Name: Hemari
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: No
Role/rank: Candidate/Weyrbrat
Origin: Fort Weyr

Appearance: Hemari has what can only be described as resting mopey face. His features are overly long and droopy, especially his eyes, with heavy lids that make him look like he is half asleep all of the time. Long, black hair that tends to drape over his pale features makes him look like he is trying to hide. Yet, his green eyes sparkle with curiousity and intelligence, so those who know Hemari will quickly realize he is actually paying attention to everything around him.

At 6'4" but with a thin build, his body is long and lanky, and he seems to struggle with how to work his own arms and legs. His movements are pretty awkward, no matter what he tries to do. Everything he wears also seems to hang on him like it is three sizes too big, unless it's specifically tailored for him.

Personality: A naturally bookish person, Hemari seems to absorb everything he reads and never forgets it. He has a great memory for words, so he has always excelled at his lessons and enjoys getting the chance to teach others what he knows, too. Information is his best friend, so he is always looking for the latest news around the Weyr and the rest of Pern. While he likes to focus the most on dragon knowledge and politics, if a topic interests him, he will want to know everything about it, no matter how niche or useless it might be in his every day life.

Unfortunately, once he thinks he's learned everything about a topic, Hemari becomes stubborn and refuses to acknowledge that he could be wrong. After all, if he read about something, that has to be the right thing, and not the experience of someone who's worked directly in the field or with the topic. If Hemari's difficulty with socializing with others in a casual setting doesn't drive potential friends away, his refusal to realize other people might know more than him certainly will. Hemari doesn't talk much, but when he does, it's often to argue or to blurt out an awkward comment. He is the type of person to ask women when they are due even if they are not pregnant, as he never seemed to develop proper social etiquette.

Despite his obvious flaws, Hemari is loyal to the few friends he does have, or even to anyone who happened to be nice to him once. This leaves him vulnerable to being manipulated, especially by those that Hemari is really fond of. He is happy to do his friends and companions favours if they just ask, which means he could easily be asked to do multiple things and he won't question them. Even though he has been taken advantage of before, Hemari doesn't seem to be able to learn from his past experiences, or perhaps he is too naive to see that he puts himself in the same position over and over again. He thinks working hard is good for the Weyr, no matter what he is doing, so it doesn't matter why in the end.

History: The product of flightlust, Hemari was left anonymously in the Weyr's creche during the 166th turn. As a young, shy child, Hemari only made a few friends that he was extremely loyal to, even if they teased or pushed him around. He would secretly do chores for the other kids in the hopes they would like him, but for the most part, the other kids just took advantage of him. As they got older, those that didn't bully him mostly lost interest in him, so he found himself alone a lot during free time. It was during that time that he took up a love of reading and learning. An old, dry textbook could amuse him for hours, which did not help his standing in the social hierarchy of the creche.

Once he was old enough to become a Candidate, he leaped at the opportunity. He started standing on and off for clutches during the first turns of the dragons' plague, which threw the weyrs into turmoil. During some of the worst of the plague, Hemari doubled down on his private studies, hoping to learn anything and everything he could about dragons, from their basic anatomy to their preferred foods, in the belief that it would somehow make him more appealing to the future hatchlings he would meet. He even tried to befriend some of the greens and blues around the Weyr in order to get information right from the source, with mixed results. It turns out years of bullying and isolation didn't do much for his social skills, even when talking to dragons.

Currently, he's been staying in the background, waiting for his chance to shine once (and not if) his dragon partner chooses him.

Other: Hemari has been attending Hatchings since 179, so he is quite familiar with the process. He has a particular fondness for greens, so seeing that they are able to clutch and produce healthy hatchlings has made him appreciate them more than ever.
