Dusk was only barely settling over the city as Calaverite strolled down the sidewalk of one of the larger outlet malls in the area. Dimming pink light from the sun cast long shadows across the ground, but even so, the warm spring evening enticed many into staying out later than they had during the colder winter months. Couples enjoying cute boutiques and clusters of high schoolers leaving the nearby movie theater ambled around outside the shops, chattering and laughing.
Cala had never had such experiences. He watched them through curious eyes, as if the whole affair was foreign to him. When one group left his line of vision, another took its place. He hadn't gone to high school to make friends like that. He'd never had a girlfriend. No one he'd even seen outside of TV shows had had relationships like that.
He wondered briefly how it happened, how it worked. Everyone seemed to get along without issue somehow. Calaverite's brow knit. He cocked his head. He didn't think he got along like that with anyone, and he couldn't remember a time when so many had such an easy happiness around each other. But then, these people were walking out of a cute parlor shop, carrying cute frozen treats. They should be happy.
Ooooooh!
Maybe he could be happy with something like that too. It was upon seeing a cone adorned with a cute, squishy, green marshmallow bird that Calaverite decided, yes, he wanted.
He waited in the short line at the shop (he could be patient if he had to be), and selected the most colorful toppings once it was his turn. There were sprinkles and nuts and little gummy o's. And the marshmallow he'd seen. This was a good treat. He accepted the cone as it was passed to him, beaming in delight. As it was handed off, the portly man behind the counter informed him, "That'll be $6.97."
Calaverite shot the man a skeptical look. He didn't carry money. He didn't have money to carry. So he ignored the comment, turned on his heel, and began to stride away.
It was a woman who snatched his arm, and Cala whipped to glare at her. "Excuse me! You can't leave without paying!" She snapped. Stereotypical 'Karen.' Tall, brown hair, dark sunglasses propped atop her head. Calaverite's expression slid into a scowl. Ivory was weak and thin. He could be yanked around by pretty much anyone who put their hands on him. Calaverite was not.
He wrenched away, snarling aggressively as he staggered backward to put space between him. The woman's expression faltered. "Nobody said you could touch me!" Cala spat. "I don't know you! You can't touch me!" He held his treat firmly in one hand (no one was going to take it from him), and the other drew down, encased in a swirl of dancing dark magic. "Call the Dead" he rumbled softly as the magic spilled from his fingers and slid across the floor, forming into two, mangled rats that gnashed their teeth at those nearest to them.
Squeals of terror erupted from the shop's patrons, and they scrambled away from Calaverite and his creatures. They were quite small, but the stink radiating off them was enough to make anyone vomit, and the sight of them was somehow worse: dark sockets for eyes, entrails seeping out of distended bellies, flesh cut off of tails to reveal bone. "Get them," Cala hissed softly, and at his command, the rats moved, charging their dilapidated bodies at those closest.
Cala stood near the door. No one dared run past him, but the civilians shrieked and darted toward the back of the shop, vaulting over the counter to use it as a barrier between them and him. But Cala didn't care about the others. He only cared about Karen.
He lunged, fingers clawing briefly at the fabric of her shirt before his hand sank into her chest. She screamed in horror, a sound that caught and strangled in her throat as he plucked her starseed free of its confines, and her body crumpled to the ground.
He'd only wanted the ice cream. It hadn't needed to be this way.
But Cala's creatures lasted only a handful of seconds, and no one tried to stop him this time as he shrugged and stepped lazily out of the store.
