Introduction to Firelizards

Firelizards are the smallest and by far most animalistic in nature of the dragonkin. A firelizard is only slightly smarter than an especially intelligent canine, however it is their empathy that leads to the idea that these creatures are brighter than other animals. A firelizard has the ability to somewhat bridge the communication gap with their bonded. It is not necessary to spend as much time teaching a firelizard to stay, when you can mentally provide the image of them staying. Similarly, a firelizard can sense the intent of their bonded, able to pick up on feelings of approval or disapproval very quickly. Firelizards are, in the case of the majority, social creatures; thriving in attentive environments. This is likely why the creatures are so common in Weyrs. These large areas always have carcasses for firelizards to scavenge, as well as pests to hunt. This food abundance reduces competition and can lead to dozens of firelizards living contently in close proximity to each other. A situation they seem to enjoy.

Firelizard Colours

Green
90% of green firelizards are between 20 and 23 inches in length
Greens are the smallest firelizards, but also the smallest of any dragonkin. Like other greens they are the most numerous, with almost half of firelizards being green. They are often the fastest in their fairs, but due to the small size difference, this isn’t by an especially large margin.

Blue
90% of blue firelizards are between 21 and 24 inches in length
Behind greens, blues are the most common firelizard, making up a third of firelizards clutched. They are very similar to greens in terms of speed and stamina, although they tend to be more prone to thicker builds than greens. A blue firelizard has a poor chance of keeping up with a gold, her stamina far outmatching his, but his fair leader may choose him if suitors are few or of poor quality.

Brown
90% of brown firelizards are between 25 and 28 inches in length
Brown firelizards tend to make up the strength of a fair. Around one in seven firelizards are brown, meaning that most fairs will have one, if not two or three. They are often the muscle when a fair hunts together and the most likely to take on threats away from the nest. With firelizards it is fairly common for browns to succeed in gold flights. The minimal size and strength difference allowing them to compete with any bronzes in the fair.

Bronze
90% of bronze firelizards are between 27 and 29 inches
The largest of the males, it is not uncommon for bronzes to dominate other members by brute strength. Bronzes are proportionally more muscular than their smaller brothers, usually sacrificing their manoeuvrability for this strength. One in twenty firelizards hatched are bronze. In fairs that have a bronze they are usually the most promising candidate in a gold flight, however because of their rarity, many fairs don’t have one.

Gold
90% of gold firelizards are between 29 and 30 inches
The largest of the firelizard colours and the leader of fairs. Gold firelizards are not as scarce as gold in other dragonkin. Instead they are tied with bronze, numbering one in twenty. Gold firelizards establish fairs with their clutchmates, as well as any stray firelizards they may find along the way. She decides where the fair go and what they do. She is usually the strongest of her fair, using her strength to ensure the obedience of her fair.

White
There are no white firelizards. Eggs given assistance often hatch small, but fully coloured firelizards. Eggs that were broken and found to have white hatchlings inside have yet to break one that was still alive at this stage.

Abilities

Telempathy

This is the ability that dragonkin use to communicate, both with each other and other species. Firelizards have the weakest, telempathy of all dragonkin, able to communicate only through feelings and sensations (Such as images, smells, etc). Many bonded to firelizards describe it as a buzz of information, the small creatures often unaware that it can be hard for a human to process what they are trying to convey. Firelizards are highly emotional animals, sharing in their bonded’s feelings without much restraint. They are quickly overwhelmed by instances of high emotion.

Flaming
Firelizards have been observed to flame, if they are shown how and provided with the stone to do so. Like dragons they are capable of flaming until the gas runs out, at which point they will vomit back up the firestone. Most firelizards don’t flame for no reason, but there are a handful that like to gather chips of firestone from the stores and use it.

Between
The ability to go between is one unique to dragons and firelizards. Firelizards have a very fine control and are able to use between as a method of travel, able to go anywhere they can visualise. Unlike dragons, firelizards seem to between near instinctively, showing very little thought or planning when jumping. They are usually capable of going between shortly after hatching, not needing any instruction on how to do so. They also do no need images provided for them, capable of remembering a location they may have only visit once or seen in another’s memory.

Command
Should an individual defy a gold she has the ability to command their obedience. In firelizard this ability is fairly weak and would feel similar to a moderately forceful whack from the gold to another firelizard. Larger dragonkin would probably be as irritated by this as the firelizard hitting them physically. A gold is most likely to use their command as a power boost to establish their dominance and only in times of conflict. Non-dragonkin are unaffected by command.

Impression

Firelizards bond instinctively. When a firelizard hatches it immediately seeks out food and bonds to whoever provides it with an approachable mind. Firelizards seem capable of impressing to the majority of people, although they do not bond to young children. Generally impressing a firelizard should not be attempted by someone younger than ten turns. Firelizard bonds are built on affection and, should the firelizard be treated cruelly, they can and will sever their bond.

Flights and Cluching

A firelizard flight is a simple affair. The female will broadcast her desire for suitors and then take to the air. Often a female will choose the strongest or fastest male in the pack. Firelizard flights are much shorter that a dragon flight, usually lasting a maximum of a candlemark.

Most gold firelizards will go at least twelve months between clutching and rising again. Occasionally a gold firelizard will fail to clutch, at which point she will be rise again within three to six months. Green firelizards follow a similar pattern, however they rarely clutch. A gold firelizard most often will have a fair to attend to her nest, allowing her to gather enough food and defend her eggs. Greens are usually in fairs and lay their eggs away from where the gold might find them. Often these nests are abandoned, poorly located, or raided while the green is away. A green with a fair or that has bonded to a human will to house her clutch has a much better chance of successfully raising eggs.

Firelizards have little to no effect on humans they are not bonded too when they rise, and the effect on their bonded is minimal. Many finding it a nuisance more than anything else.

A female firelizard can clutch offspring of any colour, but it's rare indeed for a green to bear a bronze let alone a gold.

Growth and development

Clutches are usually between half a dozen to a dozen eggs depending on a range of factors. Younger firelizards clutch better, and gold firelizards often clutch larger than greens. Firelizard eggs are all roughly oval in shape and approximately one inch from tip to tip. Eggs only vary in size a quarter of an inch either way, so it is a skill to be able to guess the colour of the firelizard in size.

The size range in firelizards is significantly smaller than any other dragonkin. As such the growth difference between the colours is negligible, as all firelizards have attained their full size before they reach adulthood. Usually they will be slender until around four months, at which point they will begin to steadily grow muscle. It quickly becomes difficult to tell young firelizards apart from adults.
