Desperate for a mage child, the couple began to look into a shadier means of procuring one for their family. Not only would they need a mage, but one that bore somewhat of a resemblance to either of them, if they were to pass it off as their own.
The Merendis', as a generally wealthy family, was no stranger to owning slaves, both human and elven. Among these slaves was an elven woman named Mihra, who served as a housekeeper to Helvetia's parents. A known mage, it was likely the child she had recently given birth to was as well, especially considering most of the other male elven servants had magical abilities as well. With dark eyes and strawberry blonde hair, she bore a small enough resemblance to Helvetia—a resemblance that her son too shared with her. The only trouble was those ears.
Seizing this horrible opportunity, Helvetia and Caius took the child from her, soon claiming him as their own, but in order to hide his more prominent elven features, they cut and rounded off the tips of his ears, giving him a more human appearance.
Having been too young to remember the traumatic ordeal, Valerius grew up relatively happy and in the lap of luxury. Having shown an aptitude for magic, Valerius had been a part of the Circle of Magi from the moment his powers manifested during his childhood. There, at the Circle in Carastes, Valerius flourished, becoming the golden child of the Merendis family, while his older brother Lars lived in his shadow. Though their relationship had once been healthy, this constant praise and attention directed at Valerius began to breed resentment in Lars as he went unnoticed and neglected. it didn't help that Valerius wasn't the most humble of people, and wasn't shy of rubbing his accomplishments in his brother's nonmagical face.
By the time Valerius had become First Enchanter within Carastes Circle of Magi, Lars had discovered the secret of his brother's origin. He wasn't really his brother, or even human for that matter. At this point, Lars had cut contact with most of his own family and cared little for their reputation and fortune, if this scandalous truth were to make a scratch on it. And that it did.
Though there were elven members among the Circle, Valerius being an elf "masquerading" as a human in Tevinter—and one born from an elven slave, became an instant scandal. Despite this rumor spreading throughout their social spaces, Valerius was not necessarily kicked out or demoted in rank, but his own reputation greatly plummeted as outrage sparked.
Angry, confused, and hurt, Valerius fled Tevinter. After losing nearly everything that he had, including his sense of identity, the next few years of Valerius' life were filled with reckless decisions and poor coping mechanisms. Now the poster child for lost and burnt out prodigies, he spent most of his time in a stupor, doing all the reckless, stupid things that would have been an embarrassment to his family. It's not like he had one of those anymore, anyway. Maybe he never really did.
