What gave you the idea to use em? o:
So when I started college I was living with my mother who was like SUPER anti-anything-remotely-associated-with-divination-because-Jesus-says-no. And I was kind of re-embracing my Native roots and thus getting back to like Hawaiian religion which has a strong history of magic and divination (and like this was stuff I had done as a kid with my tutu). But like 1) that was kind of very obvious that I was doing a something and 2) like we believe all spiritual paths are effectively valid, so like I was also looking at non-Hawaiian magic traditions and thought tarot was really interesting but my Very Christian Mother (TM) had already given me her "Tarot is literally demonic, all the cards have demons, if you burn them there will be green smoke and SCREAMING" speech so I couldn't just have tarot cards in the house.
And like I was already in the habit of using random innocuous things in place of obviously spiritual things and I was a massive geek that did a lot of art so I could get away with claiming things were just Aesthetic. Anyways I had like MANY MANY pokemon cards and I used to actually play the card game with a lot of my friends, and my mother took minimal interest in my interests so she had literally no idea how his game worked or how the cards were supposed to be set out.
So I was like Ima just do tarot-type things but like with these pokemon cards. But like my mom may or may not've been semi-familiar with basic tarot spreads so like I made my own spreads? Like the big one was literally setting things out like we were setting up an actual pokemon game and then just reading the cards from that. The other ones mostly involved fanning the cards out in very particular ways that we could pass off as just admiring our collections/comparing which card was better.
TL/DR: I had a Hyper-Religious Very Controlling Mother (TM) and was in the habit of hiding many things and using what I had on hand. Tarot was Not Allowed (TM) and I just had a ton of Pokemon cards already in my possession that were #Approved.
