All I ever wanted was to make the smiles real. I felt that was worth the hurt and time it took to heal. ______________________________________________
It was hard to see her behind the stack of books she had piled on the table. Most of them were encyclopedias and dictionaries. Some of them were in multiple languages. Along with the books, there were at least three empty cups that used to contain coffee or tea. Aria currently had the only full cup in her hands and was taking huge gulps of it. Once she was finished, she added it to the collection of empty cups. Sighing she picked up the book she was currently working, which was an encyclopedia of animals found in the region. She had already gone through two dictionaries, and three other encyclopedias.
Just one more section and then I can read something from the fiction section, she thought. She had a list of fantasy books she wanted to read, but she also needed to learn as much as she could about this world. So, once a week she came here if she could and read through didn’t dictionaries and encyclopedias. She would also read online articles, but those were for when she couldn’t physically make it to the library.
When she first got here, she couldn’t read anything. Not because the language was different, it was actually similar to what was spoken by her race on Shadowfell, but she had never been taught how to read it. So the first few years she had spent time learning to read and write and it spiraled from there. They had so much knowledge on this plane it would be a shame to not earn any of it.
✿○✿
After ten minutes or so she finished the section she was on. Getting up and throwing away her empty drinks she made her way over to the fiction section. Hopefully there would be something interesting that she hadn’t read already.

Willa’s mind drifted off in her own thoughts. She contemplated on her decision whether to speak with Aria or remain silent about it. Willa stumbled a few times over meaningless things such as tiny pebbles on the ground, unaware that she did so. Willa has always been somewhat clumsy, not paying attention to less important stuff, but when it really matters, she is fully alert and ready to take necessary action. It’s her sworn duty as leader of the Vanguard. She must display leadership while on the battlefield. To remain focus through the chaos is crucial especially in her position. There cannot be any mistakes. Willa approached the library’s front entrance as she casually walked in. She noticed Aria getting up from her chair just twenty feet away. The distance between the front entrances of the library compare to Aria’s location made it difficult to confirm what exact object she threw away.
“I thought as much she would be here.” Willa thought. “I’m sure that object was probably her usual, perhaps a beverage of some sort.” Willa assumed. She watched Aria head towards the fictional section. Willa stood at the entrance, her arms wrapped around the journal as though giving a tight hug. The look of hesitation on her face could be seen. After a moment, Willa finally decided.
“I need to know the truth.” She thought, making her way to the fictional area. It didn’t take long before Willa caught up with Aria. Willa slightly coughed before she spoke.
“Pardon my intrusion.” Willa paused, thinking of what to say next. After a moment, she decided to get to the point instead of not wasting any more time. Social Interaction is not Willa’s strongest suit. She is more reserved type. It’s hard to understand what she’s feeling as she doesn’t announce it to people. She prefers to keep her opinions and thoughts to herself. Only when necessary, especially in battle will she speaks her mind. There are just a few people she would open up to when she needs encouragement or advice. One person in particular is Aria.
“I don’t mean to be so improper, but what do you know of Storm Shadow?” Willa calmly asked, opening the closed journal to the exact page that has the long, silk string still placed in between the pages. She made sure it’s the same message she read earlier. Slowly, she faced the journal in Aria’s direction, placing in front of her to take out of Willa’s hand.
“Any proposition as to what this means or has Storm Shadow not said anything concerning this topic?” Willa stood there, trying to show confidence, but inside she was terrible. She hoped she used the right words to avoid Aria getting freaked out by her being so forward. She does her best to hide her fear especially from Aria. Willa hopes Aria doesn’t notice her slightly trembling as she continued to wait for Aria to respond.

Aria scanned the shelves, looking for anything that she hadn’t read before. Sadly, that list mostly consisted of ones that just sounded boring. Maybe this one? She grabbed a book that had a dragon on the cover. She had heard about dragons on Shadowfell. Never seen any, but there were some that lived there. I wonder how similar they are, she thought. It would be interesting to compare anyway. It would be best if she could find another book, but at least she had one for he week.
After a bit more searching she decided that she wasn’t going to find much on this aisle. She was about head over to the next one, when she heard someone speak up behind her. Turning around she saw Willa. It wasn’t unusual to run into her outside of headquarters, but she seemed nervous.
Her face remained neutral when Will brought up the topic of Storm Shadow. Honestly, she was surprised that she hadn’t come to her before now. Not that she had much to tell her. She grabbed the journal anyway and looked over what she wanted her to.
Ah, I see what the problem is. She wasn’t sure what to do about it though. Mikaela had given her a brief explanation after she had gotten to know them a bit more. He also explained why Willa didn’t know much about the reasons behind her current circumstance. His reasons for not wanting her to know had their good points and bad ones. It’s not really my place to decide. At least not now. If it ever became a problem for the gang or citizens, then she would step in how ever she saw fit.
“I’m sorry. I can’t really tell you much, at least not about your questions for him. That is between you two,” she said, handing back the journal.

Typical Aria. She has always been this way since the day Willa met her. But still, not the answer Willa hoped.
“I understand.” Willa calmly replied, grapping the journal back from Aria. Willa turned her back towards Aria. Her eyes slowly begin to water. “I mustn’t let Aria see me this fragile. I have to be strong, not weak. Remember, emotion is weakness” Willa thought. After a moment, Willa wiped her eyes pretending to run her fingers across her hair to avoid Aria suspect anything as she faced her again.
“I ask but one more favor from you before I depart.” Willa paused, thinking hard of what to say next. It’s unusual for Willa to be so direct when it doesn’t involve fighting. If anything, Willa prefers not to inflict violence upon others, but she must do what she has to do in order to survive regardless how she feels on the whole thing.
“What is Night Shadow’s true name? If anything, reveal that to me. Surely, you must know.” Really blunt and unusual for Willa, but the determination on her face proved once more she wants to know. Perhaps this time, Aria can tell me even if a simple name.” Willa thought as she waits for Aria’s answer, still shaking a bit, but controllable.

Aria watched her take back the journal, obviously not pleased with the answer she got. Though that wouldn’t make her chance her mind. She would love to help ease her worries, but Willa’s situation wasn’t something she had experience dealing with. She didn’t want to accidently make things worse for her. Honestly, she should probably do some research on the subject, just in case she did have to step in.
Maybe I could tell her about him as a person? I’m not sure that would help though, she thought, watching Willa turn away. She was a little surprised when Willa kept talking. At first she thought she was just going to leave it be.
His name? I guess that wouldn’t be so bad? He might not be pleased, but I’ll deal with that later, she thought. He probably would come and yell at her whenever he did find out. She was sure Willa wouldn’t keep it a secret from him that she knew, or he might know as soon as she said it. She wasn’t sure how aware he was of things or if he was aware at all when he’s not in control.
“I don’t see the harm in a name. He’s name is Mikaela. Though he does mostly go by his code name.” She also sometimes calls him Mika, but never to his face. “Is there anything else I can help you with? Or do you have other things to attend to?”

Willa finds herself analyzing Aria’s response. “She knows more than she leads on.” Willa thought. Her heart dropped when Aria spoke of that name. Willa gasped. She stumbled back, but managed to catch herself due to a wooden table behind her. While she leaned against the table, her face becomes a white pale color as Aria continued to speak. One simple word shattered her as she was not prepared for it. Willa was in shock for those few moments unable to hear the rest of what Aria said. Her mouth slightly opened unable to close them. Her body starts to become numb. Her head began to feel a tingling sensation, becoming lightheaded. As Aria finished talking, Willa remained frozen, staring blankly at her. Only thing Willa heard ringing in her head over and over again: Mikaela….
“I—I…” Willa whispered, barely able to speak. Without warning, Willa raced off, her left hand covering her mouth. She forced herself to swallow down her own vomit to avoid making a scene, let alone a mess on the floor as she head towards the stairs. The fictional area was on the second floor, where Aria and Willa are, twenty steps of stairs to be exact. As Willa made it to the fifth step from the stairs, she lost her balance. Her left foot just missed the step. Willa tumbled down the stairs, her head hitting each one on her way down, leaving small drops of blood behind her. The sound of the loud banging echoed throughout the library.
Immediately, it caught everyone’s attention. Willa landed hard on the ground before coming to a brief stop, her head looking up towards the ceiling. She was conscious at the moment, her eyes barely opened. Her face was slightly banged up with blood around her busted lips and cuts from her cheeks. Her left side of her head began to bleed, slowly forming a pool under her. She couldn’t move. Her body felt numb as though paralyzed head to toe.
“Mikaela..” Willa faintly thought. Her head leaned to one side, noticing her small pool of her own blood before she shut her eyes now unconscious. Slowly, she felt her mind drifting away. A moment later, her eyes slowly opened, but her vision slightly blurry. As her sight gradually became clear once more, she finds that she is able to move again. First her fingers, then arms, toes, legs and finally her entire body. Little by little, she managed to sit up in a sitting position. Her eyes stared around, noticing herself still in the library, but no one around. Disoriented, her hand touched her head before pulling away to find that there was no blood nor on her clothes or face. She stared at her hand in confusion.
“Little One, Little One, what have you done?” A familiar voice calmly asked. Willa’s head jerked. Her eyes widen in shocked. There sitting at the top of the stairs was Mikaela as he stared at her with a slight smirk on his face. Willa gasped.
“…how…” Willa whispered. Mikaela stood up, gradually making his way down the stairs towards her.
“Quite the predicament you find yourself in, love.” Mikaela calmly replied with his deep male voice. His face remained serious. As he approached her, he sqant down, his face close to hers.
“Perhaps it’s time I ascend back onto the throne for the time being, wouldn’t you agree?” Mikaela smirked.

As soon as Aria saw her back away and her face go pale, she knew that she messed up. She tried to reach out toward her, in hopes to maybe calm her down, but she took off before she could. Oh no, this is not good. What should I do? Follow? Or would that just make her more upset? Her thoughts were cut off when she heard a crash. “s**t,” she cursed under her breath, and headed in the direction Willa had left in.
She wasn’t sure what she had expected the crash to be, but Willa lying at the bottoms of the stairs wasn’t it. Quickly, she rushed down the stairs to see how bad the damage was. It looked like she hit her head and there was some scrapes here and there. Also, she must have busted her lip during the fall. Cursing under her breath, she pulled out some napkins from her bag. It wouldn’t do much, but it was better than nothing. It wasn’t difficult to find the head wound with how much blood there was. Why do head wounds always bleed so much? She thought, looking at the small puddle that was on the floor. She would have to come back and help them clean that or at the very least apologize for the mess. They couldn’t stay here though.
She looked around and saw that people were starring at them. “It’s okay. I’ll deal with this.” She told them. Some of them still stared, but a few of them went back to what they had been doing. It was good enough. “Senka, come.” She said, not loud enough for anyone else to hear. After a few moments a large black wolf to materialize near her.
Carefully, she picked up Willa and set her on Senka’s back. Keeping a grip on her and the wolf, she guided them outside and around the side of the building opposite of the sun. It didn’t take much effort to slip through the shadows and into headquarters. They almost always kept a couple places dark in case of emergency.
Once she was there she set Willa down on one of the couches in the main sitting area. After she got her situated, Aria sent Senka to fetch a towel, which she pressed to her head. Hopefully it would stop the bleeding better than the napkins.
