The Harcroft Family Chronicler's Notes: Harcrofts are a lower-middle class Wizarding family hailing from the West Midlands of Central England, and whose nominal family seat is located in the city of Birmingham. Though considered to be a Pureblood family, the Harcrofts are looked down upon by other families of such status, as their fortunes have not improved over the last decades, and some members of the family have either intermarried with families of lesser purity or foreigners of 'questionable lineage'. It also hasn't helped that several family members were believed to be supporters of the Dark Lord during the First and Second Wizarding Wars. In the family's defense, their involvement and their allegiances during the later event were invoked under duress, and to spare their children attending Hogwarts at the time possible retaliation by Lord Voldemort's agents. Recently, Madam Harcroft was revealed to have committed a series of crimes, including kidnapping and conspiracy to commit murder, as part of her efforts to clean up her son's 'poor life choices'. As she is currently in prison, it is unknown whom is currently acting as head of the family or controlling the family fortune. Known Family Members as of 2067 Madam Octavia Harcroft: (b. 1987?): Matriarch of the Harcroft Family, mother of Nigel Harcroft. She has been the guiding hand of the extended Harcroft Family for many years, and is suspected of using her facility with certain Memory Charms to influence members of her family to do things as she wishes. Recently, she was caught having Obliviated her son into forgetting the existence of his wife and children, whom were seen as invaders, and arranging for the attempted assassination of Reyna and Faina Patrovna, as well as the abduction of Katya Patrovna. During the early part of 2043, she was tried and convicted for her crimes, and sentenced to a long prison stay in Azkaban. (NPC) 'Jeeves': (b. Unknown) 'Jeeves' is a House Elf whom serves the Harcroft Family. The name is a derisive moniker he was tagged with by Faina Patrovna when she figured out he didn't like her, and his real name has yet to be revealed. He is known to be utterly loyal to Madam Harcroft, and eluded capture when the house was raided in Christmas of 2042, and is thought to have a rather surly attitude (although this was attributed by Katya Patrovna whom had been left in his care when she was abducted, so ...). Current whereabouts are unknown. (NPC) Nigel Harcroft: (b. 2005) Son of Theoden and Octavia Harcroft, husband of Reyna Patrovna-Harcroft, father of Faina and Katya Patrovna-Harcroft. Alumnus of Hogwarts of the Class of 2022, former Hufflepuff. Nigel married Reyna Patrovna shortly after his graduation. His involvement with Reyna caused a considerable rift in the family, as she was seen as a foreign invader and a grifter, and their subsequent marriage was viewed with great disapproval. The family only nominally accepted the foreign-born Reyna after it was revealed she was pregnant, and so Nigel was seen to be doing ' the honourable thing' and marrying the girl to provide her a husband and father to their child. Was involved in an incident on October 31st, 2036, resulting in his disappearance. It was since determined Nigel was Obliviated by his mother to forget the existence of his wife and children, and he has since married another woman, Amanda, and has two children by her. (NPC) Amanda Harcroft: (b. 2007?) Daughter of a Pureblooded Wizard family more to Madam Harcroft's liking, her marriage was arranged by the parties involved, and she is the mother of Nigel's two other children, Freddie and Katie. Since the revelation that she is Nigel's second wife, her legal situation has become much more interesting, to say the least, as lawyers are wrangling over the validity of her marriage, and whether her children have any claim to the Harcroft estate. (NPC) Frederick 'Freddie' Harcroft: (b. 2037?) Elder son of Nigel and Amanda, older brother of Katherine, half-brother of Faina and Katya Patrovna. (NPC) Katherine 'Katie' Harcroft: (b. 2039?) Younger daughter of Nigel and Amanda, younger sister of Frederick, half-sister of Faina and Katya Patrovna. (NPC) Reyna Patrovna (ne: Parovna-Harcroft): (b. 2005) Daughter of Sophie and Andrei Patrovna of St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, alumnus of Durmstrang, and member of the Punainen House, Class of 2022. Shortly after graduating from the Durmstrang Academy, Reyna emigrated to England, as she had few appealing job prospects in St. Petersburg. She met Nigel Harcroft shortly after settling down in London, and they soon fell in love. She was only grudgingly allowed into the family when it was revealed she was with child. Unfortunately when the family was presented with a child with white hair and red eyes, they saw this as ' proof' of Reyna's tainted and corrupted bloodline. After an incident on October 31st, 2036, Reyna was left in a non-functional condition with long periods of coma and brief periods of lucidity, and has become a long-term patient at St. Mungo's. In June of 2038, Reyna was deemed cured by the staff at St. Mungo's, and has since been discharged from the hospital. Currently, she lives in the household set up by her nephew (?), Sergei Patrovna, in Greater London, since her old home was destroyed in the incident. To date, she has no memory of what happened to her on October 31st, 2036, nor what happened to her husband. During the period of 2039, Reyna went through the process of getting her own house in order, as it were, and reclaimed control of her situation. At that point, her husband was missing and presumed deceased, she took back her maiden name, and changed the last names of her children accordingly. Since this time, she has learned the truth what happened, nearly at the cost of her own life and that of her older daughter. With the discovery of the truth, legal issues are being addressed, as it is unknown whether her marriage to Nigel is legally concluded, and whether she and her children will have access to the Harcroft fortune. As of 2045, these legal matters have yet to be resolved. (NPC) Faina Patrovna (ne: Patrovna-Harcroft): (b. 2026) First-born daughter of Nigel and Reyna, older sister of Katya. Full character details listed in the file below this one. Kitty Quinlan (ne: Katya Patrovna, ne: Patrovna-Harcroft): (b. 2029) Second-born child of Nigel and Reyna, younger sister of Faina, wife of Cian Quinlan, mother of Dymitri Quinlan. Full character details listed in file below this one. Cian Quinlan: (b;2029) Son of Rodrick and Heather, brother of Aeryn, Caelan, and Ailbhe, Husband of Kitty Quinlan, father of Dymitri. Player Character, played by CatWaffles. Dymitri Quinlan: (b: 2052) First-born son of Cian and Kitty Quinlan. Full character details listed in file below. Aleksandr Quinlan: (b. 2054) Second-born son of Cian and Kitty Quinlan (NPC). Alenka Quinlan: (b. 205 cool First-born daughter of Cian and Kitty Quinlan (NPC). The Patrovna family Chronicler' s Notes: The Patrovna Family is primarily of Russian stock, and can trace their lineage down through the time prior to the czars. While the family has a long lineage and has produced numerous witches and wizards down through the centuries, it cannot be said they are particularly pureblooded, as half-bloods and even Muggles have married into the Patrovna Family; a situation which has caused for them continual issues when dealing with the scions of other more noble families. Their acceptance of non-Wizarding folk into their family has been a source of issue, as the family has skated uncomfortably close to violating the Secrecy Act on several occasions, most notably during the October Revolution of 1917, when an Anya Patrovna became involved with a minor member of the Court of Czar Nicholas-II, and had to be rescued when the royal family was being murdered by the Bolsheviks. While the family has centered principally in the city of St. Peterburg, the Patrovnas have also settled in the cities of Archangel and Moscow. Known Family Members as of 2067 Andrei "Papa" Patrovna: (b.?) Father of Reyna and Gregor (NPC) Sophie "Baba" Patrovna: (b.?) Mother of Reyna and Gregor, sister of Shaska (NPC) Shaska Patrovna: (b.?) Mother of Sergei, sister of Sophie (NPC) Sergei Patrovna: (b. 2003) Son of Shaska, Sergei has recently emigrated to England to act as the legal guardian for his younger cousins, Faina and Katya, with the understanding he was to remain in this capacity until they either reach legal age of adulthood or his cousin Reyna regains the ability to act in her former capacity or her husband returns home. As of 2045, he has continued to live in Surrey, even though Faina has reached majority, and Reyna has been cured of her affliction. The girls refer to him as ' Papa Sergei', a title which gives him an enormous amount of gratification, as he has no children of his own otherwise. Kasamir Patrovna: (b: 2049) Son of Piotr Morozov and Merriam Patrovna (deceased), brother of Lana (deceased), great-grandson of Andrei and Sophie. Adopted by Faina Patrovna. Member of the branch of the Patrovna family living in the area around Arkhangelsk, Russian Federation. Character details listed in file below. The Stepanovich-Patrovna Family Chronicler's Notes: The Stepanovich family is a cadet branch of the extended Patrovna clan based out of St. Petersburg, having been brought in because of a series of marriages over the course of several generations, with the last taking place during the twilight years of Tsarist rule in Russia. Known Family Members Natalya 'Talya' Stepanovich-Patrovna: Second daughter of Artemyi and Evelyna. Born May 13, 2054. Character details listed in the file below. Current Employment: Auror- Senior Grade. Chief of the Auror Office in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation
Dream Job: An Auror, so done, though now the dream has become making it to retirement with a whole skin and sound mind. Hope I'm not asking for too much.
Personality:
■ Secretive: Faina doesn’t like giving up any kind of personal information to anyone, especially to those she doesn’t know or trust, not even to venture an opinion or express a like or dislike. Better to stay silent, and let others assume what they will, than open one's mouth and erase all doubts. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy getting her to trust anyone, not early on, and she never accepts anyone at face value. ■ Loyal: Once one gets past her guard, she holds her friendships as sacrosanct. Her word, once given will not be broken; and a trust invoked will not be given up short of a Cruciatus or an Imperious. Faina would willingly die to protect her family and has nearly done so on several occasion. ■ Cynical: Faina would argue her attitude is one of typical Russian pessimism and practicality, but she is quite prepared to believe the worse of anyone or any given situation and is given to comment with a sharp tongue as a result. It is better to prepare for a bad outcome and be glad if it turns out better than hope for the best and get dumped on instead. As it is, Faina finds it hard to hang onto any sort of hope that things will get better for her. ■ Perceptive: Little gets past Faina’s notice when she’s paying attention to what’s going on around her. Small clues will be seen, and the feelings of others she will file away for future reference. Her attention to detail has aided her in her studies and her career. ■ Hardworking: Nothing comes without a price, this Faina understands well, and shortcuts will get one burned in the end. While she is actually rather book-smart, and could get away with sluffing off, Faina works hard at her schoolwork, as she knows it’s the only way she’ll ever get anywhere in her life. ■ Brave: Faina has learned to face difficulties with a façade of stolid indifference to pain and hardship. If nothing else, she has her little sister she needs to be strong for. Life is tough, be equal to it or drown, is her attitude.
Likes:
■ Favourite Food: Soup and sandwiches ■ Her collection of books ■ Nice clothes ■ Favourite class: History of Magic ■ Learning new spells
Dislikes:
■ Hates broccoli and Brussel sprouts; they’re clearly the products of sick minds. ■ Girl drama ■ Computers, doesn’t trust them ■ Being teased about her appearance ■ Loud groups
Hobbies: ■ Reading, enjoys the classics of Wizarding and Muggle literature ■ Board games, Wizard Chess in particular ■ Drawing (keeps a sketchbook close at hand)
Strengths: ■ Her intelligence and ability to cope ■ Her magic
Weaknesses:
■ Difficulty trusting anyone, especially early on. ■ Her reduced sense of empathy toward others. While she may be aware of the feelings of others around her, she may not bother to take such in consideration. Things are what they are, there’s little point in crying about it.
Fears:
■ That something awful will happen to her mother or her sister ■ Being truly alone in the world
Patronus: A large Russian fire-bird Happy Memory to Summon Patronus: The last Christmas morning her family was all together.
Languages:
■ English (Native) - Full fluency ■ Russian (Always spoken in the house) - Full fluency ■ French (Learned in school) - Full fluency ■ German (read and write only) ■
History:
Childhood: Faina is the elder daughter of Reyna Patrovna, whom emigrated from the Russian Federation to England after graduating from the Durmstrang Academy, in hopes of finding a better life for herself. Shortly after arriving in England, and settling into Wizarding society here, Reyna met and fell in love with Nigel Harcroft, a scion of a relatively lower middle-class Pureblood family, whom was a recent graduate from Hogwarts. The family was not particularly pleased with having this foreign-born witch insinuating herself into their circle, and only grudgingly allowed her into the family after she and Nigel married when they learned she was pregnant. Unfortunately for them, Faina was the result of the mingling of their blood.
With her dusky skin tone, white hair and blood-red eyes, Faina looked nothing like her parents, and was viewed as physical proof of the family’s suspicions that Reyna was actually of mixed blood, and thus had made a ‘blood traitor’ of Nigel, as she’d clearly bewitched him into marrying her to escape a bad situation back in St. Petersburg. As a result, little Faina had little contact with her magical extended family, whom saw her as a blight upon the family's good name. As she got older, her appearance was the cause of many of the teasing incidents she weathered from the other kids at school, and little Katya would get bullied for being her sister. Faina quickly learned how to fight, soon holding her own against the boys as as much as she would with the girls, not caring if her opponent was bigger, tougher or stronger. Anyone whom picked on her little sister soon learned they'd have to face Faina.
As Faina got older, she also started experiencing minor magical incidents. Motes of light would swirl around her on occasion; objects would fly toward her, such as a favourite toy. Her nascent magical abilities caused her issues at school; one day after being ridiculed by one of the mean girls, the girl got a door slammed in her face hard enough to cause a trip to the nurse’s office. A boy whom called her ‘vampire’ got depantsed in the halls. But none of this compared with the day the Ministry official arrived at the school to collect her and her baby sister.
The matter has never been satisfactorily resolved, and there are many unanswered questions. What Faina and Katya were told was that something happened to their father, and nobody knew what or where he went afterward. Their mother was found at the burned out ruin of their home, covered in blood and soot, and in a coma. Reyna was placed in a long-term care wing of St. Mungo's, as there was really nowhere else to put her, and no family to handle her care. The Harcrofts were of a mind the house was attacked by 'Russian hit-wizards' over some sordid affair Reyna was somehow involved in, and for this reason refused to accept Faina and her sister into their care, lest they become targets of revenge as well.
With their father missing and his fate unknown, their mother in no condition to care for them, and no family member willing to step forward to help, Faina and Katya ended up in the rather byzantine foster care system. They were placed in a foster home over the holidays, and would have stayed longer, unfortunately Faina had another one of her magical accidents. After an incident where she inadvertently set her foster mother on fire, requiring a hospital trip and a visit by the Obliviators, the two kids were at loose ends, and would have been sent somewhere else had Faina not managed to get a message to her mother's family, whom lived in St. Petersburg in the Russian Federation. The family arranged for one of her cousins, Sergei Patrovna to emigrate to England, and take over guardianship of Faina and Katya until either or both of them turned seventeen, Reyna recovered from whatever was done to her, or their father reappeared and reclaimed his role as their parent. Recently, however, Faina received her letter from Hogwarts, and that’s when things really started to get interesting…
School Years:
The Sorting Hat: The Sorting Hat: The Professor set the hat down carefully on the student's head. For a moment the hat was silent before speaking....
Ah, my dear, there's a place for everyone Yours is not that hard to find You could go many places, but I think you'll be best off in Slytherin!
First Year: Wasn't expecting to get Sorted into Slytherin, that's for sure. My first thought was Ravenclaw, or maybe Gryffindor, so I could be with Rhett, but, no the Hat had other ideas. The Hat has a Russian sense of humour. Also wasn't expecting the prefects to threaten detentions and feeding students to a python for stepping out of line, or a Head of House whom was about as sane as Rasputin himself either, but one takes the good with the bad, I suppose. Still, I was determined to find my feet in this place. Discovered the kitchens early on, which is good, as its a bloody long walk from the dorms to the Great Hall and then to Charms class in the morning. Tried to sign on with the Dueling Club, but was told while I could watch, participation was out of the question. I did, however, pick up a few pointers which helped me in my classes. I also joined the Art Club, and met a few students there whom could be friends.
While I've been at school, I've been worried about my younger sister, since I'm not there to protect her from the bullies at the school I used to attend. She's become increasingly withdrawn, and barely speaks anything other than Russian, which won't help her fitting in. Cousin Sergei promised us we might be going to St. Petersburg over the summer, so we can visit our family there, as neither Katya nor I have met any of our cousins.
Second Year: We actually visited my mother's family in St. Petersburg, and Katya and I had the chance to get to meet our cousins, some of whom we only knew from the photo album we salvaged from the house fire. Considering how we were seen as pariahs by our father's family, it was nice to be accepted as Patrovnas without reservations. Our grandmother spoke of arranging to drop the Harcroft from our names, but I don't know if anything will come of this. Our mother, if she ever becomes functional again, will be the one whom will make that determination.
Katya and I went shopping in Diagon Alley with Rhett and Ferdie, and I was amazed by how much they'd changed over the summer, it was almost like they were entirely different people, except for their voices. When I took the train back to school, I rode up with a new friend, Lucien Markov, whom talked about playing a 'keytar'.
School went well enough this year, at least I wasn't having too many issues with the other students or my teachers. I was able to join the Dueling Club this time, so that was cool, and I took Advanced Flying- not to play to Quidditch, but to get the chance to fly a broomstick, since my cousin won't buy one for me. During Art Club, Lizzie's gospodar for a brother, Peter, caused such a fuss, he caused Dris to get really mad at him, and I was prepared to fight the older boy to stick up for my friend and for our captain.
Upon returning to London, Katya and I went to see mother in the hospital, and got a real surprise. I'd been expecting to be there when she died, but that's not what happened...
Third Year: Mother finally awakened from whatever curse or coma she was put in after ... the incident. Would have been nice if Father showed up so we could be a family again, but he never appeared. No surprise there, I wasn't expecting him anyway. Mother is so frail and thin, though, I'm afraid she might break something if she fell down. While I'm happy she okay enough to be part of our lives again in a meaningful fashion, I'm not really sure how else to process it all. Katya's happy, so that's good enough for me.
Speaking of Katya, she's finally showing signs of being a witch, for which I am glad for her, as it gave us all the reason to just home-school her, away from all the bullies whom cause her to have accidents like I used to have. Grandmother was delighted to see her make a cuchina doll float in the air, when we visited St. Petersburg over the summer. It was after a long family discussion that mother decided it was time to put our 'house' in order, starting by severing our connection with the Harcrofts. With Father gone, and his family wanting nothing to do with us, there was no reason to keep using their surname.
Back at school, I had a bunch of new classes to get accustomed to attending, including Ghost and Ghoul Studies, which I found interesting. It was also cool when Lucien showed up for Dueling Club. He called me 'Fai', which I kinda like, and he's pretty cute too.
By the time I got back home, the lawyers finished with their quibbles, and I was rid of the Harcroft name.
Fourth Year: This year was kind of different for me in that this would be the first time my sister would be coming to school with me. It was pretty cool getting to be the one to help her pick out her books in Diagon Alley, although I was hanging out with Rhett and Ferdie while Lucien's aunt helped Katya find a wand. My biggest concern was how well she would settle in at Hogwarts, and would I need to act as her guardian there as I had at our old school. It was also hard when we said our good-byes on the platform, and Mother made me promise to look out for my sister, even as I pointed out to her I have always done just that.
We rode up to Hogwarts with Rhett and Ferdie, though more than anything I wanted to be with Lucien, as I've become increasing aware of the feelings which I've developed for him. During the Sorting ceremony, I was pleased to see Katya get placed into Hufflepuff, as I knew she would be comfortable there, way more than she might of in Slytherin. As time has gone on, I've found I rather like Slytherin despite my original misgivings, as the competitiveness has caused me to push myself that much harder.
During the year, I finally asked Lucien out, as in to be a couple, with help from Katya (actually she pushed me into doing it), and Kimberly asked me to take over the Dueling Club after she graduates from school. Katya and I also went home to spend Christmas with Mother and Cousin Sergei, which made both of us feel better about our situation. It was during this time I hatched my plan to make a trip to Coventry, to see what was left of our home, and recover whatever things of ours I could, as Mother mentioned how she missed having her jewelry box and our family album, which had her wedding pictures.
What I didn't know was what would happen once I started my journey...
Fifth Year: My little day-trip to Coventry was not without its complications. Cousin Sergei insisted I take Kitten with me while I 'out looking for a birthday present for Mother', but then I think he was hoping to derail a clandestine romantic rendezvous. While our old house wasn't as badly damaged as I thought it might be, it still hurt to see what the fire did. We managed to recover a few things from our house, but the jewelry box still was missing. Unfortunately, this meant taking a trip to see Grandma Harcroft. Visiting our father's family didn't go well, but it did result in our learning our father was actually still alive.
We visited a park that we used to go to when we were little, and we spotted our father there, accompanied by two kids we soon learned were our half-siblings. When we confronted him, he claimed not even know who we were. After he left with our replacement siblings, I decided we would try again, by visiting our father at his current family home, offering proof of our claims and forcing the issue. We never made it there, as we were ambushed by a couple men on broomsticks whom shot spells at us and tried grabbing us. We managed to get away, though not without Katya getting a broken ankle, and my shoulder was broken.
Our trip to Coventry got us a trip to St. Mungo's for our injuries, quizzed by the Aurors, and grounded for the rest of the summer, however, we also got some precious family heirlooms home, and learned a few things. It was right after this I got the owl with the letter telling me I made prefect. Yeah, Mother got a good laugh out of that.
I was so glad to see Lucien again when we got back to school, he's the one who keeps me on an even-keel. Having his support is what is helping me stay sane, as I juggle classes and my prefect duties and OWL prep, oh, and running the Dueling Club. Yeah, I'm running the Dueling Club, and I've been having fun doing it, but there's a lot of responsibility that goes along with being a Captain. Being a prefect has a lot of responsibilities too, but I like the job, its cool having students look to me for guidance and support, and having bubble baths in the prefect's bathroom is a nice benefit.
The biggest event of the year was a massive food-fight in the Great Hall, which I somehow missed being in the middle of. At the end of the term I took my exams, and out of thirteen OWLs taken, I got seven 'Outstandings' and six 'Exceeds Expectations' for all my hard work.
Sixth Year: After doing so well on my OWLs, expectations were high for the rest of my academic career. My plan to be an Auror after leaving Hogwarts is still on track, but it means I have to do well in all my classes, and then post high scores on my NEWTs next term. My sister conned me into joining the Cooking Club which formed up this term; Katya originally wanted to start the club, but one of her Housemates beat her to the punch, so she's decided to get involved in this one instead.
Over Christmas break I took resolute action to solve the mystery surrounding what happened to Father, and after confronting him with proof of our claims, we found out he'd been Obliviated into forgetting we were a family by Madam Harcroft. The knowledge came at a cost, as the woman sent killers to murder Mother and I and kidnap Kitten. Fighting half a dozen wizards, Mother and I nearly died, and Kitten nearly got Obliviated. On the positive side, Lucien met Mother and Cousin Sergei, and his father found out about him and I (this is based upon a conversation in Chatzy with Julian). Papa and Baba Patrovna also spent Christmas with us, though it was at a hotel as our house needed repairs after the attack.
Seventh Year: After everything which happened last term, including dealing with all the legal matters revolving around my grandmother, I was glad that the only thing I really needed to worry about this go around was preparing for my NEWTs. This last term involved a lot of studying, though I did have time to do other things, like running the Dueling Club, and doing art projects, and going out on dates with my boyfriend. Of course, I'll be leaving school a year before he will, so we will need to figure out how to continue things, but this shouldn't too much of an issue. One of the big things I did was an extra credit project for Art class, which ended up being a large scale mural, depicting the stories Baba Patrovna told me of the wedding day of our great-grandmother.
All things considered, the year seemed to go awfully fast, but I suppose this isn't too surprising given how those NEWT exams loomed in front of me. When it was done, I'd collected six 'Outstandings', five 'Exceeds Expectations', and one 'Acceptable', the latter because I missed one lousy question on my History of Magic exam. While I am happy to have graduated from Hogwarts, I'm also sad to go, as there so many friends I will miss seeing every day, and teachers I know I will miss. I cried when I said good-bye to Professor Hawthorne, and I owe Madam Cohen my life.
All of a sudden, I no longer have school in front of me, and the future is now upon me.
Postgraduation:
I'd like to think that it was possible for a relationship to survive when one is older than the other still at school, but such was not to be. Lucien and I drifted apart, as he was a dreamer, and I knew better than to place my hopes in such things. I looked forward to the dates we had, and the time we spent together, appreciating that today, knowing tomorrow would come as it always did. I always felt ... lighter around him, like he brought out a better more hopeful version of me and in his absence, a light in my life was extinguished. I've tried looking for him over the years, hoping upon hope that perhaps we could rekindle whatever we had, but I've never found so much as a clue as to where he'd gone, and there are times I might have questioned the validity those memories, except I still have the gifts he'd given me as proof of those better days.
I entered into the Auror service not long after graduation, and threw myself into my work, putting in extra hours whenever possible to build my reputation and earn extra money. I always took care to put money aside, building a nest egg for myself while setting aside whatever Galleons I could to give to Mom and Sergei every week, so they would worry less about money, and there was extra so Kitten had money while at school. Mother would stay up late at night, waiting for me to come home, and would worry more the nights when I didn't come home at all. When I realize how much stress I was placing upon her, I moved out of the house, so she wouldn't need to worry as much.
I moved into a place that was barely more than a room with an attached bathroom, a kitchenette, and an external stairway, owned by a little old Russian woman who barely spoke English. She would invite me to have dinner with her and her husband as she knew I worked long hours and never had visitors. Katya thought it was tiny and depressing, and she swore I needed a pet so there was some living being in my life to come home to, but the rent was cheap and my needs were few, and I could still send money to Mother every week.
After living my solitary existence for ten years, in 2054 I got the golden oppourtunity to transfer to the St. Petersburg office, bringing me closer to where I should have been all these years. Here, I was less of an Auror, as the English wizards like to think of us, and more of a Witch Hunter, chasing after Dark Wizards and other hazards of this corner of the Wizarding World. When i walked into the office, I was replacing another Witch Hunter who'd died the week previous in the job. I was soon to learn that dying on the job was an occupational hazard and a frequent occurrence.
As I had in London, I secured lodgings in St. Petersburg that consisted of little more than a walk-up leading to a room. It wasn't a bad little place, it was within walking distance of the office, and there's a cafe I frequent often enough that the daily special was how I kept track of what day of the week it was. I spent the next few years there, rising through the ranks in the office. It was in 2058 when things changed. There was an accident on the rail line between Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg. The train derailed, and came off the track, killing a large number of people in the fiery crash that resulted, including my cousins, Piotr and Merriam, and their daughter Lana, while their son, Kasamir, survived though only by the narrowest margins, and suffering from terrible burns over much of his body.
With Kasamir's family wiped out in the crash, Baba and the elders in the extended family gathered to determine what should be done for Piotr and Merriam's only surviving child. It was my thought that if anyone would gain custody it would be Katya, as she already had a family of her own, and a large enough house that adding an extra kid would be little issue. Nobody was more surprised than I when it was decided I would adopt my cousin and become his guardian (calling me 'mother' was an insult to motherhood), as Baba determined we needed each other.
Reluctantly I found a much larger place for us, as the 'glorified broom closet' (a cousin's description, not mine) I was living in was deemed too small. It was an adjustment as I figured out how to be a guardian, at the same time I was taking over a new role of Station Chief, as my old boss died during a field operation. I'd like to think I've grown into my new roles in life, and I cried after putting Kasamir on the Hogwarts Express, and that first Christmas with him was the first holiday I'd looked forward to since ... well, since before the fire.
During the summer of 2065, during a family reunion, I got involved in the disappearance of my cousin, Natalya, and found out she was abducted by an old friend of Baba's who strayed into practices that turned her into a hag straight out of our stories. The resulting battle nearly killed me, as I breathed in an alchemical concoction caused by the fire that erupted in the cellars of her house. Despite magical healing, I was in a similar position Mother was after the fire, and I was concerned I would be forced to retire. Instead, I stepped away from going out on field missions, leaving that to my old friend and deputy, Pavel.
Recently, I've been trying to steer Kasamir away from being an Auror, as I don't want him leading a life like mine, especially since he plans to marry Hes, and I've visited too many young widows in my career to add another so soon.

■ Shy: I’m not very good about dealing with people I don’t know, or being around large numbers of them. Loud people really put me off, and that’s why bullies think they can take advantage of me. ■ Loyal: Once somebody’s my friend, I stick by them, no matter what. ■ Smart: I’m really good at school, especially math, and I can pick up other languages pretty quickly. ■ Perceptive: I’m also pretty good at figuring out puzzles and spotting things other people might miss. ■ Sensitive: I try really hard to be considerate of other people’s feelings, but that’s because I don’t like being treated poorly too. I’ve been known to cry when my older sister cried, for no other reason than because she was crying. ■ Hardworking: Just because I am smart, though, there’s no excuse to sluff off, and taking shortcuts always seem to cost more than doing it right the first time. I guess some of my sister has rubbed off on me.

History:
Childhood: Katya is the younger daughter of Reyna Patrovna and Nigel Harcroft, and she is the sister of Faina.
As she was growing up, Katya had little contact with the rest of their extended families, as her mother’s folk lived in Russia, which was so far away, and her father’s folk, while not so distant in physical terms may as well as been. In all honesty, she wouldn’t have known her own kin beyond her immediate family if they were walking down the street and she saw them. Though her parents were careful not to say anything on the subject of their familial estrangement, Katya figured out much of it had to do with the way her mom and dad got together in the first place, and her sister’s birth.
Going to school, while Katya loved to read and learn about things and faraway places, making friends and painting, she also got picked on by the bigger kids. Part of it was because she was a small, skinny kid, who didn’t fight back, and much of it because she was Faina’s younger sister. Faina was singled out because of her unusual appearance, and Katya was the ‘freak’s sister’. As a result, she often found herself hiding behind her older sister, as Faina took care of her tormentors. In many ways, Faina became her shield against the rest of the world.
When she was six years old, something terrible happened, and she didn’t know anything happened at all until she and her sister were being collected by the Ministry. A fire had swept through their house, and their mother was now in the hospital, and their father was nowhere to be found. Reyna ended up in the long-term care wing at St. Mungo’s, as there was nowhere else to put her, and nobody seemed willing to help out. Of their father’s family, she and her sister heard nothing, a situation Faina told her was ‘no surprise’ and that they’d ‘better get used to surviving on our own’.
Katya’s little world was torn asunder, and she and older sister ended up in foster care. She really became withdrawn and barely spoke at all, and usually in Russian when she did, which really didn’t help her dealing with bullies at school. Shortly before the holidays, she tried making cookies to cheer her sister up, and got in trouble with the lady taking care of them. The woman got so mad with her; she actually smacked Katya’s hand with a wooden spoon, and did so as Faina appeared to find out what was going on. Seeing her baby sister getting hit, Faina got angry, lost control of her magic, and accidentally set the lady on fire.
What happened afterwards was a bit of a blur for Katya, as the adults started scurrying around and bustling them from one place to another, while her sister went all ‘mother bear’ if anyone got near them. At some point, their mother’s cousin, Sergei arrived to take custody of the two girls. Katya had never met or even heard of him, but it was the warm hug he gave the both of them and his Russian accent which gave the girl hope things would get better for them.
As their situation started getting to what she hoped was a new normal, Katya kept careful track of how long her father was gone, all the while hoping and praying he would return and make things all better again. One of the few things they managed to salvage was a slightly fire-damaged picture of their father, which she kept with her, as she was afraid she’d forget what he looked like. She would visit her mother, talk to her and brush out her hair, even if she couldn’t say anything in response. The new normal also included having her sister going to a new school, Hogwarts, while she was left to fend off her detractors alone.
When she turned ten, a bunch of things happened. She started having magical things happen to her. She could make fireflies appear in her room, and on occasion she had a book fly across the room. It was then, Sergei figured it was best to start homeschooling her, wanting to avoid dealing with Obliviators. Her mother finally awakened from the coma she’d been in, she and her sister were formally adopted by the Patrovnas, and got their last name adjusted accordingly, and shortly after summer started she got her own letter…
School Years:
The Sorting Hat: The Professor set the hat down carefully on the student's head. For a moment the hat was silent before speaking.... Somewhere you'll fit? Why, dearest, that's what I do And you'll fit in quite well in Hufflepuff!
First Year: Wow, where to start? Well, there was the trip to Diagon Alley, and that day was my turn to get ready to go to Hogwarts. I met Vasily, whom was the aunt of Faina's boyf-, I mean, cru-, I mean, friend (yeah, that's it), Lucien Markov, who helped me pick out my wand, and I saw Ferdie and Rhett there too, and we went shopping together. It was really cool the way things worked, because no matter where I might get Sorted there would be somebody there I knew.
The hardest thing was leaving home and saying good-bye to Momma on the platform. After everything, I was so scared I'd never see her again, but she promised she'd be there to get us when we came back for Christmas. Faina promised to look after me, and told Momma if anything to me they'd be digging two graves; not sure what that was all about, but it didn't sound good. Faina can be so gloomy at times. After that, the train ride was fun, and I got to ride in the compartment with Faina and her friends. Seeing the castle for the first time was so incredible, I couldn't believe this was happening until I got inside. The first night there I was Sorted into Hufflepuff, which was a good thing, as I wasn't sure I could handle being in Slytherin with my sister.
My classes went okay, except I know now I really don't like my Herbology teacher (he scares me), and I never want to tryout for Quidditch. It was really cool to join up with the Art Club, and Faina dragged me with her to the Dueling Club. The important thing to me was I was going to a school where I had a place to fit in, and could make friends.
Second Year: Faina and I kinda snuck out and took a trip back to our old hometown. We took a ride on the Knight Bus, and I nearly threw up along the way, and we ended up at our old house. While it was sad seeing what happened to our old home, I was happy to find Momma's recipe box and Papa's jacket, which I wear now. However, we didn't find Momma's jewelry box, which was what Faina was looking for, and we went to see Grandma Harcroft. I've never met her before, and I found out she hated us just because we existed and she and the rest of Papa's family abandoned us after the fire, because they didn't want to subsidize Papa's bad life decisions. We did find out she had the jewelry box, and she turned it over before turning us out into the streets.
We visited a park afterward, and we saw Papa there, and I was so excited I ran over to see him. He looked at me and told me he didn't know who I was, and he had a little boy and a girl with him who were his children. Faina says we've been replaced by them, but I know something else is going on here. Papa would never have abandoned us and left Momma to die in a fire, he just wouldn't. We were going to have another go at finding out what was going on, but we got attacked by these men. Faina protected me, but we both got hurt, and we found out Grandma Harcroft sent these men to hurt us.
When we got home, Momma and Cousin Sergei were so mad at us for what we did, and we got grounded for the rest of the summer. I was so glad when it was time to get back to school, I missed my friends, and my teachers. My classes went okay, and I got through my year without too many issues. At the end of the term, Faina gave me a kitten she'd rescued from her Transfiguration OWL as a gift. She's so tiny and so cute, and now she needs a name. I also need to figure out my electives for next year.
Third Year: This summer wasn't as event-filled like the last one, but we did go back to St. Petersburg. For my birthday, I received an Orthodox cross from Baba Patrovna; its so pretty and I never take it off. While we were there, she also started introducing me around to her friends, and their grandsons. Faina tells me she's testing the waters and seeing if any of them might be interested in me. As in, like, dating and stuff, and while I'm definitely interested in guys, I'm pretty sure I don't want Baba picking out potential husbands for me.
Speaking of dating, when we got back to school, I got asked out by Cian at the Sorting Feast. It was pretty cool, he sent his ferret, Batman, with a note, and, of course I said yes. Of course, I needed to set things up so we could go to Hogsmeade, maybe with Faina and Lucien, but, who cares, I got a boyfriend, and that's pretty nice.
The start of school also meant I had electives, and I started taking Alchemy to help me along with my goal of being a Potioneer when I graduate. I also signed up for the new Cooking Club my housemate started, and conned Faina into joining too. I brought along a box with recipes of Baba's I copied when we were in St. Petersburg, to help Shui get the club off the ground.
Things were going well this term, until Faina and I went home for Christmas. Momma was sick again, which really worried me, but after we decorated the house for the holiday, Faina decided to take another trip to Coventry to get some answers out of our absentee father, since the Aurors hadn't done anything about what happened last year. When we got to the house, we met Amanda, Papa's new wife, whom seems like nice lady, and really felt bad for her when Faina pressed Papa on what happened to us. Shortly after we got there, Momma and Cousin Sergei showed up; I don't know how they knew where to find us, but it was a big surprise for us. When Momma saw Papa again, everyone knew then something bad happened, and the Aurors really needed to be involved.
Momma didn't have the Aurors check out our story about Papa last year because she thought maybe I was mistaken, and didn't want to cause a big mess, but now she knew we were right all along. The Aurors think somebody erased Papa's memories of all of us, which means he couldn't have done the horrible things Faina thought he had. All I know is, we got a bunch of answers to some questions, and we got new family members. Unfortunately, we also got a bunch of trouble too.
Half a dozen men broke into our house shortly after we got home, they tried to murder Faina and Momma, and one of them kidnapped me. I found out Madam Harcroft was responsible for the fire which nearly killed Momma, erased Papa's memories of us, and arranged to have the house attacked. She decided I was worth salvaging, and would have started erasing my memories too, but the Aurors showed up and saved the day. Cousin Sergei was okay, and we found out Momma's cold was turning into pneumonia because of her trip to Coventry. Faina almost died protecting Momma from those horrible men, and I wouldn't leave her side in the hospital until she woke up. Our house was badly damaged because of the fight, so we spent the rest of the holiday at a hotel in London, and Grandma and Grandpa Patrovna spent Christmas and Boxing Day with us.
The rest of the school year wasn't nearly so crazy, for which I was thankful, though I did need to go back to London to testify against Madam Harcroft. I'm really looking forward to summer, just because I want to relax, and put all these bad things in the past.
Fourth Year: It took a while, but things with my family have finally settled down, and I'm glad to say things are getting better. Madam Harcroft, and the men who broke into our house, kidnapped me, and nearly killed the rest of the family, were sent to Azkaban, several of them had lifetime sentences since they used Unforgivable Spells on Momma and Faina, and one of them tried to use a Killing Curse on Sergei. As for Jeeves, nobody seems know what happened to him, and I've had reoccurring dreams where he's stalking me.
This year was kinda sad in that this is Faina's last term at school, and so we've tried to make the most of the time we have together. Of course, we have meals together all the time, but we also got in a few more chess games and did our Art projects together. I was kinda obliged to be in her Dueling Club this year, even though I really don't like doing it. Faina and Momma have told me I'm staying in Defense class all through school, and Faina has asked me to stay with the club as well so I can get in more practice. One nice thing is having Cian to be with, and I met his family over Christmas holiday, which is only fair since he met mine last Christmas.
As summer starts, I'm seeing things starting to change at home. Faina has graduated, and she's started looking to get on at the Ministry. I'm hoping she isn't planning to move away, because I don't know if I'm ready to see my big sister leave. It's another reminder that come next fall I'll be boarding the Hogwarts Express without her.
Fifth Year: I'll admit I was really uneasy about going to school this term, since Faina wouldn't be coming with me, or maybe it was more like I wasn't accompanying her. Many of her old friends would be gone too, so I wouldn't have any of them to keep me company either. I guess a lot of it had to do with how things went when we were younger, and she went to Hogwarts, while I was stuck at our old school. But this time was different, as she pointed out to me: I have a boyfriend, and plenty of friends, and I would be alone only if I really wanted to be, which I didn't. I decided it was time for me to start making my own way, and not be in Faina's shadow any more.
One way this happened was by having my own club to be Captain of. When Lizzy asked me to take the Art Club over, I was absolutely delighted to do it, and I made sure when I opened the doors that it was a really big deal. I even invited Professor Hawthorne to attend if she had the time. I'm also still sticking it out with the Dueling Club, not by my choice, but because I really need the practice. Cooking Club was much more fun, but that was hardly surprising.
Of course, the most important thing to do was prepare for OWLs, and I worked really hard to do well. Though I did the best that I could, I know Momma wasn't particularly thrilled with some of my grades, particularly my DADA grade. With OWLs done, I had a few hard choices to make, and I'm dropping three classes (Astronomy, History of Magic, and Mythology) so I have the time I need to do well on my NEWTs.
Sixth Year:
Seventh Year: This was the last year at school for me, and I was determined to do well in my NEWTs and be ready what would happen next. Over the summer, I visited St, Mungo's because I wanted to see what it might be like to work there, and to find out what classes and the grades I'd need on my NEWTs. I used to not like visiting the hospital when I was younger, but that was because Momma was so sick, and there was no way we could have cared for her ourselves, and now I'm interested in working there as a Healer, but I figured I could concentrate on Potions. Being a Potioneer was still okay, and a nice goal, but I found I liked helping people too.
There were a bunch of things I wanted to do at school, one of them was to do better in my Defense classes, as now I knew I needed an 'EE' on my exams. That meant having to buckle down and study harder, getting help from Madam Cohen, and I arranged to have a tutor. I asked Faina to meet me in Hogsmeade when I had the chance to be off school grounds, and we would work on getting my skills honed for the exams. It meant I wasn't doing more fun things with my friends, but that was okay if I could get the job I wanted later.
There was also the Art Club; this was my last year as the Captain, so I wanted to make my mark there before handing it off. I got permission to hold a club Art Exhibit, and made sure all the members had the chance to show what they could do. It was timed out for right before the Christmas holiday, since I didn't want to have things interfere with exam prep. I wanted to have it in the Great Hall, but had to settle for setting things up in our club room. Hopefully, they'll continue it next year.
The term went fast, partly because I was so busy, but I made time to have fun with my friends and have quality couple-time with Cian. When the NEWTs came, I was so nervous. I studied hard for them, and when it came time to actually take the exams I made sure to do as well as I could on them. I almost blew my DADA exam because I just couldn't deal with the boggart, no matter how hard I tried. Faina told me not to be discouraged; not everyone can stare down their worst fears and laugh them off.
Well, I've graduated from Hogwarts, and while I'm sad I won't see all my friends everyday, I'm excited at all the things that can come my way. Interestingly, I think Cian's planning something big for later this summer ...
Postgraduation:
Well, not long after graduating from Hogwarts, and receiving the results of my NEWTs (I still can't believe I managed to do so well in my Defense Against the Dark Arts NEWT, since I still couldn't beat the boggart), I put in my application to work at St. Mungo's. It was my intention to get in and work at the new Pediatric Wing, and I hoped that with my NEWTs in Alchemy and Potions I could maybe also do some specialized work there as well. I was soon accepted and was working there as a Trainee. I'll have to put in six years of hard work to become a full-fledged member of the team, but that's okay. Thankfully, the staff is all so nice to me.
Not long ago, Cian and I went to the new skating rink which opened up in London. It was there he proposed to me, right there on the ice; though he didn't try going down on one knee, as he figured we'd both end up flat on the ice.
Early in 2050, Cian and I got married, and now I'm styled as 'Kitty Quinlan'
2052 we had our first child, Dymitri.
2054 was a busy year for us, and this was when I earned my status as a fully-fledged Healer at St. Mungo's, as I completed my apprenticeship. We had our second child, Aleksandr, who very much resembles his father as he has gotten older. Shortly after he was born, I transferred into the Pediatrics Wing at St. Mungo's, as I like working with children, and it's a more comfortable fit for me. It wasn't long after this we moved into our current three-storey house in Glasgow. Cian's happy with the new place, as now he has room to store his sizeable collection of comic books and sci-fi memorabilia.
2058 we had our youngest child, Alenka, and it wasn't before long that we realized she would take after me, as she had the same big blue eyes and the same flyaway blonde hair that I had when I was little.
It wasn't long ago, summer of 2065 to be exact when we had a big scare while attending the long-planned family reunion and convocation, the latter my husband derisively referred to as 'The Game of Crones', though thankfully out of earshot of my family. Our cousin Natalshenka was lost in the nearby forest, and Alynn went out as part of the search parties. It turns out she was abducted by a hag who murders and eats young witches, and Faina needed to rescue her, after recruiting Alynn and our nephew, Kasamir to help her out. We nearly lost them all, as the boys were almost eaten by wolves and killed by the hags' servants, while Faina was almost killed by the hag herself. All of them were injured, with Alynn getting banged up and suffering wounds from the knife wielded by a cannibalistic House Elf named Malyshev. To rub salt in the wound, I find out later from Faina that Alynn stayed with the search party because he felt he needed to do something to earn his place in my good graces again.
In the aftermath of the incident, it was originally planned that we would have Kasamir staying with us in Glasgow, while Natalya stayed with Mom and Papa Serghei. It would have worked out well for us, as when Kas stayed with us in the past, it was rather like having a third adult in the house, and an extra older brother for the kids, as he fit in so seamlessly. Unfortunately, when we did this it also poisoned Alynn's attitudes and contributed to his sense that he wasn't a valued part of the family. Clearly Kasamir sensed this as well, as he suggested he stay with my parents, so he could stay close to Natalya.

Pets: A small white half-Kneazle cat Faina rescued from the dread and cruel Transfiguration OWL when she was just a kitten. I named her Snezhok, which translates to 'Snowball' in Russian, because she's just a ball of white fluff, and she has a pink tongue and her eyes cross when she meows. As she's gotten older, she hasn't gotten much larger, and when she wants your attention, you will hear it across the house.

Personality:
■ Imaginative- Kas enjoys being in his own little world, sometimes at the expense of what he’s doing in the real world. This also means he can come up with solutions to problems that might not necessarily come to others ■ Practical- Thankfully, his imaginative streak is leavened with a measure of ‘groundedness’; while he might come up with a really great and cool idea, he’ll be the first to torpedo it if he doesn’t think it’ll actually work. ■ Headstrong- Kas has learned that there are times when one must stick to one’s principles, whether folk like it or not. He also knows that one has to carry on with life, even if he might not care to sometimes. ■ Scarred- Physically and emotionally. Kas was in a massive railway accident, he saw both of his parents and his older sister die (yes, he will see the thestrals) and was grievously injured into the bargain himself. While the injuries have healed, he has vivid nightmares ('I hear their screams in the night, and I see their faces in the flames') and scars, most of which are hidden by his clothes and his hair. ■ Loyal- As a result of seeing his parents die, Kas hangs onto his remaining emotional attachments a little bit tighter than might be expected. ■ Moody- There are times when his moods take a bad turn, and his temper grows short. History:
Childhood: Kasamir is the younger son of Piotr Morozov and Merriam Patrovna. He was born in Edinburgh, where his father was student at the College of Engineering, and Merriam was a functionary at the Ministry of International Cooperation. His earliest memories were of his parents and his blonde-haired older sister. His coal-black hair and green eyes were seen as a bit of an oddity, as neither of his parents nor his sister had features like that. When Kass was three, the family moved to Arkhangelsk, Russia, after his father graduated from school and took a job with Gazprom, a major natural gas supplier in the Russian Federation. As it worked out, living there allowed him to get close to his mother’s branch of the Patrovna family, and get introduced to the wonders of the Wizarding World. Other than that, the family lived much any other Muggle family in the Federation, with the usual issues that happen.
School Years: Everything changed when Kasamir turned ten years old. In June of 2058, he and his family were taking a family trip, paid for by the company, when the train they were on derailed and several cars exploded and caught fire. Kasamir saw his parents burn to death in front of him, and though he and Lana were badly injured in the accident, they managed to crawl out of the wreckage before he blacked out from the pain. When Kasamir eventually woke up, he learned Lana died in the hospital in St. Petersburg the night they were brought in, and he’d been badly burned as well.
After being discharged from hospital, Kasamir returned to Arkhangelsk to live with his cousins and recover. Though he received magical healing, there were still scars, and he suffers vivid nightmares from the accident. On top of that, he started having magical incidents take place, centered on him. His cousins were delighted, of course; this was good news, he’d inherited the magical talents his mother had. Right around the anniversary of the accident, an owl arrived, bearing a letter from Hogwarts…Hogwarts?!
The Sorting Hat:
The Professor set the hat down carefully on the student's head. For a moment the hat was silent before speaking.... Wonderful Sorting Hat! Why thank you much! This school as well is full of many unexpected things, but don't worry, you'll get quite used to it in...
SLYTHERIN!
First Year: Somebody up there is having a good laugh at my expense. I got accepted into the same House as my Aunt Faina, something I greatly appreciated, right up until I found out where I'd be sleeping. Sure, the Gryffindors and the Ravenclaws get to live up in towers, I'm bunking in a glorified tomb, under a lake. Yes, there are windows, allowing a bit of light, if one doesn't mind it being filtered through the water of the Black Lake, but forget getting any fresh air in, which doesn't do my clautrophobic issues any good, except forcing me to confront them on a daily and nightly basis. I have nightmares most nights, feeling the flames licking up and coming to claim me, only to wake up in a cold sweat inside a rock-walled dormitory, and try my best not to wake my roommates. As I said, somebody is having a good laugh at my expense.
There's no hockey, or bandy (no surprise, we are in Scotland, not Russia), but there is Quidditch, so, naturally I tried my hand at the only game in town. I made Beater, which means I shot iron cannonballs at people, while others do the same, and I have to divert them. Have to admit, there is a certain amount of satisfaction whacking a ball with a bat and sending it on its way. Unfortunately, our team has certain problems, specifically a neophyte, patzer of a Seeker, and all the other teams have Seventh Years as theirs'. Needless to say, our doom was sealed the moment our roster was settled.
It's not all bad, though, I found a group of gamers to hang with; too bad all the gaming books I had were ones they weren't familiar with and printed in Russian. I like my Potions and Charms classes, but I could do without taking Astronomy in the middle of the night and hiking up and down from the highest tower in the school. I'm also pretty sure the Dark Arts education I'm getting isn't half what I could have had if I'd gone to Durmstrang with my other friends. I'll have to compare notes over the summer if I have the chance.
Second Year: Going into my second year, I established the Hogwarts Chess Association, created to foster interest an advance Wizard Chess and similar games in school, and possibly lead to inter-school tournaments. How this place didn't have such an organization already escapes me. Was duly pleased to get a good turnout, including our Quidditch Captain, and Prefect, Brianna, and her second shadow, Csuri. Speaking of things quidditch, also put in a good solid effort being a member of the Slytherin Quidditch team and we not only swept all the other teams but won the Quidditch Cup and the House Cup.
Third Year: After school let out, I returned to London, and learned things changed for my adoptive guardian. My aunt was now Head Auror for the Ministry offices in St. Petersburg, owing to her seniority and her facility with the Russian language and culture. As a result, our lodgings changed, and now we're living in a largish flat in the heart of Russia's original capital. Being Head Auror, my Aunt Faina had a number of operatives working under her, and so she wasn't doing as much fieldwork as she might have previously, however her schedule made being a family difficult.
I spent a good amount of my time being with my cousins and visiting my friends who were attending Durmstrang. Grandma Patrovna gifted me with a Moscow Watchdog, whom I've named 'Medved' which translates to 'bear'. When I got him, he looked like a tiny St. Bernard, and I was warned he wouldn't stay little for long, and I would need to learn how to control him sooner than later. Over the summer I participated in a World Chess Federation sanctioned chess tournament, where I placed high enough in the junior division, I was able to earn enough points to get my 'Master' ranking in that body.
Returning to school was a near run thing, as we were running a little late, and my grandparents got me to the platform with only minutes to spare, having just enough time to load my trunk and say farewell (we do not say 'good-bye', it invites tragedy) before needing to board the Express. Things went much smoother upon getting to school, with my Chess Club getting more of a presence in the school in its second year of existence, including featuring with some prominence in the newly announced Club Carnivale to take place at the end of the year, an event sponsored by our newly appointed Head Girl, Linsey Grey-Cavendish.
One of the things I was most looking forward to was the return to Quidditch, as it meant being able to spend more time with Hesperia. I'm not sure whys and the hows of it all, but I've started looking forward to seeing her and spending more time with her, and I spent a goodly amount of effort keeping her from being bludgeoned by Bludgers during our matches. Winning our first match, I was sure we'd repeat our performance last year, and our Captain spoke of renewing a Slytherin dynasty such as what was experienced decades previously when her mother played here at school. Pretty cool thought, and it lasted right until we lost our next match, and then the pressure was on to win our last one if we wanted a shot at the Quidditch Cup.
At a point towards the late end of the semester was the dreaded 'boggart class'. I say dreaded as it required of us to face a boggart, a creature that visited upon its victims all the absolute worst events of our lives and laid bare the sum of our worst fears. Most of my classmates had the usual phobias one might expect, and when my turn came the creature came screaming out of that locked chest. I was visited by my nightmares in the waking world, and I could smell my flesh burning as well as hear the screams of the trapped souls still inside the twisted metal of the train. So could everybody else apparently, as it was enough to basically clear out the classroom. I refused to run, wasn't planning to, no matter what. I laughed and told the boggart that it already had its shot at killing me, and I was still there before sending it back into its box.
We won our last match, and so our season was not lost, but the Cup was, as we hadn't earned enough goals to surpass Ravenclaw's totals. But it wasn't a total loss, as I was spending time with Hes. When the Carnivale came, we were both looking for each other, so we could spend time together. We had a nice meal there, and I tried Greek food with her. I get lost looking in her eyes and I found she has the cutest fangs and an allergy to garlic. It's possible she could be a dhampir, a half-vampire, not that such things mean anything to me, and I'll not push her on the subject, as I could be totally off base and maybe ruin a good thing, more to the point, I want to have earned enough of her trust for her to confide in me such a revelation.
I think next year I'll be joining Cooking Club with her... In the meantime, I have an international tournament in Moscow to prepare for.
Fourth Year: The tournament in Moscow went rather well, as I made it all the way to the quarterfinals before having to concede to the girl who ended up winning the whole thing. Despite this, I still accumulated accreditation points towards earning the rank of Grandmaster. Mind you, there's still a long way for me to go to achieve that, and I still need to actually win tournaments rather than placing in the top ranks, but I'm not complaining as I still get international exposure. In between tournaments I took the chance to do some shopping and picked up gifts for Hes.
She's really occupied my thoughts a lot lately, enough that I've told my family about her rather, rather frequently according to Aunt Katya. Enough so she was the one person I wanted to see more than any other when I got back to school, and enough so that she was inspiration for me to add the whole of the southern regions in my campaign world, corresponding to the Caucasus, Armenia, Türkiye and the Greek isles. All summer I was planning to ask her out since we both could go on Hogsmeade weekends this year, and ask her to be my girlfriend, as I got the feeling she wanted to reciprocate.
This year added a new wrinkle to my school life. Instead of going to school and coming home for Christmas alone, my second cousin, Katya's, elder son, Dymitri was old enough to accompany me. Alynn, as he styles himself is not like me, he barely speaks Russian, and when he does it is with a horrendous Scottish accent and is more of a boisterous sort who's into collecting comic books and keeps a ferret as a pet, rather like his father, Cousin Cian. We have Quidditch in common, though not much else. Both Faina and Katya have asked me to act in the stead of an older brother for Alynn, even if he barely listens to what I say. After being effectively an only child since Lana died, I'm not sure how well I will fulfill this duty. I wish she was here to advise me on what to do, and, better still, what not to do, but she isn't, takova zhizn.
With Brianna Quinn-Smith graduating, Csuri was now captain of Slytherin Quidditch, and I was wondering who she might call upon to be her second. To be honest, I would have been delighted to be considered, but I wasn't sure how we'd mesh, given her volatile moods and her anti-social proclivities. The longer the summer went on, the more I realized I'd been passed over, and maybe it was just as well. It was my sincere hope that whoever Csuri picked could keep this crew of Snakes on track this year and could weather their captain's unpredictable moods.
Arriving at the station, I was greeted by the vision of my intended in this beautiful dark blue dress. I was blown away, enough so I was recalling poetry by Lord Byron (Mister 'Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know' himself), and immediately hoping I'd see in that dress again sometime soon. I soon found out Hes was not only Csuri's deputy, but she was joining Chess Club and the Adventurer's Guild, and I reciprocated by joining the Culinary Club, so we could have ... well, 'couple time', even if we weren't exactly a couple yet.
Well, the first game of the season didn't go so well for us, in fact nothing really went right, and we lost. My record of consecutive games with a save ended, and poor Hes was injured due to my lapse. If she didn't have clues as to my feelings for her previously, she certainly did when I carried her in my arms all the way to the Hospital Wing, promising I would carry her to the ends of the Earth if she wished it. Thankfully we won our second match, as I'm not sure how Csuri would have handled things afterwards.
As the year progressed, there was a school-wide pick-up Quidditch match announced. I strongly suspect it was arranged to give Sebastian Moon, Gryffindor's luckless Seeker, a boost, as he ended up anchoring one of the teams, an ad-hoc collection of mainly second-string and younger players. Alynn actually got into the mix as a Chaser, while Hes and I wound up on opposing sides. We discussed the matter and agreed that if I sent a Bludger her direction it was only because the game situation required for it to be done. As things worked out, neither of us really ended up being a major factor in the match, although I got my game back on track and made several important saves, and Moon scored a win.
Our last match of the year was against the luckless Lions, owners of a losing streak stretching back across seasons of play, and sure enough everybody was pulling for them just so Sebastian could finally have something to hang his metaphorical hat upon. Csuri wasn't having any of it, nor was I; there was a job to be done and a game to be won, and maybe a Cup to earn, although the odds of that were not so good. In the end, we won, but it didn't feel like it, it was a hollow victory where we won a match which would have meant so much more for the loser to win, and for the victor to accrue so little in the win, as Ravenclaw scored the Cup despite our best efforts.
During the last Hogsmeade weekend of the term that Hes and I resolved a matter long simmering between us. The question of whether we were an actual couple or not was never definitely answered, even though there were certainly clues throughout the year. Until our visit to the Hobbit's Hangout, where Hes finally asked the question that I'd been planning to ask somewhere else a little more private. I kissed her right there in the gaming store, in front of the dice display. Now we were a couple I suggested I visit her in Greece when I attended my first chess tournament of the summer in Athens, only to learn she lived in London, and the trip would require her grandparents to provide escourt. I then suggested maybe we try for Paris, the tournament in August, as the trip from London was no more than a daytrip these days.
Shortly after coming home, I received my supplies list for the coming year, and it came with a Prefect badge, and I was tapped by Ruth to succeed her as Captain of the Adventurer's Guild. Things were already taking an interesting turn ...
Fifth Year: I would have much to handle this year, owing to earning the position of Prefect, as well as inheriting the Adventurer's Guild from the Levy sisters. However, before all that there were two chess tournaments I was attending this year, the first being in Athens, taking place not long after the end of the school, while the latter was in Paris. I was hoping Hes and I could meet up in Athens, and she could be my guest at the formal dinners that were a part of the tournaments. Ironically, she doesn't live in Greece, though her grandparents are from Thessaloniki, they live in London. I won the junior tournament in Athens, and placed high enough in the Paris event to be in the semi-final matches where I scrapped together a draw against my last opponent.
This year's Quidditch season was a rough one as it seemed like we could never get on track. I just hope we never have a repeat of the match against the Badgers. Beito and Hes got angrier and angrier as the match wore on, and when we finally lost, Hes stormed off the pitch, and I knew there was something going on. By the time I caught up to her, she was in the Tapestry Corridor demolishing a suit of armour and a display case and looking more like Dracula's bride than my usual sweet Hes. After feeding her some blood, which she really can't metabolize, but it helped blunt the hunger, I was able to wrap her in a blanket and get up to the Hospital Wing with Matron Marni's help.
OWLs. They were the focus of my fifth year at Hogwarts, and my performance would determine how the rest of my career at school would go, if not the whole of my future. No pressure here, no, none at all. I poured myself into my studies, so much so that by the end of the exams, I discovered I was a good ten pounds lighter than when I started, but then there were times I was skipping meals, and sleep to get in additional study time and to polish off extra credit papers in order to boost my grades. I was determined not to stand in front of Baba and having to explain a poor performance on OWLs to her.
The other large event was Student Talent Showcase, which thankfully I wasn't asked to do the heavy lifting for. This was Lewis' big project we prefects were involved with organizing, while the students did the rest. I soon discovered that Lewis was a tiresome person to have in charge of everything. As much as I like him personally and admire his skills on the pitch, he has the remarkable ability to say 'yes', 'no', and 'maybe' all in the same sentence. Though I suspect much of it is a result of imbibing too many energy drinks in close succession, should he ever tire of playing for Montrose, he might consider a career in politics.
Sixth Year: So, who knew family reunions could be so dangerous? Well, I knew they could be contentious, as this was more than the usual gathering of the extended family, it also served as the convocation of the elders of the extended family and our familial allies in Russia, where agreements were struck and alliances secured through blood. One of my uncles sniggeringly referred to the whole thing as 'the Game of Crones', as all these things were being settled by a council of elderly women sitting in a room sipping sherry, and setting up marriages and the like for the next decade or two. I had good reason to want to have Hes on my arm when we arrived at the family compound outside St. Petersburg, as I wanted her company most of all, but also so the elders could see her as well; instead, I had only photographs to confirm her existence. I was prepared to swear out Unbreakable Oaths to her grandparents ensuring her safety, but they needed her in London, helping them run their shop, and babysitting little Niko (who apparently has my middle name. Somebody please figure out how I made such the impression) as their mother was simply too lost to manage her duties as their sole bit of parental presence.
During the reunion, we had what we originally assumed was a small matter of my little cousin Natalya and a friend of hers getting lost. It happens more often than it should, as Natalya loses track of time when she rides out on her Herbological expeditions, and has trouble navigating the forest behind the compound, as it is very large, quite dark and thick with old growth, and neither she nor her friend are experienced riders. So, the adults and young men were pulled together to form our customary search parties, as it was getting close to dusk and the girls were already hours' overdue. As it worked out my grouping was just Alynn and Medved, and we were given flares and the like, as neither of us were allowed to cast magic. While we found Larissa, and her horse showed back up on its own, Natalya was still lost. Except she wasn't simply lost; she'd been abducted by a hag, a hag who may have sent the wolves after her horse and the searchers. Alynn and I were confronted by a pack of wolves, and I was prepared to die fighting the wolves so Alynn could escape with the horse when Aunt Faina came to save us.
We eventually found the hag's house, battled her minions and rescued Natalya from a horrible fate, though all of us were badly injured, and I nearly died from blood loss. Because we earned the ire of the hag's allies, a cabal of witches and wizards known as the 'Winter Council', Natalya and I were sent to live with Aunt Faina's mother in Surrey, and Baba has made my little cousin my personal responsibility. So now, Medved and I have the converted attic to live in, which is actually surprisingly comfortable, while Talya has the room my aunts lived in when they were children. Talya has adopted me as her 'big brother', and I have done the same in return. I know Lana would have appreciated it.
Other highlights of my summer include starting my side venture with Finn MacDavis-Grey, as I wanted to have something that was a part of the Adventurer's Guild that persisted, even once I've graduated. We communicated back and forth and visited over the summer and launched 'Castle Creations', where we created a small line of miniatures, for the campaign worlds he and I created separately, as well as for my on-going Traveller campaign. Finn has developed into being quite the artificer, and since we can manufacture these miniatures ourselves and whatever quantity, we can make custom character figure for our players, plus Finn can create his historical and quasi-historical fantasy designs, and I can have my miniature starships and other figures for my needs, as well as the Rus needed for my campaign. I can now say that Hes has been immortalized in pewter, and she got gifted with the first one out of the forge.
The other highlight was my trip to Madrid to participate in the international chess tournament. While it was expected for me to do well, I swept all my opponents, including the grandmaster I faced in the finals. The last match sealed the deal, and I was awarded the rank of 'Grandmaster' at the banquet on the last night. Aunt Faina was there to see me get the promotion, and I was gratified to see her health improved since earlier in the summer, though it would still be months before she fully recovered from the battle in the hag's house.
With the start of school, I started Chess Club and was pleased to announce Csuri's advancement to the rank of 'Master'. It puzzled her greatly that I thought it more important that she be recognized instead of my own efforts. She also thought it so important that she be on even footing with me, and I pointed out to her that I never saw her as inferior and how she was one of the players in school who truly offered a challenge. Culinary Club saw Talya, Alynn and I collaborating on dishes, which I thought to be fun, and we made certain Hes always had things safe for her to try out.
With the start of Quidditch, we all knew this would be Csuri and Vik's last campaign, so we were determined to win the Cup, failing that, at least help break Ravenclaw's grasp upon it after Lewis' epic three-peat. After the events of last year's match against the Badgers, or more accurately its aftermath, I've taken to keeping Blood Lollis and a flask of Type-O blood in my bag in case Hes lost control of her hunger and the Beast came upon her again. Thankfully, it came to that, and despite three frustrating matches, the Snakes finally won a Cup, after a five-year drought.
This year's big event was the Springtime Dance, anchored by Beito and Charlotte, this year's Head Students. After finally meeting Hes' grandparents at the train station, and introducing myself in Greek, I was able to visit her over the holidays, and I took her dress shopping in Diagon Alley around Christmas, with my little cousin/ sister in tow. Meeting up with Csuri and Vik was fun, and Vik covered the cost of everybody's purchases at Cloak and Coven, including the dress Talya wanted that looked like something out of a Tolstoy novel. I escourted Talya to the ball, and found Hes waiting for me, a vision in black. Needless to say, it was a wonderful night for us.
Seventh Year: I very nearly lost my beautiful Western Star over the summer. She nearly died in my arms. After dropping her off at home from a date, Hes called, and I knew she was in trouble. Immediately Apparating there I learn she and her family were the target of a home invasion, and I found Hes bleeding out by the crib of her baby brother. If I hadn't acted immediately, she wouldn't have lived long enough to get to St. Mungo's. She wouldn't sleep if she wasn't in my arms for a while afterwards, and she suffers nightmares the same as I do.
As it worked out her half-brother tried to murder her, and he, in turn was killed by their father, saving me the task of hunting him down myself. We also learned Hes has a half-sister, Andromeda Thayer, who started school this term at Hogwarts, and it was likely she would have been the target of their half-brother after attacking Hes. I'm now a part of Hes' family, and I split time between them and Great-Aunt's place over Christmas.
I received the honour of being Head Student, along with Alice, and we soon started planning out our big project: the Winter Festival, to be set before the holidays. Yes, I did lean on Talya to help me with ideas, and while we couldn't transplant St. Petersburg, there was a skating rink which Talya loved to skate on, as well as other things. I think our event went as well as Bee and Charlotte's Spring Dance last year, if not better, and at least I didn't need to arrange to get my tailor to travel from Russia to fit Alynn with a suit.
Call me crazy, but the Quidditch team seems much calmer now that Csuri graduated and Hes is running things, as Csuri got a bit manic at times. It was a bit sad to play out my last campaign, knowing there would be no Quidditch for me after graduation. I watched my little sister, and my cousin in turn compete against Hes, but there was no stopping her. By the time we faced the Lions we had enough goals scored that the Cup was ours no matter the result. With my career done, Hes now has my scouting notes compiled over years of play and observations. While I quibble over my own performance, I will say that I had fun and look forward to seeing if Hes can continue her win streak in her last run through.
Aside from the Winter Festival, the other big event this year would be, of course, my NEWTs. To say that they'll make the difference as to the course of life would be an understatement, and I need to do as well on them as I did my OWLs and show improvement to stay in my family's good graces. So, no pressure there. I spent more time in the Prefect's meeting room than I did in our Common Room, and there were days at a time I skipped meals and sleep to study, and polish off assignments and extra credit papers. at least I wasn't as feral as Csuri got at the end, but my marathon sprint netted me the grades I needed, cost me a good twenty pounds in weight and untold hours of lost sleep.
After all that I've gone through this year, and now I've crossed the Black Lake, I need only wait on my NEWT results to determine what comes next. From my family matriarch the most I'll get is an 'as expected of you', no matter how high my scores are. Now, I can work on publishing my game world and doing my half of being Castle Creations, and there's a 100 mm pewter figure of Hes sitting on my desk.

Unfortunately, this means I may hurt somebody's feelings without meaning to. ■ I'm always comparing myself to my older sister, Reina, and trying to measure up to her example. History:
Childhood: Natalya was born on May 13, 2054, at a private hospital for witches and wizards in St. Petersburg to Evelenya and Artemyi. She was the third of a total of four children born into their family, with Raisa (six years older) being the eldest, and her brother Kusma (three years older) ahead of her, and her little sister, Froskaya being born three years later in 2057. The Stepanovich family is a cadet branch of the extended Patrovna clan based out of St. Petersburg, having been brought in because of a series of marriages over the course of several generations, with the last taking place during the twilight years of Tsarist rule in Russia.
School Years: Natalya has attended the Marakov Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, a private school for the young scions of old, wealthy families, many of whom have ties to the Wizarding world, for several years now. It is here she goes to school with her best friend, Larissa Moryakova, who is from another old Wizarding family. It is here the girls share an interest in plants, and both of them are involved in the school’s equestrian team. This puts them at odds with another girl, Zoya Bagrovna, who is also from an old Wizarding family, and works hard to make their lives difficult when they compete to see who makes the dressage team that goes to competition.
Shortly after Natalya turned eleven, she and Larissa went into the forest behind the estate with the plan to travel to the nearby river, collect some magical water plants and bring them back to Natalya's Baba, as part of a Herbology lesson and to earn some spending money. Unfortunately, during their expedition, they encounter a witch named Olesya, who abducted Natalya, while Larissa gets Obliviated, and gets lost in the woods as she tries to find her way home.
As it turns out, Olesya is a witch who is part of a cabal known as the 'Winter Council', and since the untimely death of her father has engaged in unnatural experiments and has attempted to extend her life and expand her powers by murdering young magically active children, stealing their magical power and transferring them to her using Dark thaumaturgical rites and eating their flesh. Natalya was spared a horrible fate when she was located and rescued by her cousins Kasamir Patrovna and Alynn Quinlan, and their aunt, the veteran Witch Hunter Faina Patrovna.
It was determined that she might still be in peril were she to attend Durmstrang as planned, and so Baba arranged for her to attend Hogwarts with her cousins, and live with Faina's mother, Reyna, and her foster father/cousin, Sergei in Surrey for the duration of her magical schooling. Natalya has 'adopted' Kasamir as her surrogate big brother, since she wouldn't have Kusma at Hogwarts with her, while Kas has adopted her as a little sister, since he hasn't got one.
The Sorting Hat: Actual quote lost to the Great Gaia Purge
First Year: Well, it turns out the Sorting Hat actually listens, as I told it about my family and what Houses they were placed in at Durmstrang. I was Sorted in Hufflepuff, whose colours mirror Keltainen, so I suppose that's as close to being Sorted into Reina's House as I'll get. I'm not happy about living underground, but the Hufflepuff dorms are warm and inviting, unlike the glorified tomb Kas dwells in. Of course I signed up to play Quidditch. I was determined to make the first team straight out of the box just like Reina did when she was a First Year. Thanks to Kasamir's coaching, I had a good tryout but was only able to make the Reserves. It's not all bad, I'm on the team after all, and I have the chance to learn more about the game, and perhaps next year I'll get a better result.
There are quite a few clubs at Hogwarts, more than I would have guessed there would be. I signed up for the Art Club and immediately discovered the first meeting was a covered dish affair. Who knew? Well, I didn't, but I'll know better next year. I went with Alynn and Kas to the Culinary Club, and it was fun, as it gave the oppourtunity to make things outside my usual comfort zone. I made sure to get in the Herbology Club, along with my Housemate Bryn, who concerns me given he needs a stuffed rabbit to be able to speak freely. I know how the kids at Marakov would have treated him, so I'm starting to watch out for his wellbeing. I also signed up for the Wanderlust Society and found that it'll be better once I have access to my own broomstick.
The big event this year was the Springtime Dance, and Kas took me to a shop in Diagon Alley that specializes in fancy dress. I wanted a dress like the one worn by Anna Karenina in the Tolstoy novel, and I took a sketch I drew to the shop. Not only did a friend of Kas cover everyone's bill, but another friend Kas helped me make my dream come true, as she was one of the designers and makers at the shop. Kas also escourted me to the ball, and I got to dance with Bryn, among others, there. It was so much fun, and there were so many flowers. Beito and Charlotte did such a nice job.
With school over shortly after the dance, I guess Kas and I going back to Surrey to live with Great-Aunt Reyna, but I'm holding out hope of a trip back to St. Petersburg. I miss my friends (especially Larissa) and my family (I want to compare notes with Reina and see where I am in my career at school, relative to her career track), and as much as anything else, I miss my horses. Second Year: Over the summer, Kas took me home to St. Petersburg. As soon as I was unpacked, I was off to ride my horses, and I could tell they missed me so much. I whistled a certain tune, and the entire herd was around me, all of them desperate for my love and attention. I got to ride my favourite horses, Budyonny and Nochnoy Ogon, and it pains me that, as a witch, I can't ride in dressage and cross-country events.
I saw Larissa, and it was like we were never parted, picking up right where we left off, although we weren't allowed to ride into the forest without one of the hands escourting us the whole time. Larissa made it into Durmstrang, just like I knew she would, though I wish she were with me at Hogwarts. And now that I play Quidditch, I was introduced to the game our family plays in the woods, flying through the forest, dodging trees and each other while trying to get a Quaffle into the scoring baskets placed at odd locations and angles. Reina and I got to spend quality time together, something we rarely got to do when she was at school. I still look up to her, but there's somebody else working their way into my pantheon of personal heroes, and she happens to date Kas.
I thought this year was going to be like last year, in that I was going to be doing nothing but warming a bench and cheering on my friends in Quidditch this year, but I think my performance in last spring's scrimmage game showed Seph and Rey that I can be the spark they need on offense. After putting up a good showing at tryouts, I got promoted to the first string, and I had my hands full going head-to-head with Hes in my first match. My future sister-in-law may be older and more experienced, but we both share the same drive, and I held my own against her, up to a point. Is it okay to hero-worship her?
The major event this year was the Winter Festival, which Kas and Alice were co-chairing. I'd like to think I played at least a small part in all that, since I was funneling ideas to Kas about what to do. The idea of a skating rink went forward as did the pine forest where all the flowers were at the Spring Dance. It couldn't compete with the big festivals in St. Petersburg, or being with Dad and seeing the onion domes of the Cathedral all lit up, but that's okay. Kas worked a bit of his magic and brought a bit of home to Hogwarts, and that meant a lot to me.
Another cool thing that happened was meeting Andromeda Thayer at school. She's a year behind me, and she goes by 'Andi', although I like calling her 'Drommy', because that's so cool too. She's Hes' half-sister, via her vampire father, so a dhampir like Hes. She is so sweet and shy, and I love her style. She didn't even know she had a half-sister until she came to school, and that was a revelation. Because Hes is basically already family (just a matter of when Kas marries her; I mean, it's so obvious he plans to do it), well, Drommy is too by extension.
I wish the Quidditch season had gone better, though. Got hurt in our second match and fainted at the end of it; guess I'm not as tough as Kas is. Eddie was nice enough to carry me off the pitch. As much as I tried to emulate Hes and encourage Eddie to be similarly aggressive in our playstyle, the Badgers came up dry. Kas and Hes won the Cup, which was I was happy about, since Hes is my hero, and this was Kas' last year at school, but it was hard watching Alynn fight all season to score and coming up so short.
With the end of the school year, I saw my big brother cross the Black Lake once more. Now, I have a question: what is school going to be like without him being there? I don't think he knows how much his Malenkiy Vsadnik needs him ...

Romantic Interest: None as yet
Enemies: Zoya Bagrovna. We’re not really enemies, but we usually end up on opposite sides at events at school, and we compete against each other at riding events. I guess you could say we are rivals.
However, the witch named Olesya, who tried to steal my magic, kill me, and have me as the entree for dinner, definitely qualifies as an enemy. She's serving time in the Lubyanka wizard prison. There's also Malyshev, her House Elf, who's an absolute psycho, who took some of my blood to start making gravy.
Pets: I have a Russian Blue cat named Serebro, and there’s Temny, my dark red Budyonny, who I ride in competition dressage events. My favourite boy has to be Nochnoy Ogon, he's raised from cavalry stock. I raised him since he was a foal, and I want to ride him in Cross-Country, but my coach tells me he's too big for me to ride. I’m hoping to take my cat and one of the horses to school with me. Surely there’s an equestrian team at Hogwarts.

History:
Childhood: Dymitri was born on April 16th 2053, at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow to Cian and Kitty Quinlan. Both of them had graduated from Hogwarts with the Class of 2047, with Cian being a graduating Slytherin and (then) Katya from Hufflepuff. Childhood sweethearts, they were married in 2050, with their first child being brought into the world roughly two years afterwards. Dymitri was brought into a household where he had a doting grandmother, Heather Quinlan, a retired teacher, and grandfather, Roderick, a well-regarded financial advisor. On the other side of the family, was a happy Reyna and Sergei Patrovna, who would offer to help out with Dymitri when their busy parents were otherwise occupied with their careers. His parents and grandparents made the point of nurturing in him a love of his twin Scottish and Russian heritage, as well as his Muggle and Wizarding heritage.
School Years: Dymitri went to one of the local schools in Glasgow for his primary education, as Cian felt it important that he grow up around other kids as opposed to be homeschooled like many Wizarding children, and there was no guarantees he would be going to Hogwarts. As it worked out, there didn’t seem to be anything magical about him until shortly after his tenth birthday when he had a magical accident when he was out and about with his Aunt Faina. Rather than be upset, his aunt was delighted, as were his parents.
Out of an abudance of caution, it was decided to pull Dymitri from primary school, and finish out the term having his Russian grandmother tutor him. It wasn’t long afterwards when his letter from Hogwarts arrived.
The Sorting Hat:Joining your family, you are not. Your care for your friends, And your go get 'em attitude, Makes you perfect for...
GRYFFINDOR!
First Year: Okay, I really wasn't expecting a talking hat to tell me what House I was in, and my thoughts on the subject of which House it would choose was either Slytherin or Hufflepuff, since that's where Mum and Dad went, and the idea of being in Slytherin had a certain appeal, just to be able to annoy my super-uptight cousin held certain appeal. Gryffindor; you got to be kidding me. On the other hand, there was a certain sense of satisfaction being in the rival House carried with it too. It also meant I'd play against him on the pitch, assuming I could make the squad.
Well, the Gryffindor Quidditch Club has a long proud tradition, after all this was the crew which featured freakin' Saint Harry Potter (well, maybe not Saint, but ye' know the Gryffindors are talkin' the Vatican's ears off tryin' to make it happen) and more Weasleys than ya could shake a stick at back in like the olden days. Except these days they didn't have so much o' the proud goin', owing to a seasons' long drought in the win column. Seems this lot told Chudley to hold their pint for them and show everyone what really losing was like. We have a Seeker who can't seek and a Keeper whot can't keep. Yeah, this squad is well an' truly knackered. Mum kinda got pale at the thought of me goin' in for this, so 'ere we go, right? Tried out for Chaser and Beater, as everybody wants to be Seeker, except possibly the guy we got as our non-seeking Seeker. Met up with fellow Scot, Padraig Kincaide, an' he seems to be a guid sort. So, I made the team, Reserves, but who cares; Chaser ... an' backup ... Seeker .... hmmmm.
Mum said to be careful about clubs, as they cut into study time, so I tried my hand at the nascent Hogwarts Literary Society, as it doesn't meet terribly often, and not as stodgy as my cousin's Chess Club. They seem all right, but I'm thinking comic book storylines and graphic novels don't count as 'literature' in their minds. Have to see about that, and I'll be looking at other clubs too next year.
Well, getting into my studies was an adjustment, but it was better than having to listen to my grandmother doing homeschooling in Russian (she also said hearing my Scottish accent when speaking Russian made her head hurt). Having a class on Flying was fun too, as was having an Astronomy class. At one point they arranged for a pick-up Quidditch match, allowing the House to mix and match players. Pretty sure it was set up to help our Seeker out, but I canna confirm nor deny that one. Didn't get much of a chance to do anything in it, as I was a backup there as well, but at least I got to play. Seb got a win, too bad that was all there was to his wins; as the Lions dropped every match, an' it wasn't close in most of them.
Next year, I'm gunnin' for Seb's spot; he best watch out fer me...
Second Year: Well, I put in a nice showing at the tryouts, and did a nice job at contesting against Seb, but in the end, he won out for his position. It always seems like he does well in practice, but it never translates into success in matches. As it is, Seb is Seeker once more, and I am just a Reserve Chaser once more. Sadly, the season went as I expected it would, with me riding a bench, except for when I played in the spring scrimmage, and I figured we would bottom out, except Seb caught the Snitch in the last match, catapulting us to second place in the standings. The celebration in Gryffindor Tower afterwards was such, one would think we won the whole darned thing, and not our first match in like four or maybe five years.
During the year we found out the family was going to St. Petersburg for a big family reunion, and Kas has been tutoring me in Russian so I can maybe talk to my cousins and not sound like a drunken toddler doing it. I've also been reading Russian comic books to help me learn Cyrillic. Dad calls the whole thing 'Game of Crones', since the elder matriarchs of the Patrovna Clan are gathering, and I'm jealous because he isn't going.
I wish I stayed home, as I humiliated myself and Mom trying to introduce myself to the rest of the extended family, as I could barely speak Russian. Kas tutored me in Russian during school, and I supplemented my efforts by reading Russian language comic books and listening to R-pop (which is how I learned Japanese), and I used Google Translate to help me write out notes to handle the first meeting. To make matters worse, Kas apologized for me afterwards, and he and I had some pretty serious discussions. I make not like him any better, but he and I have an understanding of each other we didn't have previously.
Shortly after the start of the family reunion our cousin Natalya and a friend of hers went missing while riding horses in the forest near the Patrovna family seat. Apparently, this has happened before, and Natalya usually shows up not long after the search parties form up. So, Kas and I go looking for her, and we nearly get eaten by wolves before Aunt Faina found us. We didn't realize how much trouble Natalia was in until we found one of the horses, and then we found her friend in a clearing. Our cousin was kidnapped, and the three of us tracked her to the house of this Dark Witch. We almost died rescuing Natalya, when we were attacked by living freakin' zombies and a cannibalistic House Elf who wanted to kill us all and have us for supper -- as the main course. We were all pretty badly wounded, and Kas nearly bled out carrying Natalya, but we were successful.
So now, we're bringing Natalya and Kas back with us, but they'll staying with Aunt Faina's mother instead of our house, as Kas has on more than one occasion, because it's too dangerous for them in Russia, and Natalya is coming to Hogwarts. after all that, school ought to be fairly tame by comparison
Third Year: After nearly getting eaten by wolves and fighting the minions of an actual hag, going to school was pretty tame by comparison. This year, I decided to start following Kas' advice, perhaps because he was prepared to die to save me, you know, the guy who gives him nothing but grief for his efforts. So, I've started being more involved at home, with my younger siblings, and I've decided to be a better teammate at school and support the Seeker we have, rather than to subvert his efforts in a bid to take the job for myself.
With Roxie in charge, it's a new attitude, along with a pink passion; heck, even I've worn pink in support of her. Okay, I like pink too, but that's beside the point. I'm working harder at practice because I want my chance to start next year, when she graduates, and I want to be in that 'Vice-Captain conversation', especially knowing Kas thinks that I have talent enough to be noticed by the scouts who watch the matches. I managed to start one match in substitution for another player, and I made the first string for the scrimmage and had a good match. Nice thing though, we took second place in Cup standings twice in a row. Next year, we may finally get it, and I want Seb to be there to hold it up.
A really cool thing has been taking place this year. Last year I was mooning over Ella, the girl who co-founded the Literary Club, but then I started noticing Amilyka more, and we have much in common. We both like manga and graphic novels, she speaks Japanese, and we're both in the Astronomy Club, and I like walking her back to Ravenclaw Tower. Dummy me, I waited until after Christmas to ask her to the Spring Dance, next thing I knew, Kas arranged for his tailor to visit the school to have me fitted for clothes. The dude's shop is in freakin' St. Petersburg, Russia; part of it was because Kas genuinely wanted to help me out, and partly to earn back Baba's good graces after failing to teach me Russian. Seeing the look in Amilyka's eyes when we met at the dance was one of the best memories I have of my third year at school.
Fourth Year: It was nice seeing Adi and Pad in charge of the Quidditch team this year, and I knew the Lions were in good hands, but I was hoping I could get that VC job myself, especially after the way the Spring Scrimmage went. Seeing that Kas is graduating this year, I appreciate the fact that I'm running out of time to accumulate accolades and positions of responsibility of my own at school. I was also competing with Ceri to get the Chaser slot vacated when Roxie graduated. When I got the nod, I made a point of working to prove I belonged in my position. That meant facing Hes when the Snakes played against us at the end of the season, and I felt like the entire offense of the Lions was on my shoulders during that match. I really hoped we could finally win a Quidditch Cup for Seb before he graduated (I'm not sure I was alive yet the last time the Lions won a Cup), but it just wasn't in the cards for us this year.
The big event this year was the Winter Festival, right before Christmas, which Kas and Alice were co-running. I was expecting something like that formal Spring Dance like Bee and Charlotte did (this is Kas running things, so ...), instead it was a fun event for wearing ugly sweaters and getting to skate in a real rink outside the castle. Kas and Hes made for an attractive couple, and Talya looked so cute wearing a dress that looked like something from an old Disney cartoon. Taking Amilyka skating was so much fun, although I found out she was a much better skater than I, not that I care. Seeing her have fun and the look in her eyes was the best part of the night. Did I mention how pretty her eyes are?
Fifth Year is coming, and Mom is already riding me on getting ready for OWLs, and I'm also hoping that I have the chance to prove that I'm not a prat and can be trusted with responsibilities. If I don't earn a Prefect or get tapped to run a club, aside from OWLs and NEWTs my career at Hogwarts is all but written ...
