Hybrids in Tendaji
Hybrids are becoming more and more commonplace in Tendaji and what was impossible just years ago is becoming closer to accepted now.
Genetics in Tendaji are a strange thing, and to make it easier we've created a list of how hybrid traits work. (This list applies to customs and breedings!)
|| Check out this thread for any hybrid combination that is unavailable at this time!

Tendaji Hybrids
General Tendaji Traits || Crystals and markings are not genetically the same. They cannot exist where they do not belong: xxxxx|| Markings cannot show up where markings do not exist on the race with markings. xxxxx|| Crystals cannot show up where crystals do not exist on the race with crystals. xxxxx(ex to the above: an Ice x Matori hybrid would only have crystals located where ice earthlings have crystals, not where Matori have markings and vice versa) || Colors cannot blend together to create a new color in most cases. This includes hair, crystals, and eyes. (any exceptions will be listed below in the specific race) || Hybrids with less than 1/4 of a race cannot have that race for their skin tone. The heritage is too diluted for something as covering as the skin (ex: if they are 1/8 ice, they would not have ice colored skin, it would be one of their other parent's races) || Crystal shape for hybrids of two crystal bearing races can come from either side or be mixed on the character. || Crystal placement can come from either side, or be a mix of both. || Crystal color comes from only one race || Marking style comes from only one race. || Hair color only comes from one race.
AISHAN HYBRIDS || Aishan hybrids have the option of having antennae. The chance of it diminishes greatly as the race becomes recessive. (1/2 aishan has 50% chance, 1/4 aishan has 15% chance, anything less than 1/4 cannot have antennae) || Aishan eyes are different genetically than earthlings. The hybrid will either have aishan style eyes, or earthling style eyes. || Aishan style eyes can take on an earthling's color (ex: silver bug eyes if they're a shifter hybrid) || Aishan hybrids can have dreads or regular hair (until a growth class is chosen). || Aishan hybrids can have a skin color base from either parent and a fade color from either parent (ex: aishan skin with earthling fade, earthling skin with aishan fade, earthling skin with earthling fade, aishan skin with aishan fade) || Aishan/water hybrids can only inherit colors from their parents specifically. So a hybrid cannot have water skin and a darker water fade. They can only inherit either the aishan fade color or the lighter underbelly color. || The above rules also applies to markings, they can either inherit the water parent’s marking color or the aishan parent’s marking color. (Same for aishan/geian) || Aishan hybrids that are less than 1/4 alk will not have full body markings (they can be scarce or have none at all). || Aishan hybrids can inherit the alkidike eyebrow shape.
Alkidike Hybrids || Alkidike skin fades from yellow to green at the tips. In hybrids this color can change depending on the other parent (ex: an ice hybrid can have ice skin with a darker blue fade). This is rare in hybrids, typically they'll have alk colored skin, or the earthling skin. || Alkidike have markings. The hybrid can have markings like their parent in the alk color, or it can be a color similar to the earthling skin (like a darker tan for wind hybrids for instance)
Elaria Hybrids || Antennae are all or nothing. Hybrids cannot have only some of the elaria antennae. || Elaria skin fades from gray to pink at the tips. In hybrids this color can change depending on the other parent (ex: an ice hybrid can have ice skin with a lighter blue fade). This is rare in hybrids, typically they'll have elaria colored skin, or the earthling skin. || Elaria have markings. The hybrid can have markings like their parent in the elaria color, or it can be a color similar to the earthling skin (like a light gray for shifter hybrids for instance)
Vandrea Hybrids || Vandrea skin fades from brown to black at the tips. In hybrids this color can change depending on the other parent (ex: an ice hybrid can have ice skin with a darker blue fade). This is rare in hybrids, typically they'll have vandrea colored skin, or the earthling skin. || Vandrea have markings. The hybrid can have markings like their parent in the vandrea color, or it can be a color similar to the earthling skin (like a light gray for shifter hybrids for instance)
Elidae Hybrids || Antennae are all or nothing. Hybrids cannot have only some of the elidae antennae. || Elidae skin fades from gray to pink at the tips. In hybrids this color can change depending on the other parent (ex: an ice hybrid can have ice skin with a darker blue fade). This is rare in hybrids, typically they'll have elaria colored skin, or the earthling skin. || Elidae have markings. The hybrid can have markings like their parent in the elidae color, or it can be a color similar to the earthling skin (like a light gray for shifter hybrids for instance)
EARTHLING HYBRIDS
Shifter Hybrids || Shifter hybrids allows for variety in crystal placement. || Shifter hybrids' ability to shift dramatically declines the less shifter there is in them (half shifters have only 1/4 chance of shifting anything). || Shifter hybrids can only shift their skin/eyes if they have the shifter colors! || This means that if the hybrid has non-shifter colored skin, they can only have the same color skin as their parent. || Shifter hybrids who have shifter colored skin and shifter colored eyes must have the light and dark combo, they cannot be both light or both dark.
Fire Hybrids || Fire earthlings are the only other race besides Alks that can have dreads. || Fire hybrids have the option of having dreads regardless of what hair color the baby receives (ex: shifter fire can have white dreads).
Water Hybrids || Water hybrids either have matori ears or they have their other parent's ears. They cannot be combined together to make a new shape. || Water markings must maintain the appearance that is specific to their race if they appear on the hybrid at all. || Water hybrids can have their other parent's skin, with the matori two tone. (ex: shifter/matori can have dark gray skin with a lighter gray underbelly, and even lighter gray spotting) || Water hybrids can have the other parent's skin color with water markings (without the two tone, and the markings can be water color, or a lighter version of the skin color). || Water hybrids that are less than 1/4 water will not have full body markings (they can be scarce or have none at all). || Water hybrids can have the water pupil regardless of what color eyes the hybrid ends up getting. || Water hybrids can inherit the water earthling eyebrows.
Yaeli Hybrids || Yaeli hybrids can have downturned ears even if the ear shape differs from yaeli. || Yaeli hybrids cannot inherit the yaeli glow. || Yaeli hybrids can inherit their black sclera.
Lightning Hybrids || Lightning Hybrids can have the lightning style pupil regardless of what color eyes the hybrid ends up getting.
Geian Hybrids || Geian hybrids markings do not grow. || Geians have markings. The hybrid can have markings like their parent in the geian color, or it can be a color similar to the other parent's skin (like a lighter orange for lightning hybrids for instance, or the alk marking color for alkidike hybrids)

Kahikinan Hybrids
General Kahikinan Traits || The individual colors of a race’s traits cannot mix! A hybrid cannot have a hair color that is a combination of two races, ie: a mixed bluish brown color for kaha’iko/menehune hybrid. The color has to come from one race or the other. (This is for all traits.) || Traits are very much “all-or-nothing”. A hybrid cannot have an altered or in-between shape (such as bumps instead of barbels). Either the trait is there in full, or it isn’t there are all. || Traits must match up to their “major” or “minor” category, ie: a kaha’iko/menehune hybrid can have menehune marking colors from the “major” color range, and kaha’iko marking color from their “minor” color range, but cannot have a menehune color from their “major” range and a kaha’iko color from their “major” range (etc). || The above also applies to hair, ie: a kaha’iko/hapuna hybrid can have “main” hair from the kaha’iko and “ombre” hair from the hapuna, but cannot have “ombre” hair from the kaha’iko and “ombre” hair from the hapuna (etc). || Marking patterns must be from one parent or the other, patterns cannot mix. || Marking location must be from one parent or the other, locations cannot mix. || Unique species traits are limited to one per character, ie: a character cannot have barbels and fins, they have to choose one or the other.
Kaha’iko Hybrids || Kaha’iko hybrids with menehune can have the hair color from the menehune or a kaha’iko color from the “main” color range. Menehune Hybrids || Menehune hybrids may have barbels that differ in numbers from their menehune parent. || Menehune hybrids with races of multi-colored hair can use the menehune color as a “main” color only, ie: hair cannot ombre to brown at the tips. Hapuna Hybrids || Hapuna hybrids with menehune can have the hair color from the menehune or a hapuna color from the “main” color range. || Hapuna/Moakai hybrids must have their hair match their markings (ex: orange and black hair ombre must have orange and black marking colors). Moakai Hybrids || Moakai hybrids may have a forehead lure in a different size than their moakai parent. || Moakai lures can glow regardless of skin color inherited. || Moakai hybrids with menehune can have the hair color from the menehune or a moakai color from the “main” color range. || Hapuna/Moakai hybrids must have their hair match their markings (ex: orange and black hair ombre must have orange and black marking colors). Kawena Hybrids || Kawena hybrids with menehune can have the hair color from the menehune or a kawena color from the “main” color range. || Kawena hybrids with races that have ombres can either have an ombre in their matching parent’s “ombre” color range, or highlights in the kawena parent’s “highlights” color range, ie: a kaha’iko/kawena hybrid cannot have highlights in a kaha’iko color or ombre in a kawena color (etc). || Kawena hybrids may have the eye color from their other parent while still having the eye style from the Kawena (no visible sclera and dark small pupil). || Kawena hybrids can have marking colors from their other parent’s “major” color range, but not their “minor” color range. || Kawena hybrids can have a glow only from the colors that are from the kawena, ie: kawena colored markings can glow, but kaha’iko colored markings cannot.
KAHIKINA/TENDAJI HYBRIDS || Kahikinan hybrids with non-marking races can either have kahikinan markings in full or not at all. They cannot mix markings with other races colors. (ex: they cannot have shifter colored kahikinan markings.) || Kahikinan hybrids with non-kahikinan races that already have markings can use either the kahikinan colored markings or the Tendaji marking color as the "major" color (ex: alkidike green markings in place of a moakai's main marking color with the black accent color). || Kahikinan hybrids can have hair color from either parent with or without the ombre/highlights of the kahikinan race. || Kahikinan/Aishan hybrids can inherit the kahikinan special trait OR the aishan antennae, not both (and they have to inherit one, they cannot have neither). || Kahikinan markings cannot be crystal colored and vice versa (as established in prior rules). || Kahikinan hybrids inherit the ability to choose their gender! If they are less than half kahikinan they lose this ability. (This also means that at less than half kahikinan they cannot breed with all genders naturally.)
