Sailor Moon Event:
Angry Kitten Prompt
You find yourself traveling close to the border of the swamps, exploring and playing in the waters. Suddenly, you overhear the sound of young children screaming and laughing. Curious, you take a closer look only to realize a few younglings are picking on a defenseless creature just off the shore.
It appears to be a black Ha'oki kitten, a fearsome creature when full grown...but the kitten only looks pitiful and matted under the angry attention of the younglings.
You have a choice to make...do you step in? Ignore it? You better make a decision soon, because it seems like the poor kitten doesn't have too much energy left to fight back.
[ For this prompt, you should react to the situation accordingly. If you decide to help the kitten, what happens? Do you save it, and if so what do you do with it? If you decide not to help the kitten, reflect on the situation and how it made you feel. ]
There were things Marama should be doing, but the sun was warm and the water was cool, and there was no way she could resist such a lovely day. She’d snuck out with the tiniest bit of guilt for shirking her responsibilities, but it was soon forgotten under the excitement of escape and potential adventure.
She picked a direction without much thought, weaving in and out of the water as she explored both streambed and bank for shiny rocks, interesting flowers, and anything else that caught her eye, and wandered much farther than she meant to or even realized until she heard the shrill screaming laughter of small children, startled into actually looking up rather than down in her hunt for interesting bits and bobs. The waterway was unfamiliar, the landscape morphing into the grasslands that surround the swamp, and it sent a chill down her spine to realize she’d wandered so far without even noticing. Where was she? Could she find her way back home from here?
Marama felt tears p***k at her eyes, and stubbornly rubbed at them as she tried to cheer herself up: “It’s no big deal. Just ask for directions!” She nodded to herself, and headed around the bend towards where she heard the commotion.
A commotion that, apparently, involved cruelly harassing a small, defenseless, mewling and hissing Ha’oki kitten. Given time to think about it, she might have thought twice about getting involved in a situation where an angry mother cat might burst into at any moment--where was it’s mother?--but Marama had never liked bullies and all she saw was a defenseless baby animal on its last legs.
“Hey!” she cried before she thought better of it, “leave it alone!”
“Who are you?” the biggest child scowled, obviously the ringleader by the way the other children fell in line behind them as they turned to face her, momentarily forgetting their victim.
“W-who am I?” she stuttered for a moment, brain finally catching up with the situation and frantically thinking of a way out. They might be smaller than she was, but there were more of them and their expressions were awful and they’d just been poking a baby animal to death, who did that, they could be demons for all she knew. She shivered and considered frantically: what was she most afraid of when she was doing something she shouldn’t? Oh. Please, please let it work:
“Who am I? Who are you!? What are your names? Just wait until I tell your parents what you’ve been up to!” She planted her hands on her hips and did everything she could to channel her mother.
The biggest child looked like he might be willing to challenge her, and Marama’s heart stuttered painfully, but his cohorts were not nearly so sure of themselves.
“I can’t get grounded again!” one of them whined and started to back away, swiftly followed by the other. The leader’s scowl deepened, yelling that they were cowards, but after a hateful glance and one last swipe at the kitten, he reluctantly followed them.
“That was so scary!” Marama wailed when they were finally out of sight, sinking into a squat, head in hands, as she tried to get her heart rate under control and stop crying. She’d thought for sure it wouldn’t work!
She was brought out of her spiraling thoughts some intermediate time later by a raspy tongue licking her knee, and only just managed to keep from flailing in shock, raising her head to look at the kitten. She was amazed it would come near her after what those horrible kids had been doing. It looked nervous, but hopeful, and Marama’s heart melted.
“Oh, you poor thing.” The kitten’s fur was completely matted, and one of its eyes looked swollen. What horrible children. She had half a mind to go find their parents anyway, names or not. The kitten also looked rather skinny, she noticed on closer inspection. Had something happened to the mother, and that’s why the kitten was all on its own? Tears welled up again.
“Are you all alone?” Her parents very well might kill her if she brought it home, but she didn’t have the heart to leave a defenseless baby animal on its own, regardless of what fearsome creature it would grow up to be. She’d just have to risk it!
She offered a hand for inspection, smiling brightly when the kitten finally sniffed her fingers and butted up against her with its head, weakly purring.
“Are you hungry? I’m no good at hunting birds...how do you feel about some fish?” She wasn’t very good at catching fish either, but she’d do her best! And then she’d follow the waterway back the way she came, and hope for the best.

🌒 Solo: Angry Kitten, cont.
→ youngling, 472 words
It was well after dark by the time Marama made it back home, shaking from the cold and near tears. She’d been alright in the beginning, riding on the wave of her success, but what seemed a great adventure swiftly turned into an tumultuous slog through unfamiliar territory that became more sinister the farther the sun sunk down below the horizon.
The kitten didn’t like getting wet--she had a million tiny, stinging scratches to prove it--so she’d been forced to stick to the bank for the most part. Being out of the water so long, even having stopped twice to wet her gills, left her feeling like what she imagined a desert was like: absolutely parched.
She had spent what felt like an eternity stumbling along in the growing darkness cold and hurting and dried out and jumping at shadows, wanting nothing more than to curl up into a miserable ball and cry, but the kitten needed help and her parents probably thought she was dead, washed up on some distant shore. She had to get home, so she kept moving, one shaky step after another, until the landscape started to look familiar again and a final burst of speed brought her home.
Marama hiccuped, adjusting her mewling bundle, and stumbled through the entryway to home.
“Marama!” “Oh, baby, where have you been?”
She was immediately scooped up into a hug by two frantic parents.
“I’m s-sorry,” she wailed, breaking down in great hiccuping sobs as the story slowly spilled out of her. Eventually, when her tears started to calm, the kitten made a noise of protest where it was squished between them and they reluctantly withdrew, staring down at her tiny charge.
“It’s a wild animal, Marama--” her mom finally said, beginning to frown in a way that never boded well for Marama.
“I couldn’t leave it!” she insisted, “it’s just a baby! It was all alone and hurt!”
Her dad huffed a soft laugh, and patted her on the head. Marama perked up hopefully; of the two, her father was more likely to be sympathetic. “Let’s get you cleaned up, your mother will settle the kitten for the night. Tomorrow we’ll find someone who knows what to do with it.”
“And discuss your grounding,” her mom added ominously.
“Moooommm~” Marama wailed. She was sure they’d forget about her sneaking off in light of everything else; it was so unfair!
“Best not argue with your mother,” her father said good naturedly, “come on now.”
Marama handed over the kitten reluctantly, petting it’s matted fur and promising to see it soon. It would be nice to get cleaned up. And maybe by morning her mom will have been worn down by soulful kitten eyes and could be convinced to be reasonable! She scampered after her dad.
