Quote: Dormine was a wealthy wizard sort that did some wild s**t. Her hubster died or something, and maybe in that excursion, her daughter Savia got messed up as well. Maybe she picked a fight with a hag or some powerful being - she was kinda the sort to not be easily intimidated, as she was powerful in her own right. But was overly prideful and that often got her into trouble.
So, this being eviscerated her husband and cursed her daughter with some wasting disease that had no known cure, but as a smart person whose forte was bending the will of the natural world, she was able to find a treatment for it, but it was a bit difficult to create the mixture as it contained many rare ingredients. Though, most of these came from living creatures - ones that were difficult to come by. Likewise, Savia would need transplants, so she also needed parts from something compatible with her.
Thus, Calico was created - a chimeric abomination of all the bits and pieces Dormine needed to create her daughter’s treatment. As organs and other limited resources were harvested, Dormine utilized advanced regeneration magics on Calico's body to rapidly regrow parts of her for later use. These practices were unpleasant, despite their usefulness.
From the beginning, Calico was told that Savia was a goddess that required pieces of her as tribute and that she existed to protect and serve her. This was so Calico would be less inclined to rebel or become hostile, if this was instilled in her from a young age. It was assumed she would be volatile, given the many beasts she was made of.
Calico was never allowed to see Savia, but was told of her. She was described as a child, akin to a princess from the picture books Calico had seen. Calico grew to resent books like that; she didn’t look like the dashing heroes and beautiful damsels in the stories, but rather more the monsters that were slaine and reviled. Though in truth, Savia was older than Calico and had not been a child for some time.
hhh the overall concept for Calico was like, an extreme version of a "savior sibling"
my main theme for her from the start was rooted in bodily autonomy so BG3 got me thinking about her again cause I thought she'd fit in with its themes p well
I still need to figure out what sorta deal she made with Raphyboy. Maybe something related to her freedom? Or revenge? idk

So homegirl spent p much all her life in isolated luxury, but also like, being vivisected and s**t. She was told she existed to protect/be of use to Savia and this was her greatest calling. She was told people in the outside world were bad and made Savia sick, and that they would hurt her too.
As a teen, she got out and accidentally frightened some people, who then attacked. This was her only direct experience with the outside world.
So how would she interact with others and see the world, now that she is outta there? She was immediately sent to Avernus tho and experienced Some Horrors. Maybe she was informed that she was being sent away as a final sacrifice for Savia?
But ya know, Avernus sucks a** and after being there for a bit she was like "yo wait a minute I never agreed to any of this s**t??"
Maybe she is resentful and is in the beginning stages of unpacking the trauma of having like, no agency or autonomy growing up. Being used and harmed for a "greater good." This maybe causes her to appear selfish as a means to preserve this newfound autonomy. Why should she give any more of herself after so much had been taken for so long?
Why does she lie so much? What about?
Most of her lies would maybe be about her past and experiences. Her life was weird and not very relatable, so her lies are often made maybe as a means of trying to get people to like her, or maybe there's just not a whole lot to tell and she lacks a lot of fundamental experiences, so she feels the need to make something up.
She would embellish a lot too because she grew up reading almost exclusively fantastical tales, which are often exaggerated themselves. Maybe that's just how stories are supposed to be told?

“It was for a good purpose,” she would tell herself. Far too often were monsters created to cull the weak, to darken doorways - to make the world a worse place, but not her creation. Ignoring all the ethical issues that would arise in the creation of such a beast, she wasn’t like all those mad wizards before her forging monsters to do their bidding. Not at all!
At the age of eight, Dormine’s daughter Savia was cursed with a wasting sickness that left her entirely bedridden. With no known cure, Dormine used every resource at her disposal to save her, but to little avail. Mentally and physically, the young girl withered - the only person in the entire world Dormine had left.
Sensing her desperation, Dormine was approached by the devil Raphael, who offered her a deal: Savia’s recovery in exchange for Dormine’s soul. Stubborn and distrustful, Dormine refused the cambion’s bargain, asserting that she could find her own way, without his faustian interference.
Certain aspects of Savia’s condition responded to known remedies, but any improvement was small and short term. A portion of the ingredients could be grown and harvested from her gardens, but the others came from living creatures, and dangerous ones at that. Those particular ingredients were difficult to come by. If only she could just grow and harvest those as well.
… but maybe she could.
Dormine wasn’t above the more profane forms of magic, especially if it was for a good cause. She would cultivate yet another garden—one of flesh, blood, and bone. Anything her daughter would need, it would provide.
An amalgamation of various beasts, along with a piece of Savia herself for compatibility, a monstrosity was born. Scaled, horned, and patched with fur, Dormine knew it could never be known to the outside world.
For the following years, Dormine kept her creation hidden away in an isolated wing of her estate, tended to by a trusted few and a construct built to keep it company. Growing somewhat of a fondness for it, she named it Calico.
Despite what all she was made of, Dormine found Calico to be sweet and even-tempered, maybe stubborn at worst. Calico wanted for nothing and was given whatever material possessions she asked for, namely in the form of storybooks, clothes, and toys when she was young. Her primary source of companionship came from a construct given the name Atticus. However, her apparent life of isolated luxury was interrupted when it came time to harvest. All her life, Calico was told that she was created for one single purpose: to save Savia. This was the highest and most noble of callings, she was told, and that any of the pain and discomfort she faced was for a greater good.
Pain and discomfort was an understatement.
Any and all that was required for Savia was taken—extracted from Calico’s body and rapidly regrown again with powerful regenerative magic. The process and recovery period never got any easier, but it was for a good cause, right? It was why she was created in the first place. It just simply was.
The remainder of Calico’s life contained within the Furneaux Estate was largely repetitious, with a small rebellious streak and series of escapes in her teens that changed the way she looked at the world. Until then, she had strongly identified with the damsels from her story books—some of which were locked in towers or castles much like herself, awaiting the rescue of a dashing knight. They were always loved, cherished, and so beautiful—that must have meant she was too. That’s what she wanted to be.
The first people she encountered were terrified of her. It was nothing like the stories Atticus read to her at night-–nothing like the pictures in her books. They came at her screaming, others running away. Dormine had warned her the world was full of people that would hurt her, but she never truly believed it until that day. “The world is wicked,” she would say, “just look what it did to Savia.”
After about 20 years of treatments, Savia’s health went into a steady decline. The treatments made less and less of a difference as her body continued to waste away. Nothing helped, nothing stuck, and Dormine became desperate again. Calico suffered during this time as well, with harvesting becoming more frequent and invasive.
That was, until Raphael appeared to Dormine again. He could make everything right–he could bring Savia back, just like that, but he needed something in exchange. Knowing better than to make a deal with him herself, Dormine enlisted Calico to do so instead, goading her into one final "sacrifice" to save her daughter.
Blood, flesh, bone, and now soul, all for her.

■ Created by a renowned and powerful wizard named Dormine Furneaux, Calico was designed to function as an alchemical resource for her sick daughter's treatment. She was contained and taken care of in a tower on the family's estate where she was known to only a select few. Calico's creation was born of controversial magic and Dormine did not want word to get out what she had created in her desperation. Despite her captivity, Calico was well taken care of and wanted for nothing. Though, she was fueled with curiosity and wonder of the outside world by the fantastical, albeit fictional stories she consumed.
■ Calico often comes across as bubbly, adventurous, and prone to flights of fancy. Though, due to her upbringing, she is very naive and knows little of the world and how it really works. Still working through her personal traumas, she may come across as self-serving.
■ Her captivity would come to an end, however - at least, outside of the Hells. As the treatments made for Dormine's daughter became less effective, the devil Raphael came to her as he had years ago, again promising to cure her, for a price, of course.
