Gang activity wasn't uncommon where Kohaku grew up, though it took a bit of searching and word of mouth before he was able to join one as a means of protection. He figured, if he had some form of community, especially an intimidating one, others would be less inclined to mess with him, fearing violent backlash from either him or fellow gang members. Over time, Kohaku found he and his mother were left alone, though gang life wasn't exactly glamorous. His gang, the Red Reapers, was run by a woman named Akane, who Kohaku came to both fear and respect. The Reapers ran a tight ship, but seldom partook in "unnecessary" crime. Most excursions were between those who made dealings with them and neglected to keep their end of the bargain, or fights between rival gangs. There was a strict code of conduct Akane stressed for each member to follow, with one of those tenets being to keep their jobs only as dirty as the instructions dictated; the Reapers were only focused on the task at hand and didn't need extra bodies piling up. They were to only resort to lethal force if absolutely necessary.
Utilizing Kohaku's ability to sense bioelectric fields, one of his specialties became scoping out locations, whether that be for targets, bystanders, or spies. Alongside this, Kohaku had grown into a tall, imposing figure as he aged, and quite the successful intimidater. However, much of the gang's code of conduct would change upon Akane's death. In her place, a young man by the name of Kuro took over after having served as her right hand man for years. Kohaku never cared much for the man—he always seemed a little too eager to bark orders at everyone and now that he was in charge, Kohaku couldn't help but become a little apprehensive. Slowly but surely, Kuro began to change the ways in which the Red Reapers conducted their business. He pushed a more brute force, "by any means necessary" policy, which usually meant more violence and sloppier delivery. This soon devolved into the Reapers becoming little more than Kuro's personal thugs who carried out his dirty deeds. With no prior identifier or uniform, Kuro demanded each member get a small tattoo of a red skull and crossbones somewhere on their bodies to signify their membership. Kohaku protested, but eventually relented, getting one on his hip where it would seldom show.
In the end, it took a little more than matching tattoos for Kohaku to distance himself from Kuro's Red Reapers. There was one man in particular that Kuro had it out for—what beef he had with him was beyond Kohaku, but he never felt it was really any of his business. Until, it was. Kohaku and a few others were dispatched to pay this man a visit; this man was allegedly a threat to the Red Reapers. The details were few, but from what Kohaku could gather before and after the hit, it seemed to him that Kuro owed a debt of some sort that he refused to pay—and what better way to take care of that then to send your personal goons to "talk him out of it." The man seemed taken aback by the invasive action, but remained firm. Kuro had mentioned two children of his that could be used for leverage, if needed. Likely in hiding by this point, Kohaku was told to search the house for them while the man seemed to be in a state of fear and bewilderment.

Kohaku turned back from the closet they were huddled in, claiming they must have run off to play somewhere. Kuro seemed pleased with the outcome and Kohaku quit shortly after, but his leader would not graciously accept his departure and made threats to his mother should he "turn his back" on the Reapers. The two exchanged some colorful words, ending with Kohaku leaving for good. That night, Kimi and Kohaku fled town, pulling the money both of them saved up to find a new place, far from Kuro and his Reapers.
Despite the fear both of them lived in for a while, the two settled into a much nicer home, where Kimi would go on to open her own bakery. Quickly becoming the town mom, Kimi's reputation greatly contrasted with her son's, who initially came off as overprotective and brash. Going from living each day in survival mode to selling pies in a nice neighborhood took some getting used to before he began to mellow out.
Given his ability to efficiently detect others, Kohaku was tasked with locating people who may be missing, trapped, or hiding within a particular area. Despite having no formal training prior to living in Konoha, he received some from the academy to better his abilities, eventually bringing him to the rank of a tokubetsu jonin with a specialization in search and rescue. With there being periods of inactivity in his line of work, Kohaku helps out with his mother's bakery in the meantime.

So, Kohaku gets down on himself sometimes. What he did as a means of survival in his earlier years haunts him to a degree, even though it really wasn't that bad. He still feels guilt over it, feeling that it was a show of what kind of person he really was.
What determines a good person? Is that up to someone to decide for themself?
To him, his mother Kimi has always been an example of a genuinely good person, and someone he aspires to be more like. She never seemed to choose violence first, even back when he was growing up. She made friends and alliances by being kind to everyone, while the first thing Kohaku could think of to keep each other safe was through fear and intimidation. This dynamic continued later in life, even after the worst was behind them.
From growing up in that sort of environment, it permanently effected Kohaku. He tried to be more soft and kind, and though he had mellowed out over the years, he still isn't really that kind of person. He's brash and has an air of intimidation about him, from his speech to the way he carries himself.
Are all people good, deep down, despite the things they do? Or is everyone just what they do? If you do bad things, then you are a bad person, not some poor, misunderstood woobie.
Though, Kimi seemed to believe the former. All people were good, deep down, and she always tried to find it. Even though this seemed like a kind sentiment, it often got her mixed up with harmful people. She thought she could bring out the best in others, leading her to be manipulated and abused by those she tried to help. Too non-confrontational to break it off, Kohaku often came to her defense, running off those they both had enough of. This further lead him to believe himself to be a violence prone person.
Kimi never had any doubts that Kohaku was a good person, and though it felt good hearing that from her, he knows how she is, and her words have lost meaning to him in that regard.

These receptors are sensitive to fields of electricity, both bioelectrical and not. Given these adaptation are most commonly found in water-dwelling animals, Kohaku's electrolocation is much sharper and faster in water, while on land, detection is slower and duller in comparison. As a drawback, Kohaku can become overwhelmed by vast amount of electricity being hurled at him, or even have his ability to detect become muddled from the excessive feedback.

Kohaku can often come off as brash and intimating, even when he doesn't really mean to. Having a rough upbringing, he inadvertently carries himself as someone that shouldn't be messed with, though his cool temperament betrays his hardened appearance. Kohaku is an easygoing person by default, though to say that he is soft or quiet couldn't be further from the truth. A high-energy person, Kohaku loves to be around people and have a good time. Despite his usual laid-back attitude, he has carried a lot of anger over the years and can become over-protective of others, in turn becoming quick to provoke if he thinks someone is a threat to them.

Kohaku didn't have the most comfortable of upbringings. Born to a down on her luck teenage mother, Kohaku's earliest memories consisted of hopping from town-to-town as his mother worked various kitchen jobs to keep them afloat. His mother Hikari had ambitions of becoming a baker and owning her own shop one day, but in the earlier years, it seemed to be a distant dream, one that she tirelessly tried to balance with giving her son all that she could with what little they had.
Kohaku and his mother had always been close, being the only family each other really had. Because of this, Kohaku became a little too guarded and overprotective of himself and his mother. Unfortunately, as a young child, there was little he could do to protect himself or anyone else from the dangers of every day, and that helplessness festered, until he was just old enough to begin standing up for himself. Small and spindly as a child, he went through an alarming growth-spurt as a teen, eventually towering over most of his peers. He had found that intimidation was at times enough to keep others at bay, and he became quite good at shaping himself up into an imposing presence. At about the age of 14, he joined a small street punk gang that was a nuisance to the community at most, but also provided a sense of family outside of his mother. Despite being one of the more laid back members of the gang, his appearance was enough to reserve him a special place among their ranks. He was tall, sharp-toothed, and generally off-putting in appearance - and though he used that to his advantage, it felt more like a role he was forced into. It was like he was never allowed to be a soft or gentle person because he didn't look the part of one. His reputation as something to be feared was only exacerbated when his mother let slip the identity of his father, a man she had met years ago before the rise of his infamy, and nearly forgot. The resemblance was clear, and the rumor spread throughout the town. While Hikari's reputation took somewhat of a dive, Kohaku's friends thought it was something they could use to their advantage. Their measly gang had the son of the infamous "Demon of the Mist," and who knows what connections they had with someone like that on their side. They had none, actually, but nobody had to know that!
After the war, Hikari had managed to purchase a small shop in another town over, beginning what she had dreamed of doing since she was young. Kohaku helped out in any way that he could, often covering the retail end so his mother could focus on baking. Though, the reputation he had procured gradually bled into their new home, causing some customers to become afraid of interacting with them. This only grew worse when mentions of beast-like people suddenly became the topic of the next new threat. Kohaku, by all definitions, fit this description, and it caused his mother's shop to nearly close down due to a steady lack of business. Not wanting to further destroy his mother's dream, he left town, hoping it would make her life a little easier.
Now out on his own, he ended up bonding with a group of outcast beastfolk much like himself. Their shared anger boiled and built as the situation worsened. They became targets, accused of being dangerous whether they had a history of such of not. In their indignation, they formed what would soon become the Beastkin Vigilantes. Angered by their mistreatment, they collectively began to lash out and fight against those sent to subdue them. At the peak of their rage, a splinter group Kohaku was a part of targeted a small town in ___; the very same one his mother set up shop in in. Immediately returning to warn her, Hikari's shop was soon destroyed in the ensuing chaos.
It gutted him to seeing his mother break down and sob over the dream she had worked towards her entire life, now laid waste in rubble. He would never forget the way she looked at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and fear. He felt responsible for this, and it could have had a much, much worse outcome had he not warned her in advance.
He was done. Done with a life of violence and done giving the people who feared him more of a reason to, but he knew it would be easier said than done. Without a word to the Vigilantes, he left town with his mother.
It took some time before Hikari was able to begin again, this time purchasing another small shop in a town much further away. Maybe here, Kohaku could start over again. Though he was now free of his own personal reputation, he wasn't able to fully escape the fear and distrust due to his bestial appearance. Despite his separation from the Beastkin Vigilantes, he still felt their anger and didn't necessarily think they were wrong in their actions and what they sought out to do, but he felt a higher duty to his mother, the one person who had always been there for him.
