Sampson can best be described as a storm cloud manifested in human form—with a seemingly permanent scowl and curt manner of speech, he doesn't come off as a personable ghoul. Living around 200 years in the post-war wasteland doesn't exactly make a person soft and friendly, and Sampson is an example of that. His years have lead him to become callous and solitary, favoring to keep at a distance from people, both physically and emotionally. Though, this is more of a defense tactic than personal preference, as Sampson, just beneath his hardened surface, enjoys the company of others. From time-to-time, he may let his guard down and open up often as a result of loneliness.
Pre-war, Sampson could have been described as romantic and excitable. He was a relatively optimistic person who played by the rules and seldom stepped out of line. He was mild-mannered and kept to himself, though was by no means a loner. This, however, changed come 2077 when the world fell into nuclear disrepair. He became known as somewhat of a bleeding heart, with his previous composure beginning to crack, revealing a vulnerable side that yearned for the safety and preservation of others. However, this phase only lasted so long, eventually callousing over and hardening him into a more stoic, detached person. In time, the harshness of the wasteland shaped Sampson into the gruff, jaded old ghoul he is today.
• Began in-house IT work at the National Guard Training Grounds at 28.
Pre-war, Sampson worked as a computer and electronics repairman and had recently begun in-house work at the National Guard Training Grounds in Boston, Massachusetts. After the devastation of the Great War, he stuck with the other survivors within the National Guard. With the remains of their base, they sheltered others and provided a means of protection for them for approximately 3 years, until operations began to gradually fall apart as the wasteland worsened. Not only were more and more survivors coming in with “radiation sickness,” followed by aggressive behavior, operations in general gradually fell through as disorder took over. In an attempt to evade the increasing chaos, Sampson and one of the soldiers, Carlisle, left in order to seek safer shelter, or risk being killed there. However, they soon found themselves beginning to show symptoms of "zombifying" as they came to know it. From there, the two stuck together and they proceeded into the wasteland as their bodies began to decay. Sampson and Carlisle took up various odd jobs, primarily mercenary work for Carlisle and repair for Sampson, though their ghoulish appearances often put them at a disadvantage with people, with their striking resemblance to a similar breed of monster now plaguing the wastes.
The partnership between the two eventually took a turn for the worst when Carlisle began to behave erratically. The once stoic and collected man gradually began lashing out, taking on a vicious persona. He would rasp and growl at people who passed them by while gnashing his teeth, and Sampson began to feel more like his handler than companion. It got to a point where Carlisle didn’t appear to recognize Sampson anymore, with all the humanity gone from his distant, glassy eyes. It took Sampson a few months of leading his feral friend around on a leash to muster up the courage to finally put a bullet in his head. Sampson then began to wonder how much longer he had before he became like Carlisle.
Sampson then took to the wastelands alone, carrying out the same line of work he had before. However, he took any opportunity he could to find a place to stay for extended periods of time, though many of the forming settlements didn’t want a ghoul on the premise. Sampson didn’t debate their protesting, as he too saw himself as potentially dangerous based on his previous experiences with ghouls and his lack of understanding.
Around 2260, Sampson settled in Diamond City and took up work as a repair technician. For once, he felt the closest to normal he had in a long time. He even ended up in a relationship with a human woman, though broke up with her after she was rumored to have a ghoul fetish. Sometime after, the ghoul ban was set in Diamond City and Sampson was forced to leave.
The time in-between then and 2298 was something of a blur to Sampson—he remembered wandering and squatting in whatever safe haven would take him. To someone over 200 years old, 16 years didn't feel like too long of a time. Eventually, he found himself in Pennsylvania and crossing the ruins of Philadelphia. There, his attention was drawn to a well-kept settlement that called itself Philly. With his knowledge of pre-war tech and willingness to help repair various electronic amenities, he was allowed citizenship within the settlement.

Hurt - Johnny Cash What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here
Deadwing - Porcupine Tree And from the yellow windows of the last train A spectre from the next life breathes his fog on the pane I look with you into the speeding black rain Afraid to touch someone, afraid to ask her for her name
Shallow - Porcupine Tree I live to function On my own is all I know No friends to mention No distraction, nowhere to go
Blow Up the Outside World - Soundgarden Nothing seem to kill me no matter how hard I try Nothing is closing my eyes Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight And nothing seems to break me No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all Not one for giving up though not invincible I know
Someone tried to tell me something Don't let the world bring you down Nothing will do me in before I do myself So save it for your own and the ones you can help
Searching With My Good Eye Closed - Soundgarden Looking to the sky and down Searching for a ground With my good eye closed Stop you're trying to bruise my mind I can do it on my own Stop you're trying to kill my time It's been my death since I was born I don't remember half the time If I'm hiding or I'm lost But I'm on my way
ROMANCE SONG! Probably more from another's perspective cause Sammy's all guarded like that Cold Cold Heart - Norah Jones cover cause I haven't heard the original lmao A memory from your lonesome past Keeps us so far apart Why can't I free your doubtful mind And melt your cold cold heart
There was a time when I believed That you belonged to me But now I know your heart is shackled To a memory
The more I learn to care for you The more we drift apart Why can't I free your doubtful mind And melt your cold cold heart

Idea s**t for Bianca: Once upon a time in a brainstorming session I was like, "damn, Sampson's a tough dude. How can I make him cry?"
And the only thing I could come up with had to do with his allegedly dead wife Bianca. I'd assume that someone who's lived over 200 years in a hellscape and had his face fall off has probably seen enough s**t to be unfazed by most things. But throwin his pre-war wife into the mix might be something on a whole new level of ******** for him.
But I'mma only do this under a certain condition. And prolly only once.
Backstory s**t: Bianca had a shitty home life growing up. She really only had her mother, who was a hoe and was s**t at being a mom. She never knew who her father was and probably neither did her mother. As far as Bianca knew, she was a white girl, but had certain features that some took as Asian, leading to some racial persecution in the midst of the war. As a result of her upbringing, Bianca became a guarded and solitary young woman, as opposed to her hubster Sampson, who was social and optimistic. They completed each other in a way and Sampson's family warmly welcomed her in. Her and Sampson had a sort of boujee power couple thing going on.
Bi could be tough and assertive when she wanted to be, though usually kept to herself. Though she appeared small and harmless, she wouldn't hesitate to bite someone's head off if she felt it was necessary. Likewise, she could get defensive for Sampson, who was prone to being submissive and walked on.
She was a singer and pianist and often traveled for gigs.
While Sammy was away doing military training or whatever, Bianca got signed up for a vault that, like Vault 111, practiced cryogenics. By default, it's gonna be in New Jersey.
Over 200 years later, she is released and saved from a band of super mutants looking to take the uncontaminated humans. A masked man, who turns out to be a ghoul or "holyshitazombie", offers to help her adjust. She's disgusted by his smell and appearance, but he seems genuine enough.
The whole wife being alive and possibly another victim to the wastes thing starts getting to Sampson, who wants to become super protective of her, but at the same time knows that's weird since she doesn't know who he is. Plus, he doesn't really want her to know.
But she eventually finds out.
Sampson wants to go separate ways, since he knows having her around and possibly having to see her die would ******** him up. Likewise, having such a big piece of the past he obsessed over literally right in front of him only served as a reminder of how far gone that really was. He still loved her, but knew it couldn't be, and even if it could, it wouldn't be the same.
Bianca wasn't sure what to do. She seemed more inclined to make it work, but was mostly just going off the fact that she still wanted him to be in her life in some form, regardless if they remained a couple or just friends. Though honestly, was super grossed out by Sampson now, but didn't want to straight up say, "you're hideous, stop being my husband!" Cause he's really the only person she had, then and now.
So they remain friends.
And then Bianca gets turned into a super mutant.
The end.

Emotion things
Sampson sees himself as a worthless coward.
If someone were to ask him, "gee, Sampson, a feller whose lasted this long in the wasteland must sure be strong," he'd respond with something about surviving that long was likely a result of a combination of luck, hiding, and taking a lot of easy ways out. He wasn't putting himself in danger hardly ever and mostly just meandered around looking for safe places to stay, and getting outta dodge when s**t went bad. He was never particularly selfless, but he supposed not selfish either, as he made himself out to be the sort of person you didn't bother for big stuff. He wasn't the sort who'd risk his life for another, but it's not like that was something often expected.
Alsooo During the beginning of the apocalypse, Sampson and Carlisle made a suicide pact of sorts. Since ghouls weren't understood at the time, most, especially Sampson and Carlisle, were convinced it was just zombie s**t like in the movies. So, with Sampson showing signs of ghouling first, and Carlisle shortly after, the two made a deal that whoever was still mostly there would kill the other after they started getting violent, and then them self after.
Carlisle was the first to go feral and Sampson put off killing him for longer than he should, taking to keep him on a leash instead since he was too scared to do it since he still saw him as his friend. After some time and that feeling began to pass, Sampson saw less and less of his friend in the creature as it became more and more unrecognizable. Though, it was still technically him, so even after Sampson decided to finally kill him, it was more painful than he thought it would be, even though it felt like Carlisle had died a while ago. It kinda officiated it, like the last little shred of his friend was gone for good now and he was truly alone. Now, it was Sampson's turn. But he couldn't bring himself to do it. Even 200 years later, he was still too afraid to keep his end of the deal. He thinks he shouldn't have lived as long as he had, believing he should have died with Carlisle that day, like they promised each other. Even after so long, Sampson still thinks it's a matter of time before he ends up the same as Carlisle and that it was selfish and cowardly of him to keep going on, despite the potential threat he posed to others, which was one of the reasons he keeps himself at bay. He doesn't want to put that burden on another to possibly have to kill him if he goes feral because he knows what that's like and it ******** him up real bad.
Part of Sampson's beef with other ghouls stems from this. With ferals, he is reminded of Carlisle and despite becoming a mindless husk, was once an individual with an entire life. Sampson acknowledges this whenever he sees ferals, that each had once been a person. He gets locked into the time when he had to make the choice to put his friend down, despite what he meant to him just months before. He's making that decision again, and again, whenever he's faced with killing ferals. Likewise, he thinks that one day, he could be like them, so not only does he see Carlisle, but himself as well. Like, a glimpse into a sad, shitty future. He prefers to avoid ferals because of this, despite being little physical threat to him, it's emotionally draining and puts him into a bad place.
With non-ferals, it's kinda the same s**t, since they share a similar look. But since they're still intelligent and have their wits, it's not as bad to be around them for Sampson, but he gets a little uncomfortable due to the general ghoul-related trauma. He might be thinking about how they too could go feral and if he becomes close with them, he'll have to put them down too when the times comes, or they to him.
With his aversion to mirrors, it's kinda a combination of the above, just generally getting down on himself for being gross looking, and not wanting to recognize himself as what he sees, even though he doesn't even remember how he looked before becoming a ghoul anymore. And by this point, he just finds his reflection kinda shocking cause he doesn't really have an accurate mental image of himself since he never looks into mirrors. It's like, he knows it's him, but at the same time, he doesn't immediately recognize his own reflection and it's just a really weird, surreal feeling he'd rather not deal with.
