Kaelan's home is far away from civilisation, out on a hillside that overlooks an 19th century farm village, built on a small island. The church was the only building still standing, the skeletons of the stone farmhouses the only hints that there was even a small village once upon a time. The only other building that stands is a very old little hut out by the huge lake that divides the island from the mainland. This hut is Kael's hideaway, as it seems to be a beacon for spiritual energy.

The converted church is a quaint little home which is surprisingly cute when you consider that the inhabitant isn't one for cute. It's simply laid out, easy to navigate and just enough space for two people to live comfortably together thanks to the master bedroom being up in it's own lofty overlook; even then it feels like the house is crowded. I wonder why...

The woman was indeed odd. A dreamer, in a manner of speaking. It was her eyes that had Kaelan most worried, her hauntingly beautiful eyes that felt like they could see everything about him, and he hated it already. Still, he trusted that Pandora knew what she was doing, and that she had lead him to this girl for a reason. It would have been easier on him if she’d had an imperfection, or maybe if she had been blind, but there was something about her that was tugging at his otherworldly strings. If he had her file, then he might have been more at ease, but the aura surrounding her… It wasn’t truly human. No, there was something different about her, something spiritual, or else he wouldn’t be in this wing of the hotel. Eyes behind his mask went wide as she held up a hand to stop him speaking, he watched Keishara retrieve a ragged teddy bear from under his pillow, and for the first time in a long time the man felt something within his body that wasn’t sadness or self-loathing. The fact she owned a teddy bear was rather adorable, and it just made his heart hurt more knowing where he was going to be taking her.

That was everything? Just the bear? Frowning, he was sure that had to be some kind of mistake, for who would leave a lady in such a place without clothing? Or any possessions to call her own? His expression relaxed to his neutral blank face when Keishara made it quite clear that she’d heard his introduction, and he nodded once to show he’d listened to her. Good, the girl could actually listen, that was a start. Again, the fair haired maiden surprised the male by stopping her train of thought to go collect something else. Some shards of glass from the windowsill. A curious frown this time crossed his face as he stared down to the glinting shards sitting in her palm. Dipping a hand into his cloak pocket, a black velvet pouch was pulled free and gently placed on top of the girl’s open palm with the glass shards.
"Before you injure yourself… and so you won’t lose them."
The last statement was a mumbled afterthought, the simple thoughtful statement making his stomach tighten as he quickly turned away before she could react. Kaelan fully expected the girl to comment regardless, but at least if she did, he wouldn’t need to look at her. He didn’t think he could right now, it had been many a moon since he’d been in the company of a female he could call pretty. Let alone one that was alive…

The walk to the entrance foyer of the hotel was brisk and quiet, the security guard accompanying them surprised that the man with the foreboding aura had such a pleasant looking ‘companion’ now. Kaelan wasn’t in any particular hurry to get home at the moment, there was still a number of daylight hours left before the sun was due to set, but the biggest predicament came in the form of Keishara not owning any clothes. Edith would be able to help with that, he was sure of it. That woman knew everything.
"I… Need you to take a seat for a moment. Please."
Again, the polite tone in his voice was clearly foreign in between the ghostly monotone, but it was a lot less forced than earlier. Knowing he was close to being out of the hellish building was a huge relief, even if to date it was the only place that seemed to protect him from the wandering souls he guided to their final destination. Approaching the clerk at the main counter, her smiling face made Kaelan uncomfortable once more.
”Can I help you today sir?”
"I… W-Want to finalise payment f-f-for a..." He couldn’t bring himself to say the word.
”No worries sir, can I have the file of the slave you have chosen today?” Well, s**t.
                  "I… Don’t have it."
”Oh, well, you should have got one upon arriving and filling out the survey.”
"S-S-She wasn’t in my list." Kaelan’s voice was down to a quiet whisper now, his eyes burning with annoyance. Why did this woman have to be so perky?
”Ah. Well, that is strange. How did you find her then? A guard shouldn’t let you into a random room.”
Irritation was starting to make Kaelan shift his weight on his feet and reply through gritted teeth. "My spirit guide showed me the way."
”... Your spirit guide?” The woman indeed looked surprised, and her perky tone dropped just a little to make the man suspicious.
Debating if it would be a breach of his contract with the Celestials that owned him to mould fate in his own favour, the security guard from earlier appeared behind the counter with a file in hand.
”Ma’am, the gentleman left the file in the slave’s room. His spirit guide was a bit too eager.”
Kaelan’s mouth dropped in surprise at the actions from the giant of a man helping him out, but the glazed expression of the guard’s eyes lead the man to believe that maybe his employers were helping him in some sick and twisted way. Regardless, everything ended up working out in Kaelan’s favour, and he walked back over to Keishara to get her to follow him out.

Stepping out the hotel, the clean air felt good in his lungs, and Kaelan stood for a moment in silence, looking around for a taxi to take them home. Well, honestly, it wasn’t going to take them all the way home, just to the docks to catch a ferry over to the island. It was a long drive to the docks, and while Kaelan didn’t mind it, he did have to think of the female he’d decided to take home with himself and Pandora.
"We’re.... Going to take a long drive… If y-y-you w-w-wish to rest, you won’t offend me."
Damn his nervous stutter to Hell. Huffing in an aggravated way, he flagged down a shining black cab in the hotel’s taxi bay and opened a door to let Keishara into the vehicle first. Barely shutting the door behind himself, Pandora slithered free from the safety of Kaelan’s cloak hood to plop herself into Keishara’s lap. The one repercussion of Pandora freeing herself from the cloak hood was that the hood was dislodged from his head, falling down to show his wavy hair in it’s bright, Irish red-orange glory. Freezing in place on the seat, there was no reason for Kaelan to hide his hair now, and he properly removed the hood and cloak, folding it in his lap. He wasn’t dressed in anything overly interesting, it was all black besides a midnight blue vest, but it only served to intensify the bright colour of his long hair. Well, long hair for a male, at least in Kaelan’s mind. Running his fingers through his hair, almost like any normal human being, there was silence for a long while before:
"I… Should warn you about my home."
Soft, ghostly voice piping up, Kaelan was staring at the divider in front of him, separating the front of the cab from the back.
"Well… Not just my home… But the town. I’m not well liked, so expect to be stared at… and don’t be surprised if they yell out at you. They’re ignorant folk, utterly stupid, but they’re just blind."
There was a scary bitterness to Kaelan’s quiet voice, his hands balling into fists on his cloak.
"Home is an island… An old church renovated years before I moved in. The townsfolk do not visit the island… Folktales from years ago have warped their views on it… It was an old plague church, a place where people went and never returned from..."
If Kaelan’s voice could be any more melancholic, it was at that point. Falling silent, a fleeting thought passed his mind. Keishara might have questions, and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to answer them yet. The city views were long gone now as the taxi sped down past open countryside, the views almost tranquil to watch fly past. Had his past been different, Kaelan might have enjoyed the views of farmland, but all they did was bring back terrible memories, the coastline still a couple of hours away.

She was thrilled by the present she was given and quickly dropped each and every piece of glass into this black velvet pouch. It's little strings that allowed the bag to be opened and closed were pulled nice and snuggly tight and she let it bounce slightly so as to listen to them tinkle against each other. The strings were also just long enough that she could slip her skinny wrist through them like a bracelet. She let it bounce again and in thanks for the gift gave him a grin. His worries were entirely unfounded, however, if she did say so herself. Why would he have to worry about her injuring herself? But she liked the black bag very much so that she wouldn't lose any of them. She knew the exact number of them all and would know pretty quickly when one of them went missing. Oh, but he wasn't paying attention anymore. He hadn't seen the smile. She followed after him and gripped his sleeve with her hand as someone would hold another person's hand.

"I like the bag, it is nice," she told him since her grateful smile probably had not been seen!

She plopped down in a chair when he spoke without so much as questioning the request. Instead, she looked up at him expectantly. When it seemed he would be doing something else and that was why she was supposed to sit, she went to paying attention to her new bag. She pulled it off her wrist, opened it up, and peeked in to see her pieces of glass. She was counting them quietly under her breath as he spoke to the clerk. She looked up every once in a while, more often when he began to sound irritated. But now it was time to go and instead of putting the bag back around her wrist, she looped it around her bear's neck like a neckless and quickly padded after him with her bare feet.

She had the bear tucked tightly between her crossed arms as he hailed a cab and she was nearly bouncing from excitement. It looked like a fancy car, not in the least bit intimidating, and anything new was worthy of fascination. Though he had been telling her it was going to be a long drive and it wouldn't offend him if she rested. She merely wrinkled her nose at the thought. What a strange thing that someone would be offended for someone else resting. She had a different idea of sleep than the rest of the world, though, and she hardly correlated "rest" with "sleep". Not that her sleep was restless but... well, it was in a way. She slept well but her dreams were alive.

So once in the back of the taxi, she made herself comfortable on the soft seat and immediately set to rolling down the window. Until she put it back up again. Pandora had crawled into her lap so the woman crossed her legs to form a little bed and set to stroking the feline's back. Pandora would make a nice pillow if she let herself be laid on or snuggled up into. But she wouldn't have too much room to lay down with the big man next to her. He probably wouldn't like someone in his lap or cold toes on his side. Though those thoughts were still running through her head when she noticed he was no longer hiding his face. That got him her absolute full attention. Except for the hand still resting on Pandora's head. What pretty hair. He was fixing it with his fingers in silence and she couldn't be blamed for staring, right? He'd been hiding himself before so it only made it all the more fascinating. And he was pretty, she decided. She especially liked his hair which she wanted to touch because it seemed like it would be funny to feel. Hers was perfectly straight, after all, and his was the exact opposite in nearly every way.

Of course that curiosity got the better of her and she reached her hand up to touch a lock of hair that had strayed past his ear. Barely any pressure but the pad of her finger rested against it with her eyes focused on what she was doing.

"Everyone in your town is blind?" she suddenly blurted, hand back where it belonged. She was looking at him with a look of utter incredulity. Not believing him at all and trying to decide if he were being mean or if he meant something else. He did call them stupid, though. She was a sharp contrast to his hands that were balling into fists and his voice that was quiet and melancholic. She placed her knuckles against her mouth as her brows furrowed and she thought this all over. Then her face relaxed, she nodded her head, and she smiled, going back to petting Pandora to try and get some purrs out of her.

"Do you know the stories?" she asked him. "People who know scary stories usually have night terrors, and night terrors are really very scary." She cocked her head to the side and snuggled Pandora closer, her brows lifting as she looked at his face. "You sound like you know lots of scary stories. Ben helps night terrors go away, though, since I'm not very good at making night terrors go away. They just suck you up until they spit you out when they're all done. Do you know what is better than scary stories? Yellow flowers. And big red buttons." A thoughtful pause. "Do you have any happy stories? I like hearing happy stories because they make good dreams and not night terrors. There will probably be lots of night terrors because of the scary stories the town people know. So could you tell me happy stories? Do you know any?"

▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀

It was strange to be around someone who was oddly comfortable in his presence. While he was sure that Keishara was more than distracted by Pandora, he felt like she was a dreamer in every sense of the word. While he’d managed to sneak a peek at her file while handing over the payment - something he was quite sure he’d never ever live down - he hadn’t read enough to fully understand what made her so different. A dream weaver, whatever that was. He’d have to do some research on that, but he had a pretty good idea what it entailed, and he’d have to set up some wards inside his room to shield her from his dreams. His mind was a most horrific place, and he wasn’t going to allow someone access to his horrendous memories when they were rather beautiful kind-hearted. Kaelan didn’t doubt for a second that the Council would want someone knowing of his punishment anyway, and he was so lost in his musings on how to protect Keishara from his mind that he didn’t notice her reach out for his hair. He did on the other hand, notice she missed his figurative speech. He’d have to explain that, after she voiced some other thoughts about happy stories and the things that made her think happy thoughts.

"I should explain something." His quiet voice barely drowned out Pandora’s purrs. "When I say the town is ‘blind’, what I mean is that… Um… They can’t see past the ends of their noses." Tipping his head back, his mask digging into his skin slightly, he stared at the ceiling of the cab. "What I guess I’m trying to say is… uh… they aren’t open minded. Th-The town is very stuck iin old habits and aren’t open t-to new ideas or thoughts. Because of my residence… They see me as the embodiment of the plague that almost wiped out their village so many years ago." It seemed like his mild stutter seemed to disappear when talking about darker things in life, and he dropped his gaze back down to his hands, the dark tone that overtook his more monotonous speech hung in the air before he spoke again. "I do not know many happy stories these days. I am the villain of most tales, I don’t think I have happy tales left in me." Again, the dark tone overrode his speech, and with a sideways glance at the female that spoke of more pain in his life than he was letting on, he returned to staring at his hands, ever grateful for the mask that crossed his face.

Unsure of what to say now, the car ride passed by in an awkward silence on his half, the man looking out the window as the scenery passed them by. How could he follow up on any questions she might ask now? How could he explain what he was, and how he became that? Kaelan knew he was a monster, the gold scarring on his body made that obvious. The mask only covered the physical ugliness; what would happen when the verbal and mental ugly began to show? He knew he was prone to snapping at the stupidest things, but he had to do this for Pandora’s sake. If another period of time came when he was gone for a couple of days, at least someone would be around to look after Pandora, and if he never returned… well, then a person sold into slavery would be free and Pandora would be cared for. Within ten minutes they were at the - thankfully - empty train station and Kaelan paid the somewhat nervous looking cab driver. Eye twitching slightly as the cab drove off, the masked man really wasn't happy now. He'd been as polite as possible to the driver, but still the man was afraid that something was going to happen; Kaelan was half expecting the man to say something utterly cruel to him. Rubbing the back of his neck, he reached into the pocket of his slacks to pull out his wallet. There were two tickets tucked away, pre-purchased ones, for the long train ride home. The train was a rather nice one, a mix of your typical passenger train crossed with a long-distance one with sleeping carriages. They had to travel all the way down the coast to get home, and it was a good few hours away. He'd paid for a nice room with enough room for two people to sleep in, and it was right by the dining car too.

"It’s a long journey by train, I… Do hope you find it comfortable and interesting. We’re the last stop at the coast, so uh… Feel free to uh, sleep i-if you like." Leading the way to the platform, with Pandora returning to her spot atop his shoulders, Kaelan wrapped his cloak back around himself, lifting the hood up to hide his face - and Pandora - from sight again. Thankfully it wasn't long before the train made it's presence known and pulled into the station, the strands of copper hair that weren’t playing nice fluttering around Kaelan’s face. Admittedly he was a little concerned for Keishara at this point: she was to be stuck on a train with him for a very long while, would she flee at the first chance she got before they reached their destination? The paranoia only made the man feel even more uneasy as they waited for the passengers to disembark before they could board themselves. As station guards stepped back to allow the passengers onto the carriages, one's gaze lingered on Kaelan. "Yes?" The masked man hissed, feeling the familiar hold of irritation thanks to intolerance creep up. Getting a mumbled “nothing” from the man, Kaelan helped Keishara up the steps to board the carriage, the familiar crackle from a radio reaching the Irish man’s ears - he didn’t need to hang around to know the guard was most likely sending a warning to the others about the hooded, cloaked man with a young, pretty female as company.

As soon as they were at their cabin, a squishy sort of space that could barely fit two small single beds, Pandora was out of his hood and hiding in the sheets of the bed on the left. "Um… Feel free to relax, I guess..." It was a muttered statement, the irritation somewhat evident in his voice now, and to an extent in his actions as he quickly pulled the blinds down to hide the train corridor from sight. Sitting down himself on the same bed Pandora was in, he slipped his hood off his head and let his orange hair fall around his face once more. Sighing heavily, he was about to ask Keishara if she had any preferences for food when a conductor knocked at the door. "Tickets please." Came the sharp response, the voice a touch too young for the guard that let them in. Wordlessly, and with a heavy sigh, Kaelan stood up and retrieved the tickets from his pocket, opening the door to a bored middle-aged man. If Kaelan had a dollar for every time someone registered shock or surprise upon their face at seeing him or his mask, he was quite sure he would have been able to move off his island home and live in a nicer place that was much more secluded. The conductor seemed unsure about something as he scanned the tickets, and his concern was soon voiced with a line clearly from a training manual. "For safety and security reasons, we ask that all hats, masks and helmets be removed while on board." The way the man’s voice shook slightly as he avoided the bi-coloured gaze of the redhead only made Kaelan’s anger rise up. While he knew the man was only doing his job, he couldn’t help what happened next. Lips pulling back from his upper teeth, Kaelan felt his body succumbing to his rage. Pushing the man backwards, Kaelan ripped the mask from his face, shutting the door behind him so Keishara would be spared from his violent outburst. "Would you want this face around children?" He growled, voice dark and menacing, all trace of his nervous, quiet monotone gone. "This is the face of a monster, so let the monster hide." Pushing away from the man who had only been doing his job, the ornate masquerade mask was tied back around his head while the horrified conductor just fled with a muttered "Yes, okay… sorry sir." Trembling, Kaelan was reluctant to return to the room that Keishara sat in. He couldn't trust himself, he felt ready to lash out, and the poor girl didn't deserve any of it, and with her inquisitive nature he was sure she’d ask questions. Taking a shuddering breath, he opened the door. "I need to go for a walk, please don’t leave the compartment." The hidden anger was making his voice waver in a most obvious way, but he didn’t want to put that burden upon the girl already. He was condemning her to a life of solitude with him on his island home, she didn’t need to see his issues on display so soon.

The only reason Kaelan found to return to the compartment was thanks to a food cart being pushed through the train. Stopping the plump older woman, he asked if there was anything on the cart that a young lady would perhaps like to eat. While his height and mask were intimidating alone without the addition of his hooded cloak, it seemed the older woman wasn’t as afraid of him as others were - a theme that seemed to show up when he was around people over a certain age. Maybe they could sense comfort in the being so closely associated with death? Handing over some money, Kaelan walked away with a box that had some sandwiches inside, and another with a few sweet treats (miniature lemon meringue pies and baby red velvet cupcakes with buttercream icing) and two complimentary bottles of peach flavoured iced tea. As much as he’d tried to insist that he didn’t need the drinks and that he was fine with the food, it seemed the woman had other ideas and a few assumptions about the secretive man. With a rather honest if not very silent thank you to the woman, especially since she didn’t pass judgement on his looks, he walked away feeling more embarrassed than angry now and went back to the compartment.

"Keishara? It’s Kaelan." Nervously calling to the girl as he opened the door, Kaelan let himself in, locking the door once behind himself - he didn't trust anyone on the train except for the food lady. Placing the box of food onto the lonely bedside table between the beds and against the wall, he put down the small bottles of the sweet drink freely given to him with a coy smile that hinted the old lady thought it was for a special lady. "I… Don’t know what you like, so I uh… Hope this is satisfactory. It’s just sandwiches and sweet cakes. I’m not fond of sweet things so… I hope you uh… I hope it’s okay." It was clear that the man was quite unsure of how to act right now, especially since he was feeling pretty sheepish for his earlier actions just outside the door. Unfastening his cloak, Kaelan draped it over the foot of the bed, and promptly Pandora wormed her way out the bed and into the warm, velvet folds. The smallest of ghostly smiles crept momentarily off Kaelan's face as he reached out for the box of sandwiches, a tuna sandwich being presented to the cat on a napkin, who promptly meowed loudly and tucked right in. Looking up to Keishara, Kaelan looked hesitantly at her collar. He still wasn't game enough to get in her physical space to take it off the poor female, but he knew that he wanted it off her neck. They were practically stuck on an island alone; where would she run? It was a horrid thought, but a true one. She had nowhere to go, and was basically forced to stay with him.

This thought made him feel even more ashamed for buying her. He'd practically ensured her fate with him.

ooc; I'm on a posting spree, wheeee~!
