Spamming attacks is frowned upon. People using laser locking or jab locking to rack up damage to the enemy is also frowned upon because that is pretty much spamming. Paper fans are a b***h, too. I've been in that situation and I hate it. There is pretty much nothing you can do about that as far as trying to escape. I like items but at the same time hate them. If you're losing against someone that uses items, use them back or find another means to win. Because if you're skilled then you should have no problem winning against someone who uses items. This however excluded that paper fan that shouldn't be in the game.
People who use items, you should practice without using items. You will become a better fighter in the game. A lot of characters have projectile attacks. Use them like you'd use items. I'm not encouraging just spamming them because that's no fun. But seriously the majority of characters have projectile attacks.
