Dragon Plague The first case of Dragon Plague appeared in Autumn 177 of the 9th Interval. The disease was at first thought to be a relatively mild respiratory infection. By the time the true potential of the disease was identified it was too late. The Dragon Plague was able to wipe out 90% of the Northern dragon population in only a few short turns. The recovery rate was poor, with only a few infected individuals managing to recover, and many of those being left with permanent damage. The plague appears innocuous in the early stages. Beginning as a cough or wheeze that doesn't seem to bother the dragon it affects too severely. For the first sevenday the plague could easily be mistaken for a cough or cold and many dragons feel fine within themselves. After this period however symptoms begin to rapidly increase. The coughs become more frequent and severe, beginning to cause damage to the dragon's throat and disrupt their breathing. Usually within a month of symptoms appearing the dragon is incapable of flight or any activity that requires rapid or deep breathing. These breathing difficulties only serve to further weaken the dragon as eating, drinking, and moving become more uncomfortable, and sleep becomes ever more difficult. The ability of the dragon to breath becomes more and more disrupted and uneven, until eventually they will stop breathing altogether. It is not uncommon for dragons to survive these episodes asphyxiation, their ability to breath returning to them within a few minutes. Unfortunately no dragon has survived more than three episodes, and the majority of patients will succumb to this. The majority of dragons will have either died or taken themselves between within 3 months of symptoms appearing. In the early cases of the plague some dragons were able to survive for over a turn with symptoms.

Plague Risk The majority of dragons in the Northern continent are immune to the Dragon Plague, either through genetic immunity or by having survived becoming afflicted earlier in the outbreak. However there are still numerous dragons who are still capable of being affected by the plague. Their risk is detailed below. Default Plague RiskThis plague risk is for all adult dragons. This means any dragon that has been protected from exposure to the plague will have this plague risk upon coming into contact with it. Risk of Mortality: 90% Risk of Infection Survival: 5% Risk of Innate Immunity: 5% Hatchling Plague RiskThis plague risk is for dragon hatchlings that are not known to have both parents be plague immune. Usually the majority of plague affected hatchlings will perish within their eggs before having a chance to impress. If a clutch is protected from the plague the risk will stay the same once they are exposed to the plague. Hatchling plague risk comes in 7 ranks of increasing severity, each with their own percentage chances of infection and mortality. Plague Risk Mitigation and Rolling In certain circumstances plague risk can be reduced for individual dragons. This was the case for the Entourage Contest. These situations can only be created by staff and will always be available for a limited time, if we ever do anything like it again. Dragons with Default Plague Risk will be rolled when their character profile is approved, provided there is no event or situation that involves rolling at a different time. Hatchling Plague RiskThese dragons can have their risk reduced through Weyrling activities. Lessons, threads, solos, and prompts detailed in the Weyrling Guide are automatically included. Any writing playing the dragon as suffering from the plague will also count towards this total*. If there is a thread, solo or other piece of writing you feel should be considered towards your dragon's total please contact staff for an official verdict. Only writing that directly features the individual dragon will be counted. Risk is reduced at 1% per 200 words in any of the above counted situations. Clutches that have at risk hatchlings will be rolled by staff as the hatchlings progress. Dragons with higher risk will be exempt from rolling for longer to allow their players time to lower their risk should they want to. Each month 1 to 4 hatchlings will be randomly rolled from the unrolled dragons within the appropriate risk bracket(s). Once a dragon is in the appropriate risk bracket they will stay there until they are rolled. This means that a rank 2 dragon may be rolled alongside a rank 7 dragon if they have not been rolled earlier, although this won't affect either dragons risk. Rolls are not linear, for example it is not necessary for all rank 1 dragons to be rolled before rank 2 dragons begin rolling. * You are welcome to play your dragon being affected by the plague at any time. Although these posts can be used to reduce the dragon's plague risk, their illness cannot be retconned. If your dragon rolls for Innate Immunity after you have played them as being affected they will make a full recovery. Should you play your dragon's health improving and then they roll Mortality then they will relapse and perish.
