Growing up in the land of grass, she was raised by her grandmother after her father had been killed during the war, with her mother dying soon after giving birth to Shima, because of a weakness of body. Because her grandmother had seen the horrors of war herself, she hoped for Shima to never see violence and raised Shima to solve her problems without the cause for conflict. But this was not to be. Very soon, the land hidden in the grass was taken over by a group of bandits, that wished to ravage the land for its wealth and resources, including human slavery. though the village put up its best effort to send the bandits away, there where far to few soldier Shinobi's to put up a fight against the bandits, so the village closed its gates.The bandits where more ruthless to anyone that showed sign of resistance. That was how Shima lost her grandmother and last loved one.
Though, Shima and her grandmother where safe from the bandits as they resided inside of fungal forests that protected them from dangers, the forest was not able to provide for all of Shima's needs. The problem, was that the
bandits preyed on any who entered the village. Though Shima didn't know this at the time, both her and her grandmother where high targets because they possessed the Enoki Genkai, as the bandit leader wished to possess the genkai for there own use. The only thing that stopped him was Shima's grandmother. Because she also possessed the Enoki Genkai, she was able to utilize a special fungus that could sense the presence of any bandits that wished to attack them on the way to the village to get the medicine that Shima needed. Things went well for a while, as Shima's grandmother was able to keep the bandits away from them, and because she wished Shima to never see violence, always took care of the bandits in secret when ever they dared to attack, but she was old, and all of the fighting had its toll on her. She herself soon started to get sick. Though she tried her best to not show it to Shima, it became to much for her and she ended up bedridden because of the sickness.
It was during one of those days that Shima's grandmother died. Shima had been twelve at that time. With her grandmother in bed, Shima took care of her grandmother. At the time, her grandmother made Shima promise not to leave the safety of the forest as the forest protected them from the bandits. Though Shima at first did as her grandmother told her, she soon grew worried for her grandmother wellness, and broke her promise to her grandmother and left to try to make a run for the village. Though her grandmother had taught her well on how to stay hidden from the bandits, her genkai dormant. Though she managed to make it to the village to get the medicine that her grandmother needed to recover, the bandits got her on her way back, just outside of the safety of the fungal forest.
Bound and gagged, she was brought before the bandit chief, a vile man who wished to create an nation where he was king. His hope was to use Shima as a puppet to attack other nations. At first, Shima tried her hardest to not be the man's slave, but for three days, the bandits beat Shima when ever she tried to resist or couldn't produce her genkai. Though she tried to stay strong, but in her mind, her grandmother had been to weak in bed to rescue her and she thought her chances of being rescued wasn't going to happen. But she didn't know that was what the bandit wanted. Though she found out later, the bandits were really after her grandmother, so to steal her Genkai away, so used Shima as bait to draw her out. And unlike what Shima originally thought, her grandmother was truly a strong person, known in the past to wipe out entire cities, if it was her chose to do so, but she kept that hidden from Shima, so to never expose her to violence.
During Shima's imprisonment, she had run to the village soon after Shima's kidnapping in hopes to gain support, but the village couldn't. Shima's grandmother, in her weakened state, she ran to the bandit camp to rescue Shima. The worked her way through the camp, she rotted away any bandits that stood in their way until they came to the bandit leader, who was grinning in a giant chair when Shima's grandmother approached him. Shima at the time, was chained to the chair next to the man by a collar. He had hoped that she would stand in front of her so that they could finally speak. He told her that he had come to the land because of the powers. Shima's Grandmother came close to killing the man, when he pulled a knife on Shima's throat stopping her grandmother in her tracks. In exchange for Shima's life, her grandmother would have to pass on her Genkai to him. She agreed to the terms and the instance that the two shook hands, her grandmothers fungal genkai began to be ripped from most of her body. Though the man had gained the Enoki genkai, he was a vile man a broke his promise as soon as he had it.
Taking the knife, she stabbed Shima in the chest, puncturing her right lung. The man was about to finish her off when Several Konoha Shinobis swooped in and began to battle the bandit leader. It appeared that Kusagakure had asked for Konohagakure support in suppressing the bandits, and Konoha had answered. They battled the vile man, but many were killed by the newly gained power. Shima's grandmother, was crawling to Shima's side to try to heal her as best as she could. Using the last of her chakra as well as passing on the last of her genkai, she managed to seal Shima's lung shut, as well as jump start her own genkai. Shima using the power that her grandmother had given her, used her genkai connection to the man that had stolen her grandmothers genkai to begin to cause the man to rot from the inside out, before passing out from the blood in her lungs.
She woke up several days later, in the leaf village hospital.Though she was grateful to the ninja's that rescued her, she turned depressed from the loss of her grandmother. Her depression kept her bedridden for a time, but over time, she grew curious about the village and was allowed to explore the village. There her depression dissipated as she grew fond of meeting the people around the village. She grew happy with the community, but her happiness wasn't perfect. Not wanting to return to her village, she went to the Kusagakure leadership, to asked to act as a diplomat between the two villages in hopes of substaining a better relationship between the villages. Her leadership allowed it and soon Shima found herself a member of Konohagakure a year later, as a academy student.
