-----------------
It had been a few days since his last bout with the radaku pack. Callum had come away more sore than battle learned, so when the pack master suggested a new type of training he agreed. Today he was going to go out into the rain forest and bring back some new radaku for the pack. Young ones, hopefully, as those would be the easiest to train.
Callum was under no false impression that this would be easy. He had learned to fear beasts as well as respect them after being mauled half a dozen times. His body bore the scars to prove it, if any didn't believe that such a scrawny man couldn't hold his own against a pack. What am I doing out here?
He was alone, which was quite possibly his biggest mistake. If Callum had brought Nimueh with him then maybe, just maybe, they would have stood a bigger chance. Callum pushed through the foliage, edging around the large crimson trees with the tip of his sword. He wasn't exactly sure where radaku may den, or if they just roamed, so to say he was grossly unprepared would have been a huge misunderstanding.
Carefully he made his way into an open sort of area where the ground was littered in tracks. Something had been running here lately, very large somethings in very large numbers. Callum stooped over to inspect the tracks and when he looked up he saw three radaku on the edge of the clearing.
All stopped the same moment he did. They were lovely shades of gold that glistened new hues thanks to the lighting of the glowing mushrooms. He rose slowly, trying to not spook them, but it only seemed to put them on edge. As he reached for his sword they began to hunker, lowering their bellies to the dirt with a snarl. He stayed slightly bent, legs balanced and prepped for a quick sprint depending on which way they went. This time he would be the hunter; not them. It didn't guarantee a win, but Callum was dead set on being the aggressor.
Before they could get the jump on him, Callum charged. His blade was angled low, just skimming against the top of the ground as he moved in. When he raised it against the first radaku the beast seemed too stunned to strike back. He cut into it's chest, sending the howling beast down to the ground while it's companions moved in to circle him. It wasn't a grievous cut, just enough to keep the radaku stunned while he dealt with the other two.
They, however, were not as easily fought as the first. Callum spun, trying to catch one of the others unawares, but it moved in too fast. He was knocked onto his back with the creature pinning him down. The air in his lungs went out with a great exhale, one that left him grunting and struggling to push the creature off of him. The one atop him scratched at his flesh, tearing through on the area of his upper torso before he finally managed to push it off. That one, looking mildly victorious, ran off into the jungle and left it's friends behind.
The last remaining radaku who hadn't yet attacked Callum made up for lost time. It moved in, snapping only to dodge back to a safer distance. It waited for him to get to his feet, though not long enough for him to pick up his sword. The radaku dived in, snapping at his fingers and cutting through the skin. While a minor nick it was enough to surprise a cry out of him and cause him to drop the sword. He made the split second decision to take his eyes off the radaku in favor of getting his weapon, and when he looked up, ready to strike, the other had fled.
Now all that remained was the injured one. It was smaller than the rest, so Callum knew it to be fairly young. When it stood it favored one side, relieving pressure away from it's wound. Maybe he had done more damage than intended? Hopefully he hadn't maimed the poor thing, but from the way it was snarling at him Callum didn't expect to get close enough to check anytime soon. Still, if he was going to bring in radaku for the pack master to train he had to try. This was the only one left, the only one he had yet to defeat. Slowly so as not to spook it further Callum sheathed his sword and began walking slowly towards the radaku.
