HI!!! It's my first time back to gaiaonline in years, and i forgot i was still apart of this guild!!

As we get older, obviously we all learn more about ourselves and our identities change constantly. Over the years I'd accepted myself as a bi woman, but more recently - the past few years or so - have been somewhat of a transition in identity for me. I identify as a feminine nonbinary person now, and prefer the term lesbian or sapphic.

I've been thinking about it a lot as of late, and talking to more and more people about it, but I always find there's so much conflict around what the term "lesbian" truly means. I've known people who use it strictly for love among AFAB (assigned female at birth) people and can be very trans-exclusionary; i've known people who on the contrary, use it to mean loving feminine peoples of all types, whether they are trans, identify as NB, etc.; and I've heard everything in between.

There's a whole lot of gatekeeping in the LGBTQ+ community and though i do feel comfortable labeling myself a lesbian, I've had other queer women in the community tell me that since my partner is a feminine-nonbinary assigned male at birth person, that I have no right to the term.

I just wanted to know all of your thoughts on all of this. I've been using the term "sapphic" more, but using the term "lesbian" has felt so right for me.

Hey there! smile

I think this is a really interesting question, and one that probably many people will have different thoughts on. And ohhhh boy you are so on the nose with the gatekeeping and trans-exclusionary crap.

Exclusions of trans, non-binary, and genderqueer identities is a frustratingly ongoing problem (and if you're in the US, you may have heard recent news of how it may soon become an even larger systemic issue). One of the saddest things to me in our community is how much we discriminate against and thrust rigid labels upon each other - we already have cis/hetero people doing that for us; why are we doing it to each other?

Sorry, I'm rambling a bit because this actually really frustrates me. Basically, I personally am not here at all for the TERF perspectives, and I honestly think you have the right to identify however you feel is most appropriate - be it lesbian, sapphic, or anything else. To me, being a part of the LGBTQ+ community means we no longer need to adhere to the stringent traditional beliefs of what gender is and the roles it must entail - because we freakin' reconceptualized that horsepoop beyond the cis/het narrative! You absolutely, absolutely have a right to the terms you feel describe you and your partner best. You do you!

Hi!!! Fellow nb lesbian who just joined this guild and is new to gaia!!!
GNC women have always been a big part of the LGBTQ community. To ignore their impact on queer history and culture is transphobic and bigoted xx

I wouldn't say I'm a TERF, but I am virtually entirely attracted to "v****a-owners". The terminology is just gross for me because women are more than their vaginas. IASUDFHLAFLUAEF
