Lady Luck had to be laughing at him. It was the only thing he could think of. Luck is a fickle mistress though and it looked like she had moved on to another to give her blessing. How else could Edmund explain how tonight went all the hell? Perhaps he should have started gambling, given her something else to do other than help him in his nightly endeavors. Or maybe it was just his time to run out. He didn't know. All Edmund hoped was that she would return soon and help him out of this mess.
This annoying, stubborn mess. The guy had gone to the party to nab a fabulous necklace for his collection, for this gentleman thief was no Robin Hood. What he stole he kept in his life of luxury. Edmund didn't even know the people he stole from. But ritzy parties were the perfect target for him. It had started so simple, so much like every other heist. Slipped in, mingled and pretended he belonged there. Make his way up to where the private rooms are. Nab the item and go.
But no. Not this time. This time he had to take something with the necklace. Something he didn't even want. A chatty, self-righteous, woman who would not shut up about returning the necklace. Edmund didn't care if this female was a friend of the one he stole from. No necklace was worth harassing him over. No doubt the girl would buy another necklace like it with the insurance money from the theft.
Edmund rubbed his temple to try to get rid of the growing headache as he drove away. He needed some way to get rid of this woman.
