
Lately there's a trend where you just throw all this stuff on your avatar to hide it, thus creating a scene instead of focusing on your avatar. It's hip, it's cool and can be a lil' bit expensive. If you look through the forums you'll find other ways but some will leave a little something behind. (I'll link those below if you can't find this particular recipe of items.) This way works so that you're entire avatar disappears without leaving anything behind. The only thing left will be a little question mark. After which you can throw up a background which hides the question mark and you can experiment with layering of items.
I can't remember where I got the original recipe to do this, but I saved it into my closet and whip it out when I'm feeling out of avatar ideas. But here are a few other tutorials that go into much better detail than I do.

Finish by using any background you like and you're done! Experiment as much as you like to find a perfect combination of items! rofl
