Having boy parts makes me a boy, right? I may not like it, but that's common sense, isn't it?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 25, 2017 6:06 am

Nope. If you see yourself as boy, you are a boy. If you see yourself as a girl, you are a girl. If you see yourself as a carton of orange juice... You get the point. The last one was a bad example, but however you choose to see yourself reflects on who you are, not what you were born with.

Gender is never something I've "identified" as. I've always referred to myself as a boy because the world decided I should be one, right down to my chromosomes. I've never enjoyed being a boy though.

Throughout my entire life, people would occasionally give me a comment about my appearance being feminine, and I'd secretly enjoy it. Whether it be something like commenting the length of my hair being "like a girl's hair", or that I'm "basically a girl with a deep voice", or even that one time my grandma asked me if I was on my period.

Even though I was "supposed" to be a boy, I just love being acknowledged as a girl. Nowadays, I have a job, and some customers will call me "ma'am" when they see my hair. I just can't tell you how happy that makes me.

I've always envied the clothes women got to wear. I felt left out. I wanted to wear what they do. Fortunately, I convinced my mom to let me buy some dresses and makeup. They're just so fun to wear.

I've even thought of a female name for myself. It just feels so nice to say. It sounds like this is my name, and a beautiful one at that.

I think I'd love being a female... If only I could be, right? Instead, I get disgusted seeing my male face in the mirror, and hearing my male voice when I speak.

You say that thinking I'm a girl will make me one? How so?

It's a little hard to explain how it works, but I don't identify as either gender. I have plenty of traits that people associate with both genders, but I don't let them define me. How you look and how you sound don't matter nearly as much as how you feel on the inside.

No. I'm saying that what you feel like is more important than what physical traits you have. It doesn't matter if someone naturally grows facial hair, or has a period, whatever gender identity feels right to them is what they are.

I don't really feel like anything. Seeing other biological males is a little strange, like I'm "supposed" to be them, but I'm not quite. I tend to be shorter, have a somewhat higher pitched voice, and have prettier hair than my male peers. (I guess that's why people may think I'm a girl from time to time.)

I know I'd rather be female, but I wouldn't say I feel like I'm already one. (I often wish I knew that feeling. It makes me sad that I'm so empty.) I don't feel anything about which gender I belong to. I only have what I like and dislike. What does that make me?

From what you've said, you might be non-binary like me. (Not being either gender.) If you had said you feel like both at different times, you'd be more gender-fluid.

I'm not sure what to think, my friend. I feel very confused about this idea of gender identity, unsure of what to think of myself as. There are many questions I have, and I hope someone like you would help me answer them all.

What is gender? I thought it was defined by physical characteristics. Now I'm being told it's all about feelings. In that case, what kinds of feelings define what genders? What must you feel to be male, female, or any in between?

Well, it's not so much that there are specific feelings tied to each gender. Stereotypes dictate that men are more prone to anger or violence, but that doesn't mean a woman can't deck someone if she's upset. Every person in the world is different, physically, mentally and emotionally. A person's feelings about how they see themselves have more to do with acceptance of how you feel than what emotions you experience.

To me, a boy is a boy and a girl is a girl but at the same time you can't blame other genders for being attracted to you as however 'they' see you.
Buuut I googled "boy meaning" ;

1. a male child or youth.
2. a man, especially a young or relatively young one.

Your conversation got me thinking about sex vs gender.
So I googled "sex meaning" ;

1. (chiefly with reference to people) sexual activity, including specifically sexual intercourse.
2. either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and most other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions.

I also googled "gender meaning" ;

1. the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones)

This lead me to googling "third gender" ;

1. a gender classification in societies that recognize a gender other than male or female.
2. a person who identifies as a gender other than male or female or as neither male nor female.

So I guess after all that googling, I would agree that you can only be m/f/o sex wise while you can be any gender you define yourself. So I guess you're both correct in different terms. Unless I didn't take all that in correctly or google lied to me, which happens sometimes razz

Another way to look at it is Biological gender and mental gender. 3nodding Sometimes the same, sometimes different.

Excuse me for wondering, but what defines mental gender?

Sorry I ask so many questions. I was born and raised in the south, so a lot of this information is unfamiliar to me. But let's see if you can teach this old-fashioned dog some new tricks.
