A Brief History of Unterheim

Unterheim as a complete nation has only existed for about 300 years, but it is the second largest country in the world. (Atlantis considers all oceans to be in their domain much to the chagrin of many other nations. Arguably Unterheim is the largest recognized country in the world.)

In its early days the realm that is now Unterheim was simply referred to as "the underground". It was a mess of clan controlled territories with conflicting laws and traditions. Clans were not necessarily made up of a single sprawling family, but of several families that came to gather to protect an area under a local ruler. Racial tensions also ran high with dark elves and various dwarven kingdoms clashing over cave systems.

Approximately 700 years ago Alfythyr Xalumoor, the son of a powerful clan in the present day Seventh Principality, with the help of his companion Sonobre began a campaign to end the fighting and unite the underground as one. Over the course of several centuries they achieved this goal, though not without fighting and hardships.

(I will probably expand and edit later but for now I'll settle for this just to get some info out there.)

The Royal Family

The Xalumoor family is Unterheim's first royal family and has set all of the current precedents for royalty in the country. Contrary to many surface monarchies these precedents include anti-bastardization laws and the allowance of partial abdication. House Xalumoor largely consists of Alfythyr's children and grandchildren although one branch does extend from his brother.

The Swords of Alfythyr

After Unterheim's unification Alfythyr's closest companion Sonobre was rewarded with the title of Sword. It was a position originally unique to him until he took Navarre Rain as his apprentice. (Now referred to as squire.)

The Swords of Alfythyr's primary job is to protect the king and his household. They often accompany him, the queen, and their children on outings away from the palace. Less publicly they have also assisted in raising a number of Alfythyr's children and serve as trustworthy confidants for the king and his family. A squire of the Swords must earn their promotion by saving the life of the King or one of his family members.

Although dangerous the position of Sword comes with many benefits including noble entitlements, a handsome salary, and a home in the Palace of Unison. (Swords may live elsewhere, but they are not gifted with land upon their entrance in to nobility so most thus far have chosen to live in the palace.)

Overview of Districts

Unterheim is divided into nine principalities ruled by the children of Alfythyr Xalumoor and one "royal province" from which the king rules over them all. These provinces are further divided by districts named after precious gems and metals. With the exception of the Royal Province the gold district is the core of each territory and encompasses the area around the province's capital. Each tier after is larger, and often poorer, with Quartz districts often being far enough away from a provinces center to reach territory arguably controlled by the surface.

The districts are as follows:

Diamond (Royal Province only)
Platinum (Royal Province only)
Gold
Silver
Emerald
Sapphire
Ruby
Topaz
Amythyst
Quartz

The Third Principality

Ruler:Faul Xalumoor

Palace:The Silicon Palace

Technology Level:Cyberpunk

Culture:Fast paced and sparkling the 3rd Principality is constantly on the move, looking out for the next big thing. (And when I say sparkling I mean its neon Tron-lights are so bright and common place here that folks from this province very often don't develop dark vision to the degree of those in other provinces.) Unlike elves the denizens of this province don't seem to move slowly at all, constantly changing their minds and trying new things. For all its gilded advancement and brightness the principality has a darker side. Class disparity is higher here than in many other provinces with a very small middle class buffering the small wealthy elite and the large swaths of poor people. And while things are changing for the better in many regards for the poor of the Third Principality for some more riotous denizens they aren't changing fast enough.

Commodities:The third principality provides technology of all varieties to the whole of Unterheim. Computers, vehicles, and appliances are common exports. The Principality also has a thriving arts scene producing lots of musicians, artists, and filmmakers.

Aesthetic:"Low fashion" often worn by poorer individuals and young people is very cyberpunk while "high fashion" is evocative of arcane robes worn by the gentry of the 4th Principality with a technological flare.

Religions:Nocturnal, Epirosian, largely atheist though

Common Races: Dark Elves, Dark Dwarves, Hill Dwarves, Merfolk, Scalefolk, Goblins

Common Languages: Dwarven, Binary, Novinskian
