He wasn't thrilled to be in California again, but he went here so often that it was just a necessary visit time and time again. Usually he didn't like being stationed in or around California permanently, but when called he never declined to be sent over to patch up whatever hole or douse any fire if he was tasked with the job.
He had a small roster from some colleges to assist in, some minor and some major, and he had gotten off the plane and started work shortly after. Getting onto the subway, he checked his tablet and punched in a few numbers before sending off a email to his local contacts. He made an appointment with a contractor to help with doing some paperwork that would give him clearance into a nearby building that was being remodeled and was used for a local fight that had done some heavy damage.
Holding onto the hand bar, he glanced up only when the voice spoke of the next stop to make sure he was on the right train.

Nuru stood in the middle of the busy subway as bodies jostled and bustled about. Several brushed up and then past him and those got the most intrigued look for their efforts. Humans were just so interesting. It was nice to examine them so up close as to be able to reach out and touch them. They didn't like to be touched though. He stared very fondly at a couple that managed to find a place to sit together and snuggle close. As soon as they'd noticed his gaze though, they were gone.
He felt empty. He needed... something.
That was when more people cleared out and he suddenly got a whiff of... not human. He followed the crowd that moved past them, discreetly blended in until he grabbed the closest handrail to them and stared. They were distracted by their device.
They weren't a demon either.
He stared a little more intently.

He could feel eyes on him, and looked over only to cringe and jerk his phone-holding hand up in defense at the gaze so intently directly at him. Looking around, he tried to gather if he had committed some social faux pas that he hadn't noticed or wasn't updated on, but no one around seemed to care or be looking at him so intently as the other man was.
"Um, pardon." He said, and decided to go down two more handlebars in case space was necessary. Sighing, he looked back at his phone and then checked his watch.

Nuru walked his hands from one handle to the other until he was directly next to Melvin again. He reached out a finger and placed it atop Melvin's phone and attempted to gently ease it down so it wasn't blocking his view.
"Ello dere."

He could feel the other moving towards him, and this time, he was paying attention. There was something about him that spoke of something inhuman, but it wasn't so strong to give him a handle as to what it was which didn't have his guard all the way up if it had been anything else.
His eyes went wide as the stranger placed a finger on top of his phone, and he watched with complete surprise to see the finger push his phone down. A slow, stiff turn of his head and he was looking back at the messy-headed stranger.
"...H-Hello. Please....do not touch my phone." He said, and he placed it close to his chest in order to protect it and shield it's screen from the other.
"Is....there something you needed?" Blue eyes narrowed his focus on him. Puzzling. This was puzzling.

Pretty? He glanced around and back at him, and tried to consciously not let vanity get to him.
He cleared his throat.
"Paradise was lost long ago. No place is that, but there is good to be found in any place if you work hard enough to improve it." He said simply as he pocketed his phone for the moment in order to fully address the man beside him.
"There has to be a reason you would live here after all?"

"Ah prefer da perfectleh imperfect." Nuru tried to explain in his own simple way. His smile relaxing somewhat at Melvin's apparent confusion at the compliment. "An foa da record, ahm talkin to you goldeh." A single eyebrow arched curiously. "If ets alrigh dat ah call ya goldeh."

"I suppose, but my name is Melvin. I can agree that imperfection is a great state of being in the process to perfection that must be worked upon regardless of the ability to achieve it. I do seeing the pursuit." He said and looked up as the voice overhead chimed in.
"This is my stop."

Nuru's smile twisted up in a large toothsome grin. "Well what are da chances? Ets mah stop too."
"If ya wan..." Nuru shifted to Melvin's other side and hung from that handle at an angle reminiscent of a child playing on monkey bars. "We can keep dis introduction goin?"

"I....suppose...so?" He said, not sure if this was typical or not. Well then, it didn't seem typical. It had not happened to him before. If anything, it was suspicious, but he had been nothing but civil to him thus far and so he had no other reason to be hesitant.
Well, nothing in the books to be worried about.
"You never gave your name."

"Nuru," he offered the hand he wasn't leaning into. He certainly wasn't typical but Melvin had yet to find out just to what degree.
Following strangers was simply the tip of his iceberg.
"Ya hungreh?" This time both eyebrows rose curiously.

He thought about it as he stepped out of the train and onto the station landing. "Hungry? Not particularly." He said, as he didn't really need to eat. It was something that just refreshed his host and gave him a moment of sanity.
"Though, if there is a decent place where the workers care deeply and work hard into every dish they make, then I am usually interested. I don't care for fast and careless." The workers who hated their job came off as an awful flavor.
"Do you not.....have anything to do, Nuru?" What exactly was his job? He never had a stranger just decide to follow him as most were either busy or suspicious. Mostly, he could brush past civilians without being noticed unless he wanted to be so this focused attention was peculiar.

Nuru brightened at Melvin's particulars. None of which sounded like a no. "Ah know jus da place," he looked very sure of himself.
As the train slowed to a stop, he crouched just a tad to courteously offer his elbow to Melvin as if he were a dainty maiden.
"Ah do and ahm doin' et. Can't ya tell?" He smiled lightly while suppressing his strong urge to laugh at Melvin's expense. He didn't get it now, but Nuru hoped strongly that he'd eventually figure it out.

Since it was offered and he wasn't one to be rude, he took the elbow and stepped out onto the platform, but felt a shiver at the contact. Something was not correct with his assumptions, and he looked at Nuru, confused.
"I...cannot tell." Though this was not just a simple answer to his question. He didn't know what Nuru's goals were, and most of all, what he was. There wasn't a particular arrow shining in one direction, which made him think of only a much smaller list.
"Do you.....assign yourself to any particular allegiance?"
