The Ascent - 3 (Becomes 5)
Okay. Last round hadn't gone so amazingly, but Shane had still qualified and was moving on to the next round. Thanks for small mercies, he supposed? In any case, he was raring to go and make this next round an improvement. He was a driver, he was a winner, he was gonna do it! Things were gonna change, he could feel it!
And this first start went pretty well! The thirty degree incline was nothing for Shane's legs (never skip leg day, folks!), and he executed the leap to the first platform without a problem. Indeed, the subsequent leaps went decently well, though as he went on he started to doubt the platforms' structural integrity. Was this thing quality checked before the race...? Well, too late now!
The Descent - 2
Huh. A human-sized spiderweb. How interesting! Shane was very wary of those sticky-looking cords, though. What was going on there? Would probably be totally nasty. He didn't want to touch those.
Though he jumped in without hesitation, once was in the web, he found he was in more trouble than he expected. This was part maze, part thinking-ahead exercise, part test of the limits of one's coordination. This felt like another agility-biased obstacle, and for a moment Shane thought he was thoroughly screwed. He missed one cord and braced for impact... but managed to catch himself before the very end. Praise be to his muscles.
The Gears - 2
Okay, he made it out of the web. Apparently, however, he was still going to be made like a bug, because the next obstacle was gears! A bug trapped in a big, spider-laden machine. Kind of scary, but now wasn't the time for fear.
Shane made the mistake of thinking that slow and steady would get him through this section. WRONG! When the gears increased in speed, he was very much in danger of being spun off. oh god oh god ohgod OHGOD- okay. He made it. Not gracefully, but he made it. Yikes.
The Pipe - 3
Shane needed to step up his game, or there was no way he was going to make it to the next round. He wanted to execute the run across the top, but there was just no way. Instead, he had to crawl through the pipe as it sank and he felt as if the water was hot on his heels. Almost as if it was sentient water that could magically crawl just behind him every step of the way. Gotta go fast, Shane...
The Treads - 5
Okay, apparently he'd evolved from bug to mouse. He'd scrambled through the tube and now was at two mid-air treadmills. There was no time to question how they got there, how they were running, or any other kind of minutiae; he had to MOVE. After the hassle that was the middle of the course, this one seemed to go much better. He might have wobbled a little, but he got right back up and made the leaps. All right, now this was the way it was supposed to go!
The Chains - 5
Final obstacle, GO! It was do or die time in so many ways. He used his momentum to fling and swing his way through the chains, and while he could have done better overall, this obstacle went pretty well! Once he was on the other side, he did indeed kiss the ground, because DANG that was a little touch and go for a bit. He finished strong, but would that be enough to get him qualified? He hoped so. Still, he wondered about some of the weird stuff on the course. The shaky platforms, the water, the possibility of something weird in the water... normally he was a "do, think later," type, and he hoped that all these questions coming up now wouldn't be his undoing.
