep Land Camera! I love both dearly. whee

Oh the Rebel is beautiful! I've wanted one for ages~ When I get a digital camera it's probably what I'll choose.

And holy crow, I've wanted a Polaroid OneStep since I was a kid! I actually 3D modelled one and made it into a Sims 4 item just the other day!

Oh dang, I hope you're able to find a model of Rebel that you especially like! biggrin

I wish I had a vibrating eyes emoji to express how awesome seeing a functional OneStep for The Sims 4 is!! I'm downloading it right now to install in my game. whee

Yay I hope you like it! I like to put one on my Sim's desk as a decoration and keep one in their inventory to use hehe. I need to upload v1.1 to TSR soon; it's just an updated inventory image, as right now it's the build/buy image and it looks funny in your Sims' inventory. I'll probably do that this weekend. But yeah, it's totally functional in this version! Just a weird picture.

And on the subject of macro photography, I updated my first post with a few things I learned today while playing around with my macro lens. I've almost filled up my roll of film, which means I'll be developing it soon! We actually have a photo developing shop in town still, which is pretty rad, but eventually I want to go full-on dark room 4laugh
