No one has posted anything in here in several years, so this is probably another post for the ghosts, but what the hell, I'll breathe some life into this ol' thing.
Fake n***s! That was a thing!
What did you think? What did I think? Admittedly, it's probably my least favorite of the four-piece BnL era. Don't get me wrong, there are some absolutely amazing songs on there, but overall, I just felt that it was a bit lackluster and not very exciting. I suppose I'll do my usual song-by-song breakdown.
Canada Dry: I really like this one. It sounds like a song about wanting to rebuild an old friendship / relationship. Considering that this album came out around the band's 30th anniversary, I can't help but wonder if it was a reflection on the band itself and wanting to reconcile and put old grudges and differences aside with certain former members. Probably the most Canadian-sounding song ever written.
Bringing it Home: Who the hell couldn't love this one?! Very anthem-y.
Invisible Fence: A good song with a good message, but admittedly, I don't listen to this one very much. Political songs are very important and need to be written, but when I'm listening to music, I like to listen for the entertainment factor, not to be reminded how crappy the world is. That's just me, though. Sorry, Kev.
Lookin' Up: Super fun! Super catchy! Super Ed-ish! This sounds like it could have been on an album by The American Authors. Love it!
Sunshine: In my opinion, this is some of Ed's best singing on record. This is also some of Ed's best songwriting. It's not an upbeat song by any stretch of the imagination, though, so I don't always listen to this one.
Dusty Rooms: I think I like this one? I'm not even going to hazard a guess as to what it might be about, though.
We Took the Night: Right there! Jim Creeggan strikes again with another abso-freakin'-lutely amazing song! Holy damn, I love this one! One of my favorites on the album. I want more songs from Jim!
Navigate: My other favorite song on the album. This one is so bizarre. Lyrically, it's pretty sparse, but the lyrics that are there, oh, man...so damn good. Really cool imagery. The music itself has to be mentioned too. The electronic hip-hop beat is odd for a BnL song, but very fitting. The sort of ambient humming / droning throughout it really creates an atmosphere and only adds to its greatness.
Flying Dreams: Okay, I feel terrible about this. When I first heard this one, I couldn't help but think how miserable it was and that I didn't like it very much. I later read in an interview with Kevin that it was written about his daughter who has Down's Syndrome. She is not able to walk on her own or speak. It turned out to be a true song and truly feel horrible for dismissing it at first.
Nobody Better: What an interesting song. It doesn't really sound like anything that you'd expect from BnL. I wasn't sure how I felt about this one at first, but I grew to like it quite a bit. That syncopated beat is pretty awesome.
Bag of Bones: While it is entertaining listening to a song written from the perspective of a dog, this is another one that I don't always listen to.
You + Me vs. the World: Aw man, this one is fantastic! It's got that weird 80s-esqe synth pop sound to it and some really fun lyrics to boot! "So, bring on the fire swamp / We're never giving up / I'll be your Westley, you'll be my Buttercup" That makes me giggle like a child every time.
20/20 Hindsight: Meh...it's...alright. What I don't like about this song is the music. It sounds so...uninspired. So...standard. To be prefectly honest, so boring. I feel like it would have been better if it had been given more of a folky / acoustic sound.
The Township of King - Okay, once again, this is a song that I have mixed feelings on. Like Invisible Fence, I feel like it's a very important song, but the lyrics just bring me down, so I don't want to listen to it super often. That being said, I can't even begin to say how much I love the music. This is some of the most amazing and beautiful music that BnL have ever created. If there was an instrumental version of this song, I'd probably listen to it on repeat for hours.
I feel like I was very harsh in this "review". I didn't mean for it to be, honest! I really do think it's a good album. Just...not my favorite.
