Name: Yasen (ash tree, clear/serene) Sex: Male Hair color: Ash Brown Eye color: Hazel Skin tone: Tan Affinity: Science
Personality: A chill, inquisitive, sleepy boy who is figuring out how the world works and finding his place in it.
Chill: self-contained, hard to startle; regardless of what’s going on, he tends to roll with it; helps when asked. Temper has a slow fuse. Cranky/mono-syllabic in the morning.
Focused: goal-oriented and able to stay on task for hours at a time, has a tendency to hyper fixate and completely lose track of time. Forgets to eat semi-regularly.
Physical: enjoys physical tasks, extremely tactile, no personal bubble, physically demonstrative with people he likes (degrees of affection: pat on the arm > hair ruffle > body drap > personal pillow, etc).
Strengths: analytical, patient, quick reflexes
Weaknesses: fixates, internalizes until he explodes, lazy/unmotivated when he’s not interested in something, being dirty (it’s fine while he’s focused on something else, but the minute he notices his skin starts crawling), lowkey pessimist
Likes: analysis, organization/lists, water, sunbeams, long range rifles, naps
Goals: to nap a lot, in between wandering around the wilderness to find resources and restock the pantry; especially interested in the composition of materials and how they can best be processed/used.
Quirks: x • When he's lost in thought, his face settles into a resting-b***h-face that is quite intimidating x • He can fall asleep anywhere

Solo: On Waking
The first few days after waking were...strange. Where there had only been the warm, comforting hum of Mother and the stillness of the maturation tank, now there was an acute awareness of self: the pull of gravity against his limbs, the texture of the suit against his skin, hungry gnawing at his belly, the cold that seeped into his bones.
He slept a lot, those first few days, in between testing the limits of his body and making sense of everything. He knew the words for many of the things he saw and experienced, but he quickly realized he didn’t really understand it. There was a wealth of information he lacked that was part of a larger context: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch; he was inundated with stimuli, all of it new, all of it demanding attention, and slowly painting a deeper, nuanced understanding of his surroundings that went beyond a simple word. A tree was not just a tree--it was dappled light, the sound of the wind rustling the leaves, the rough texture of the bark, the sting of a splinter, the smell and taste of something inexplicably green on his tongue, the must of the mulch, and the creatures that called it home. All of it could be described separately, but the sum was greater than its parts, and it wasn’t until he experienced it for himself that it seemed to slot neatly into place, broadening his contextual understanding.
It was fascinating. And perhaps that’s what sparked his interest--with the words, yes, and the discovery of poetry in the library allowed such a fun way to discover more and to puzzle out their hidden meanings, but in particular he found himself enamored with what things were made up of. The very base components of things, interacting with others to create a larger whole, and not only that, but the fact that those parts could be changed under the right circumstances, becoming malleable, changing shape, and coming together into something new.
Contemplating the fabric of reality and exploring the confines of his physical body was exhausting work though, and he quickly discovered another favorable activity: naps. The sweet embrace of oblivion was a welcome respite when he was feeling overwrought, which seemed often those first few days.
He wasn’t feeling tired at the moment, though, he was feeling restless. He had been left largely on his own since leaving the maturation tank, which had suited him fine up till now, as enthralled with examining his own edges as he’d been, but he now found himself wondering about his fellow residents. There were other children, he knew, and he was interested in how they would interact as part of a larger whole.
There was only one thing to be done about it. He would have to socialize.

Solo: Moving Meditation
As was often the case in browsing the library without much direction, Yasen found something unexpected (which was, after all, the entire point) and settled into a chair to pursue his newest discovery. It was an instruction manual for a type of moving meditation, meant to strengthen mind, body and spirit, and while there was a brief introduction to the philosophy behind it, most of the book was a series of illustrations for poses of increasing difficulty, meant to flow together in sequence.
He flipped through the book and considered. It wasn’t directly applicable to combat, something he felt like he should focus on considering their circumstances, but it would increase flexibility, awareness, and core strength and purported to be an excellent grounding technique. It seemed like it might be a good way to start or end a day, if he could figure out the flow based on the illustrations alone. It was worth trying anyway.
He unfolded himself from the chair, stretching absently, and headed for his room. It wasn’t worth trying to snag space in one of the training rooms when he was still trying to translate two-dimensional instructions into three-dimensional movement, and meditation was supposed to be quiet besides. He didn’t want to deal with interruptions.
Safely ensconced in his room, he grabbed a towel to use as a mat, and began his experiment.
The first few poses were easy enough. Focusing inward, getting in touch with how his body was feeling, focusing on his breathing, gently loosening muscles and priming them for movement, but it quickly became apparent that the increasing difficulty of the poses would take time, both to figure out the correct transitions and to build up the strength (and flexibility) to accomplish. He felt very unwieldy by the end, limbs uncooperative and in the way.
Still, he liked how it made him feel, all loose-limbed and accomplished, and he could see it being very calming and meditative when he didn’t have to obsessively think about what he was doing. It was, he decided, worth pursuing further.
He folded the towel and set it aside for later, yawning. Now that he was done for the day, he should return the book to the library, but perhaps a nap first? He wasn't tired, per se--he actually felt rather invigorated after his practice--but he liked naps, and it seemed like a good reward for his efforts.
Yasen flopped on the bed and sighed, content. Oh yes, correct decision; the book could definitely wait. He was out between one breath and the next.
