The idea:
To enable everyone with a tape player to post their work in the guild and get feedback on their progress.
The specifics:
You would submit a solo or ensemble piece, and put the amount of time you've been working on it, the type of recording equipment(to explain the bad quality of the recording), as well as the type of feedback you want. Ex. Positive only, Negative only, PM me comments, Don't care... whatever. Then people would comment upon your piece. I would try to get a hold of TarienQuest to ask permission to purchase another forum for this use.
The practicalities:
The site www.putfile.com, which I was recently sent to in order to hear something of my friend's, gave me the means to accomplish my idea, I thought. But it does not hold large files. I'll have to look into it more, because I think it might be able to take the kind of uploads that we would be using it for. However, any help that is offered would be greatly appreciated.
Getting recordings in the first place might also prove difficult for some. Those who have microphones should be fine, and those who have Polderbits or a similar technology that allows you to record tapes and CDs onto your computer should be able to participate as well. (I personally have the latter, which I love.) At any rate, those who do not have either of these might be unable to participate. So, unless there is a large number of people who are interested/willing/able to participate, it would be pointless.
So let me know.
Future hopes, way off somewhere:
Perhaps, if this works out, then we could hold competitions, etc. Very far into the speculative future.

Great idea biggrin but I only have a really cheap microphone on my computer so I won't be able to participate sad . However, I would like to comment !

wow, I like the idea! I too have a cheapo microphone, but I'll still comment, and I'll see what I can create anyways. I already make recordings, but they are strictly for practice purposes (hearing oneself is useful--often you're your own harshest critic), but I'll see what I can do. Sounds like fun!

y'know, I got to thinking, it would be kinda hard to judge the difficulty of a piece just by hearing it, if you had a contest. Things like position changes can radically make a piece more difficult, but when truly done right are almost undetectable by hearing alone.
But then I was thinking that it would be a useful tool for getting active members of the guild. If you had like a rating system, then there would be competition for the highest title, and that might get you some more traffic, more active members. Even the competition idea would accomplish this in part.
But of course it's not always a good idea to compare violinists with one another. Encouraging to some, discouraging to others. Or you could do a tournament type thing. Of those who participate, they all square off (by two's), then the winners of that round square off, etc., until you get down to two and then the final match. That would be awesome. whee
