Shiny, I did not see anything in the rules saying a guild member couldn't post a new topic, so if I'm wrong please correct me.

About two weeks ago my family got chickens!!! 4 beautiful little chicks that were just days old. We have 2 silver lace Wyandotte's and 2 gold lace Wyandotte's.
And my family now jokes that I am the chicken whisperer. The chicks will sit on my hand, perch on my finger, and they are my little buddies. I love hanging out with them.
Currently, at least until 6-8 weeks old, they live in a large plastic tub, like a storage tub, with a heat lamp above them as chickens body temps are usually around 100 degrees F. They have a water dish and food dish, and the tub has a layer of wood shavings at the bottom.
I change the chicken box every couple of days to clean out the poop. It all goes in our compost bucket outside, as chicken poo makes great compost.

So here is my question ladies: Does anyone else have chickens? If so, do you have yours tamed so that they will sit on your shoulder? Because I've heard they will do that.

Members are more than welcome to post their adventures of gardening and livestock.

My grandparents had chickens when we were little. I had one that would eat out of my hand. Didn't have it any more trained because grandpa wouldn't let me. You got your chickens for eggs I'm guessing? My grandparents had theirs for eggs and meat. They had rabbits too.

How are you liking and enjoying the little birdies?

Yes, we have our chickens for eggs. Wyandotte's lay about 5 eggs a week, which is great because we go through a lot of eggs.
They are the sweetest little things ever. My parents and sister are a little skiddish about picking them up. I just reach in, pick one up around the body, and plop it onto my hand or finger to get comfy.
They seem to know my voice because they will look at me while I talk to them.
We have had an instance of a couple of them having pasty butt. For anyone who doesn't know what that is, it is when the chick's butt is basically glued shut by poo that didn't come out all the way, and you have to clean the chickie's butt with a wet rag or animal safe wet wipe. Easy fix, but can cause issues if not caught quick enough.
I dread the day when an egg will get stuck in the behind of a chicken. Because I know that also can happen.

Okay, so we've had our little birdies about 4 or 5 weeks now.
They have quadrupled in size and have almost all their adult feathers.
They love love LOVE mealworms. Love them. Like, they will peck each other's eyes out to get to the mealworms we put in their brooder for them.
Couple more weeks, and they should have all their adult feathers so they can go into the coop. Also, the weather has to get warmer. It is the first day of spring and here in Missouri, we woke to stupid snow. neutral
