Name: Sestiva
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Craft: Healercraft
Rank: Candidate / Apprentice (herbalism)

Origin: Keroon.

Appearance:
Body - Sestiva's a little bit taller than average girls of her age range, with a stocky, solid build. She's got an upturned nose, a round face, and a dusting of freckles all over her tanned body. She's got a few scars on her hands and forearms from her life in the outdoors, and faint scars and small scabs on her forehead because she used to pop her zits. (That is a habit she has finally stopped doing, thank goodness)

Hair - Black, just past shoulder length....and chock full of split ends. Trimming has not tamed her hair's tendency to do this. Even worse, the merest hint of humidity Ses's entire head turns into fluffy, frizzy, poofy waves She tends to just wash and wear, with a rawhide tie to keeep it out of the way. You'll rarely see her without her father's old drover hat plunked on her head. It's a brownish, dusty and battered thing, but it's *hers*.
Mess with the hat, and she will throw hands.

Eyes - a dark hazel and slightly tilted, with long lashes. She honestly thinks it's the prettiest thing about herself.

Voice - Sestiva speaks with a strong Keroonian country drawl.

Clothes -She is never going to be seen in anything overly frilly or gaudy. A nice pair of trousers, well-woven cotton shirt, vest, and boots are her usual outfit. Of course anything she wears also has to have pockets.

Personality:

Practical - sometimes the tried and true works, and Sestiva will go down that route every time if she has the choice rather than hare off with an unknown plan

Honest : Hope you really want to hear if you look fat in that dress or not. Ses feels no need to *lie* about it; after all, if she lies to you and says yes, you risk ridicule she could have stopped with a "no, you look hideous" versus her telling you "yes, you look awful" and just hurting your feelings personally.

Hardworker: Give Sestiva a task, she will get it done. And when she does a task she is focused like a dragon chasing Thread.

Negative:

Stubborn: Yeah. Don't try to outstubborn her.

Holds Grudges: Sestiva may 'forgive' but she does not forget very easily, even if you apologiuze.

Tactless: See her honesty. She is not very versed in the art of letting people down easy.

History:
Sestiva was born in Keroon to Tanovar, a Hold drover, and his wife Serina. Youngest child and only daughter (three brothers). Tanovar worked the trails across Keroon, moving the Hold flocks and herds across the grazing grounds during spring and summer, down to the great markets to be sold in autumn, and then back to the Hold for winterquarters.

-His wife passed away shortly after Sestiva turns 3. As the trail was nowhere for very young children to be, Tanovar arranged for his children to be raised by their maternal relatives at the Hold proper. Sestiva was very close with her brothers, and she grew up quite the tomboy rather than the cute little girl her aunts wanted to make her into.

When she was eight, Ses and her siblings asked to spend the Turn on the trail with her family assisting with the herds instead of spending yet another year waiting for her father to return to winter at the Hold. It was granted over her aunt's objections on the grounds that it was right and proper for the kids to experience what their dad did with an eye towards picking up his vocation when they became older. Tanovar, however, had other ideas. While he had no problem with his sons joining his herding team, he didn't think this was the right life for his daughter at all no matter how capable she was with animals.

Turned out the universe did have different plans in mind for Sestiva. She befriended the beasthealer on the drover team when she assisted the journeyman crafter in treating an injury to one of the herding dogs, and turned out to have more interest in the plants he was using to make the dog well rather than the actual veterinary techniques on display. The crafter picked up on that, and deftly steered the girl towards apprenticing with the Healercraft to learn more when she was old enough.

This she did in her twelfth Turn, joining the ranks of the apprentices in the Healer Hall that autumn. Her father was more than happy at her choice; before she left to travel to Fort Hold and the Hall there, he bartered hard at the Keroon Gather that season and won her a gift of two firelizard eggs that hatched into Brown Hush and Green Trouble. "To help you send letters," the drover told her, before plunking his hat on her head and telling her to study hard.

Sestiva wasn't about to disappoint her family and their hopes in her, so study hard she did. She turned out to be a really good student in herbalism and pharmacology, and she chose to focue on that as the Turns passed. Around this time, the news of the dragon plague slowly drifted through the hall, and there was a sort of resurgence in pharmacology studies. Ses found herself assisting journeymmen and masters in their research in the Hall, although based on reports none of the research seemed to bear any sort of fruit.

The Universe had another one of its funny moments thing in the form of a blue dragon taking interest in her during a searchrider visit in her 14th Turn. The news about the dragon plague had not been kept from the apprentices, of course, but the uncertain future kept a lot of would-be candidates from accepting. After all, the chance of losing half your soul when your dragon died from a plague no one could isolate the cause of or treat gave a lot of potentials pause.

Sestiva accepted, though, out of a desire to see the plague for herself (something in her teenage mind made her think that she'd figure something out when a hallful of Masters hadn't. Ah, hubris). She failed to Impress in that small clutch, but when offered the chance to return to the Hall, she's declined.

Hey, this all looks good to me! Just a minor clarification on the timeline; currently all dragons born from northern bloodlines (the green clutches) seem to be immune to the plague, there hasn't been a death since 182.

If you want to have Sestiva's interest in the plague to play into her decision to take up a Search you can either put her back a bit to between late 177 and early 181 - either making her younger at the time or older now.

Another avenue, if you'd be happy to have her Searched more recently, is to have her brought in for Gold Julith's clutch at the beginning of 183, so quite recently. Julith came from the south and so it was known that there was no promise that her hatchlings would be immune.

Equally if you'd like to leave her Search time at the point it is she could have an interest in meeting plague survivors, up to you! Just let us know when you've decided.

I am so sorry for getting the dates wrong. I can certainly correct when I get a moment.
So 181 would make her a year younger, correct?

No problem at all!

And it's up to you whether you'd like to make her a year younger, or if you'd prefer to have her searched a bit earlier. If she's 16 now, a Search in 181 would make her 14 at the time.

The last dragons sick with the plague were dying in the middle of the turn, and Malsalth's first and last clutch was hatched in the 5th month. It sounds like being searched for that one might well fit your story well? So she could have arrived any time from the 1st to the 5th month and so been able to see the effects of the plague first hand, and the healers' attempts to save them.

That would work, yes. Give me a bit to make corrections, I'm still at work.

Okay, changed it to getting searched in her 14th year.

I sort of see her filling up a diary during her Candidacy with all the observations and info from interviews about what the plague was like.

Some girls write about cute boys and parties.

Sestiva writes about incubation periods and morbidity in weyr populations.
