Not sure what kinds of things you're interested in crocheting, being new, but it seems a lot of people start off with washcloths or scarves - something where the (likely) uneven tension of newbie doesn't matter, but the item is still useful when you're done. smile
Amigurumi is my thing really - dolls and other toys. Felina75, our esteemed captain, is into scarves, shawls, oh boy you name, she's tried her hand at a lot of things. Hm, just like many other crafty folks out there - can't stick to just one thing! ^_^

Well, anything new is hard at first. What dolls have you tried so far? My best advice without knowing what you're specifically into: start with yarn, a hook that feels comfortable in your hand and that fits the yarn easily around, a relaxed mood when you don't have to rush to do anything else - such as chores and then! make a simple sphere.
Lots of patterns for free ball shapes online and many amigurumi start with a sphere shape for the head. Try making a few until you get a comfortable balance of tight stitches. Try stuffing so the ball looks good when you're done - nice and round without any stuffing showing through the fabric.
When it comes to crafts, or anything else, you have to build confidence a little bit at a time. Speaking of which, I must try to make paperclip jewelry some more. That has been very hard for me. crying
