Quote: Sal has always been known as a lighthearted, yet sardonic person with a long reckless streak. It has never so much been that Sal was reckless due to shortsightedness, but more as a means of survival. Since a young age, he has been a notably stubborn and resolute person, greatly preferring to do things his own way rather than be told what to do. A spontaneous person, Sal preferred to live his life with little to no schedule, instead taking everything as it came. Though he had no problem setting plans, he quickly came to see them as obligations. Sal's means of feeding and his tendency to exacerbate the fears of others has lead him to be perceived as cruel and insensitive. Even if it may be difficult for him to resist sometimes, Sal generally knows where to draw a line.

Quote: Sal was born to a human mother and djinn father. His mother Nora was in her early twenties when she struck up a warm relationship with a man named Salim, who was local to her college town. Though it started off as nothing serious, they both began to develop deep feelings for each other over time. However, ever since Salim's appearance in town, many students and locals began to go missing. With this investigation came hunters, who discovered a small djinn colony nearby, which Salim belonged to. With his colony slain and only him remaining, Salim confessed to Nora what was happening. More concerned for his well-being than anything else, Nora didn't know how to take all this information in; it was so outlandish that she almost didn't believe it. Fearing for his own safety and not wanting to drag Nora into something that could become gruesome, Salim left after giving her a final farewell. Shortly after, Nora discovered she would be the mother of a djinn child.
Despite the tragedy his mother faced, Sal's overall upbringing was uneventful. While he was still young, Nora married a man name Phil Stevens, who she would eventually have a daughter with. Overall, the Stevens were a family of soft, mild-mannered people who seldom stepped out of line or made waves. Sal, however, usually stood out among his stepfather's family in both looks and nature, overall sharing more in common with his mother personality-wise.
With most djinn living in secluded groups and feeding off captive prey, Sal had to adapt from a very young age in order live in human society. Being a djinn that feeds off fear, he developed the ability to feed not exclusively by touch, but through proximity. Though this method was less satisfying, his needs could be sated well enough if he was around large amounts of it, leading Sal to fall in with thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies. There was no need for him to force fear, either, if the goal was to willingly put themselves in dangerous situations for the thrill of it. As another survival method, Sal also developed a knack for mischief and enjoyed shocking and frightening his targets. His pranks would vary in extremity depending on what he could pull off. At times, it was difficult for him to know when to stop, leading him to look insensitive and cruel. One who bore the brunt of Sal's feeding habits was his little sister Zoey, who was a particularly timid and easily frighted child. It became a regular occurrence in their house for Sal to relentlessly target Zoey, though it just came off as a big brother picking on his sister. Nora was never sure how to explain to her family the truth about Sal and worried there would be fatal backlash should they even believe her in the first place. The need to protect her son from suffering the same fate as his father was great, so much so that only she and Sal knew what he was.
With his unusual method of feeding, Sal never once used his poison or killed anyone... until a hiking accident. Sal, his best friend Chase, and a few others went hiking on a particularly steep and perilous mountain range. Sal and Chase began to egg each other on to do stunts, until Chase found himself barley clinging onto the mountainside. Sal tried to pull him up, but went down with him. Still clinging to him, Chase's fear became potent and intoxicating, and Sal began inadvertently feeding off him at full power. The two eventually hit the ground from a fatal height, though Chase was dead before impact, with his innards later being identified as liquefied. As a djinn, Sal survived the fall, but was badly injured. Chase's jellied insides were ruled as a freak accident and Sal was not suspected of anything, but he knew it was more than that. Even if Chase would be dead either way, it haunted Sal to realize what he was capable of doing.
Following the unusual circumstances of his friend's death, Sal found himself as a hunter's next target. Having caught word of a young man's organs being liquefied after a fatal accident, as well as having blue hand print-like marks on him, the hunter managed to track everything back to Sal, who they suspected of being a dangerous, fear-eating djinn. Paranoid and not wanting to drag anyone into it, he left home to live on the go, refusing to stay in place too long. Having only told his mother what was going on, he asked her to make something up about his sudden disappearance and not to tell anyone the truth.

↪ desperation has captured my soul my mind stricken with fear //////////////////////// //////////////////////// //////////////////////// [ don't see why I should try to go on ] the voice of reason's calling me — it's calling me, but I can't hear it ◢
The sky was still dark—but whether it was the creeping night or early morning, Sal couldn’t discern. He was used to taking backroads—they weren’t a problem for him, but it was easy to lose track of time when driving to nowhere. At least he hadn’t seen a soul in quite a while, which could mean he finally lost them. It wasn’t like there was somewhere he needed to be that the hunter could be waiting to ambush him—maybe, it was finally safe. Maybe, he finally lost them… and yet, Sal couldn’t take his eyes from the review mirror, paying it just as much, if not more mind than the road before him. Where even was he going? Not only had Sal not seen a single car for the past few hours, but any semblance of civilization, besides a few run-down barns and homes of questionable habitability.
That was, until after a sudden sharp turn, Sal was faced with a sudden strip of road lined with various chain restaurants and businesses. He sighed, easing himself and releasing the deathgrip he just noticed he had on the wheel. There was bound to be somewhere he could stop for a while. Driving beyond the strip and into a little old town where a stone sign, now warn and hardly readable, read, ”Welcome to Blackwater” or at least, Sal was pretty sure that’s what it said; it was a little hard to tell. The town itself, though it obviously had seen better days, had a strange charm to it—but maybe it was just the fact that it was the first piece of civilization he had seen for hours. Either way, there was bound to at least be plumbing here. He hoped.
Near the end of town, Sal whipped his car into the first motel parking lot he spotted, which also happened to be the only motel in the entire area. He supposed it made sense—who would want to stay here?
Besides himself, of course.
Sitting motionless in his car for the first in hours, he still couldn’t remove his eyes from the review mirror. A moment of hypervigilance passed before he allowed himself to finally close his eyes. It stung. With a reluctance to his grasp, Sal reached for the phone he had abandoned in the cupholder. Switching it on, his eyes opened, wincing as it began to start up.
Quote: Wedenesday | 5:27 AM
12 missed calls | Mom
8 unread messages | Mom
1 unread message | Zoey
Sal exhaled. “s**t.”
Quote: Zoey | Tuesday, 6:02PM Are you okay?? Please text back if you see this. Everyone is super worried
Who was everyone? Did his mother tell the entire family? With a frustrated sigh, Sal powered off his phone before stepping out of the car, giving the parking lot a vigilant stare before pacing across it.
The motel had the looks of one he'd normally avoid, having slept in his own car over sloppy flophouses on the side of the road such as this, but now wasn’t the time for that. He desperately needed to feel safe, even if that meant staying in a piss-soaked motel in the middle of nowhere. After booking his room, Sal disappeared through the door, immediately faceplanting into the bed.
//////////////////////// //////////////////////// ////////////////////////
Sal awoke a few hours later in nearly the same position he dropped. Lifting his head, the smell of wet carpet was the first thing he noticed, which at least meant that there was some attempt to clean the rooms, even if it just made the place smell kind of terrible. According to the yellowing analogue clock hanging across the room, it was afternoon. Sal stood up, groggy after getting more than a usual night’s sleep. Approaching the blinds, he peeked through the slits before making a weary exit. He was tired of being cooped up—and even more tired of being alone. There was safety in numbers, even among strangers.
He grimaced to himself as he began walking uptown in a rushed pace. This entire situation was horrifically new to him—Sal, who once thought himself fearless, now walked with uncertainty in each step and a glance casted over his shoulder. Approaching what appeared to be Blackwater’s main street, Sal stuck close to the windows that lined the shopfronts, glancing in as he quickly passed by to evaluate just how many people there were in this backwoods town. Just up ahead sat a small diner nestled amongst the other shops; making a quick glance to the passing cars, Sal took cover within the little hole in the wall. His long hair was bedraggled, tossed in a way that suggested he had just gotten out of bed—which was absolutely the case. As much as he tried to hide it, there was a subtle, yet distinct grimace on his face as he seated himself. A few other patrons were scattered throughout the small eatery, but he couldn't help but overhear the conversation of a group of three sitting at the table behind him.
“Can't imagine this place gets too many visitors," Sal said, turning his head in their direction.

▌ RELATION Sal's mother
Nora has always been an eccentric, free-spirited woman. Now living in the suburbs, she has acquired the reputation of being an unusual person, at least by her neighborhood's standards. Formerly into the alternative fashion scene in her younger years, she has kept an interest in the strange and unusual, contrasting greatly with the plain and subdued family she married into.
Her relationship with her son Sal has always been close. The two of them have more in common than either cared to admit and would at times clash because of this. Nora has always closely guarded Sal's secret in fear of him being hunted and killed.
Now with exactly that happening, she has been worried sick and frantically searching for his whereabouts.

▌ RELATION Sal's half-sister
Growing up, Zoey and Sal couldn't have been any more different. A quiet and particularly timid child, Zoey often found herself bearing the brunt of Sal's teasing. However, as the two grew older, they began to share a similar willfulness.
After Sal moved out, Zoey remained with her parents in the suburbs until she would go on to attend college at 18. Now in her Sophomore year, Zoey had been focusing on school until she visited home during spring break. When she arrived, she found her mother in tears, claiming that Sal was in danger and had gone missing. She helped her mother attempt to get a hold of Sal, but with no apparent luck.
Shortly after, Zoey opened Snapchat and looked at the map to see that Sal's location was marked in ____. With no other leads to Sal's location, Zoey decided to investigate, hoping to find her brother.
