                                                        Rhis can easily be observed as having a nervous demeanor—and how could they not? Being an illithid living on the surface world without a hive isn't exactly the easiest on the nerves, and Rhis could attest to that. Introverted and guarded, Rhis often comes off as standoffish, sparing few words to those they're unfamiliar with. Though appearing stoic, likely in part due to their alien visage, Rhis is simply shy and fears coming off as hostile or frightening to what little company they find themselves with. Though it may not appear so, Rhis loves the company of others, but they find difficultly in opening up and connecting with other people.

                                                          Rhis believes themself only to be an illithid in appearance, as they maintain some of the thoughts, personality, and memories of a human woman. Before they "became" an illithid, Rhis remembered being captured by mind flayers along with their lover, a halfling named Faye. While searching for alchemical ingredients, they had ventured too close into mind flayer territory, to which they were taken rather than eaten on the spot. Faye was likely taken as a thrall, while Rhis was reserved to become the host to an illithid tadpole.

                                                          A few days after the insertion, Rhis managed to escape and immediately began to concoct a potion that would kill the tadpole eating away at her brain. This potion was either made incorrectly, as Rhis was not a seasoned alchemist, or it was too late for it to stop the ceremorphosis process entirely. Rhis’ body still underwent physical metamorphosis into an adult illithid, though some of her personality, adult memories, and a vague sense of self remained. Long-term memories were entirely absent, such as childhood memories, but memories from the past few years remained clear. Even with the odds against them, with a portion of their self lost and their appearance twisted into that of a monstrous illithid, Rhis was still determined to piece their life back together and find Faye.

                                                          In the meantime, however, Rhis would have to focus on surviving and navigating their new life, which at first, was not so great. Either having to disguise themself or face fear and hatred everywhere they went, simply existing became exhausting. However, there was someone who took interest in the poor, lonely creature Rhis had become. An eladrin physiologist by the name of Vicaris became fascinated with Rhis, and better yet, the idea of being able to study a living mind flayer up close. He offered Rhis a place to stay and a means of sustenance while he studied them, to which Rhis obliged, having no better options. Though Vicaris was respectable as a scholar, he had a reputation for shady dealings and connections, especially when it came to acquiring specimens. His means of supplying Rhis with brains was among one of these shady dealings, but if it kept his mind flayer alive and fed, then it was no issue for him. While being studied, Rhis slowly by surely became acquainted with the town. As to be expected, the people were fearful at first, but as the years went by, warmed up to their resident illithid.

                                                          With a little help from Vicaris, Rhis became involved with a nearby magic school. Already having a concept of conjuration magic from their host, Rhis had no problem building upon this knowledge. As the fear of their alien visage melted away from locals, Rhis became somewhat of a spectical, and though they appreciated the friendlier attitude towards them, being seen as a curiosity began to wear on them and they grew standoffish.

                                                          Every day since the incident, Rhis had thought about Faye. It's been at least five years, but they've continued to hold out hope that she may be alive. The feat was not only incredibly dangerous, but could possibly be all for nothing if she had been eaten or escaped. Rhis wouldn't be able to take on an entire illithid hive on their own, but endangering an entire group of people to save someone who might not even be there didn't seem like a good idea either.

                                                          Even with the many risks, Rhis was willing to take that chance if it meant knowing what became of Faye.

                                                          Rhis is a willowy, unusually colored illithid, with sallowy skin as apposed to the usual purple. However, down along their spine, there are splotches of mauve. They have large, protuberant white eyes, and a dry, rubbery complexion as a result of a malnourished diet. On each side of their head are two small ear-like fins that can be moved at will. As with most illithids, Rhis possesses four tentacles which can be controlled independently and used to grapple objects.

                                                          1. Recently, attacks by strange, aberrant creatures have been reported around the town of Spalding. These creatures are described as ceremorphic in nature, meaning they were a part of the illithid family. Along with some of these creatures being entirely undocumented, they didn't appear to be coming from the Underdark.

                                                          2. Sighting of a "purple worm" have been reported around the town of Spalding. The creature is said to live in burrows underground/in the sewer system, and pop out at night to feed on unsuspecting passersby. However, its behavior and feeding habits are unusual for a purple worm, leading others to believe it may be something else.

Though they each differ, most of them end up with Rhis just missing Faye somewhere, or being told she was seen somewhere, only to be unable to find her. In all of these dreams, they never have a concept of who they are, whether they're their host or as they are now.

                                                          ■ The further back Rhis' host memories go, the vaguer and more nonexistent they becomes. Only the last few years are clear, like their own, while ones beyond that are more just a sense of knowing, like it was read from a book. Childhood memories are entirely absent. Rhis does not know the names of their host's parents, their hometown, or of any family.

                                                          ■ The type of mixture created by human Rhis is also a little difficult to recall. The memories from near the final moment, when their host's brain was being slowly eaten, is spotty. Since Rhis was not an alchemist, there wasn't too much know-how going into the mixture, though she did have Faye's notes on her. It's possible that she attempted to either create a potion that would kill an illithid tadpole; a weaker poison she thought would kill it, but not her; or a poison that would kill her as to take the parasite down with her. It's also possible that she wasn't lucid enough to really be creating something properly at all, and created something with unpredictable effects, which happened to stunt the illithid tadpole in a particular way. By that point, it would be unclear if the unknown mixture is what killed her first, or the tadpole.

Human Rhis was the definition of eccentric. She was an extrovert by nature and loved to meet new people. She was an open book and loved to help others, but she could be worry-wart and would overthink situations at times. A people's person, she was patient when it came to others and had worked at various magic schools as a professor. Rhis was known to be laid back and jovial, making jokes and generally trying to make everyone around her happy.

As a wizard, Rhis acquired her magic skills through studying and specialized in conjuration.

Outgoing, confident, passionate, personable

Rhis [Illithid]
Illithid Rhis is more cautious and reserved. Though they enjoy the company of others, they are more guarded, often coming off as shy or standoffish. Once they are comfortable around someone, or they get into something, Rhis can become about as talkative as their host, going into long-winded spiels about what they love. With their more cautious nature, Rhis is also less emotionally driven; it's not that they don't feel emotion, but they tend to not get attached as quickly and deeply as human Rhis did. They are more prone to holding grudges, but they are not beyond reason either. Though Rhis is far less talkative, they have maintained their host's sense of humor. It usually comes off as deadpan, but can be more energetic when around people they're comfortable with.

The basis of Rhis' magical knowledge comes from their host, but they have since built upon this. Not every spell had carried over to Rhis, but they had enough know-how to function with it.

Emotion and Memory
To say that Rhis is just a mind flayer that experiences emotions and the like as other humanoid races do is not entirely true. It may appear as though they do, given their more gentle, docile nature, but they actually experience a smaller range of emotions, similar to that of a standard illithid. Rhis' most common emotions are that of fear, anxiety, and despair. Rhis does, however, understand the concept of other emotions, whereas other illithids may not to the extend they do. Given that the thoughts, personality, and memories of their host imprinted on them more than usual, Rhis has memories of feelings they hadn't exactly experienced themself. Happiness and love are two that stand out to them the most. Rhis may not be able to experience these emotions on their own, at least the way others do. Like other illithids, Rhis can experience a wider range of emotions by consuming the brains of sentient creatures that can feel them.

Likewise, Rhis' sense of self and state of mind could also be a result of their unusual "upbringing." Rather than be immediately assimilated into an illithid colony's hivemind, Rhis was cut off and left to die due to abnormalities being detected in them after their host escaped and tampered with their development. During ceremorphosis, Rhis was found by a physiologist who took them into his lab to observe and study. After the process was complete and Rhis had been "born," they were mostly left alone in a cell, uncertain of where they were, and who they are. From the mangled pieces of lingering thoughts, memories, and emotions of their host, Rhis began to weave together a narrative with this limited pool of knowledge to make sense of the world around them. They became obsessed with these garbled memories, and especially fixated on Faye and the feelings of love their host felt towards her. Rhis wishes to find her as both some means of closure that they inherited from their host's dying thoughts, as well as to attempt to feel love once again.

Most of the memories Rhis conflates with their own were most recent ones, such as their host's capture, some parts of their escape, and the emotions they felt through most of it. More distant memories feel more like footnotes in Rhis' mind, rather than full memories they can picture and access. Like they had read a book and these were minor details described to them, but obviously were not something experienced by them. At times, they may also experience strong senses of deja vu, or a certain smell or sight may trigger familiarities they can't explain.

Rhis doesn't 100% believe that they are truly their host, but rather they desperately cling to that sense of identity as there was nothing else for them to latch onto. Maybe more towards the beginning they did, but once they began to experience more of their own life, it became more evident that they were not the same person.

Defects
Rhis became defective after their host escaped captivity. In a state of delirium, the original Rhis attempted to create a powder that they had previously used to treat migraines. Whether or not they succeeded in creating it properly, this concoction had an adverse effect in the tadpole's development. Being drawn back near the Underdark once the parasite had grown more, abnormalities were detected in it by other mind flayers, who then proceeded to "exile" the host and stunted tadpole, leaving them in a vulnerable state to wander and die on the surface. It was guaranteed that Rhis would not survive alone on the surface; if they didn't die during unsupervised ceremorphosis, then they would surely be killed by anyone or anything that caught sight of them.

They were, however, found by an elven physiologist named Vicarus, who recognized the signs of ceremorphosis and decided to study this rarely seen process up close at his lab.

Upon competition of ceremorphosis, Vicarus began to notice various defects and abnormalities within his subject as his study of them continued. The most immediate was their color; most illithids were purple or blue, but Rhis was a pale, sallow color, with only faint mauve blotches along their spine. Their facial structure was off as well, whereas illithids typically had smaller eyes in relation to their more prominent brow, Rhis had large, protuberant eyes that blinked independently of each other. Their features overall seemed more soft and less defined than other mind flayers. In comparison, they could be described as more "cute," but to a mind flayer, they would be considered grotesque and malformed.

Rhis' demeanor was also strikingly docile. They were overall a nervous, demure creature that didn't like attracting attention. They seemed to lack the superiority complex many illithids were known to have and thus were not aggressive and dismissive towards other beings. This could be due to the appropriation of some of their host's memories and personality traits; that or having never been assimilated to an illithid colony, where hostilities towards others would be taught.

Their psionic abilities were weaker as well, though this could also be a result of being untrained in psionics. Rhis would walk as opposed to levitate and seemed more reliant on wizardry than their inherent psionic abilities.

Wizardry
The original Rhis was a very skilled and knowledgeable wizard, having spent many, many years learning and honing her craft. Illithid Rhis had only inherited a small portion of this knowledge, just barely enough so to have a foundation to build from on their own. They would still be considered a beginner, but for someone who had only been sentient for a few years and never set foot in a magic school, they knew a considerable bit.

Faye
Ever since Rhis was "born," they have fixated on their host's relationship with a halfling woman named Faye. As the original Rhis' girlfriend of many years, she was obviously very fond of Faye, and this memory of love has transferred to Rhis, though they have not experienced these emotions themself before. It could be said that their fixation has more to do with the way Faye made Rhis feel, rather than Faye herself. Of course, Rhis had also inherited their hosts dying thoughts of making sure she was safe, further leading them to believe that they actually love her. It's likely upon meeting Faye again, Rhis would not feel what the way they expected to, and even more likely, Faye would not hold the same feelings for them as they had the original Rhis.

This revelation would be hard on Rhis, whose ultimate goal this entire time was just to feel love again.

In their frustration, Rhis may be tempted to eat Faye, or have dreams of doing so. This would be a desperate, last resort at obtaining what Rhis had sought from the start, by forcefully extracting any thoughts and memories relating to Faye's relationship with their host.
