A basilisk is a reptilian monster that petrifies living creatures with a mere gaze. A basilisk usually has a dull brown body with a yellowish underbelly. Some specimens sport a short, curved horn atop the nose. An adult basilisk’s body grows to about 6 feet long, not including its tail, which can reach an additional length of 5 to 7 feet. The creature weighs about 300 pounds. A basilisk relies on its gaze attack, biting only when opponents come within reach. Though it has eight legs, its slow metabolism renders it relatively sluggish, so it does not expend energy unnecessarily. Intruders who flee a basilisk rather than fight can expect, at best, a halfhearted pursuit. These creatures tend to spend most of their time lying in wait for prey, which includes small mammals, birds, reptiles, and similar creatures. A beholder, sometimes called a sphere of many eyes or eye tyrant is a large aberration normally found in the Underdark. These large, orb-shaped beings have ten eyestalks and one central eye, each containing powerful magic. Powerful and intelligent, beholders are among the greatest threats to the world. Beholders will often try to end a battle as quickly as possible, unleashing their terrifying abilities all at once. Among the most basic of these attacks is their deadly ability to project magical power from their eyes, in varying forms such as instilling fear, charming, knocking out, petrifying, disintegrating, slowing, or killing their enemies. Any combination of these is possible, although they often use only two at a given time. Twig blights can root themselves into normal soil and draw nutrients as a normal plant would, however they have a strong taste for blood that often forces them to waylay living creatures. Twig blights that live underground must subsist entirely upon blood, since it gets no sunlight for its photosynthesis. When it moves about its leafless branches interlock to create a humanoid shape. A twig blight attacks with its claws that deliver a strength-draining poison. Twig blights are very rarely encountered alone. They usually attack in swarms, attempting to overwhelm one creature at a time before moving onto the next. Twig blights usually stay away from any fire-wielding creatures. While they may not truly understand how vulnerable to fire they may be, they do have an instinctive fear of it. A bulette is a heavily scaled carnivorous monster that attacks anything it regards as edible, choosing the easiest or closest prey first. The only creatures it refuses to eat are elves (and it dislikes the taste of dwarves). When burrowing underground, a landshark relies on its tremorsense ability to detect prey. When it senses something edible (that is, senses movement), it breaks to the surface, crest first, and begins its attack. When cornered or wounded, the bulette "can strike with all four feet, though they normally favor the front two." Although heavily armored, the bulette had one weak spot behind its head that became exposed when it raised its crest during fierce combat, and was also vulnerable around the eyes. Bullywugs are a violent, marsh-dwelling, race of frog-like humanoids. They are half the size of a human, with leathery skin and webbed digits. They are very good jumpers, and can jump roughly 30 feet forward and 15 feet vertically. Bullywugs speak their own language. A bullywug can survive on land and in water. Bullywugs live in primitive groups, hunting and fishing together. The hierarchy is based on strength, with the strongest being the leaders. Bullywugs are very territorial, and mostly will attack anyone who trespasses. Oddly enough, they tend not to fight within the tribe, but rival bullywug tribes will fight with each other. Bullywugs rarely work alongside other creatures since they would rather use them for food or sacrifice. However, occasionally during hard times small groups of bullywugs will latch onto a powerful ally that can help them bring down tougher game. They respect no one but those stronger than they are.

A carrion crawler is a burrowing aberration that scavenges the dead and occasionally preys on living creatures. Similar to a giant, toothed centipede in appearance, carrion crawlers are large, pale yellow, and greenish. Crawlers possessed eight long tentacles protruding from the sides of their heads, allowing them to stun prey. Carrion crawlers also had two eye stalks, through which they could perceive their surroundings even in the darkest caverns. Additionally, carrion crawlers had a highly developed sense of smell. Carrion crawlers are often accompanied by a foul odor of death, which warned others of their approach. A chimera is a large magical beast that appears to be an amalgam of several different creatures, namely a dragon, a goat, and a lion. Although typically unintelligent, chimeras are self-aware creatures, with a limited capacity for language, often Draconic. All chimeras have access to an array of various abilities. Each of the heads is capable of a unique attack, but the most dangerous by far is the dragon breath of the chimera’s draconic head. The exact attack varies from one individual to another, as in dragons, with the type varying based on color. For instance, a chimera with a white dragon head would cast a breath of cold air, while one with a red head would bellow forth scorching flames. Chimeras' dragon-like nature often leads them to attack intelligent beings for their treasure and to live solitary existences in caves, though some take after the lion and live in prides. Cloakers are strange, mysterious, and intelligent aberrations that dwell in the dark and shadowed places of the world. They often make their home in the realm below the surface of the world, where they can use their abilities to manipulate shadows and produce terrifying moans to their greatest effect. Much like their namesake, cloakers appear to be cloak-shaped creatures. Their bodies, when unfurled are like those of a manta ray, but when relaxed, they appear to be a black cloak. The ivory talons at the ends of their wings even appear to be clasps. Cloakers will often use this disguise to surprise potential prey. The average cloaker has an 8-foot wingspan and weighs about 100 pounds. They are usually found in a flock of twelve or fewer individuals. Cloakers often wait in ambush for their prey and generally attempt to engulf an opponent with their wings. They also have the ability to emit a subsonic moan which can cause fear or nausea in opponents and can shift shadows to conceal themselves or create a mirror image. The cockatrice is a small avian magical beast. It is notorious for its petrification ability. Any creature that a cockatrice bites will be temporarily turned into stone. The effects wear off in about a day. Cockatrices are immune to their own petrifying bite and that of other cockatrices, though not of other petrifying creatures and spells. A male cockatrice has a rooster's wattles and comb, which the females lack. It has red glowing eyes. Cockatrices ferociously attack any creature that appears to threaten them or their lairs. Typically, flocks of them attempt to overwhelm or confuse their opponents. The couatl resembles a long, feathered serpent with a pair of rainbow-feathered wings that allow it to fly. They are around 12 feet in length, with a wingspan of 15 feet. They weigh around 1,800 pounds. Their powerful minds are capable of great psionic might. Couatls are known for their beauty, magic, and virtue. Due to their intelligence and devotion to good, they are worshiped by people who inhabit the same area as them. Couatls live solitarily, in pairs, or in flights of 3-6 individuals. Although they do not use weapons and armor as a human might, they often own treasure. They typically speak Common, and Draconic.

Allegedly, gargoyles were all originally made of stone, artistic monuments placed on buildings to help prevent the erosion of the walls of stone buildings by deflecting rain water. At some point, an unknown mage gave life to these monuments, who then became monsters. Their original nature aided them in that they are adept at appearing perfectly still, as if they are still made of stone, and their hides were rough and thick, similar to stone as well. They favored surprising their opponents, either by moving suddenly from their motionless state or by suddenly swooping down on their prey from a height. Gargoyles also loved to inflict pain. They would torture any victims they could hold helpless, going as far as eating them alive just to hear their screams even though they required no food to survive, but much prefer intelligent races over anything else. Inflicting pain gave the gargoyles pleasure. Sometimes, they worked for an evil master in exchange for some small amount of treasure, though their primary payment was the opportunity to attack intruders. Gnolls are extremely tall, with the average member of the race standing on average between 7' and 7'6". Though gnolls are relatively lean for their height, weighing in usually between 280 to 320 lbs, the race cuts an impressive visage. In part because of their height and lean musculature, gnolls are very quick compared with many other races such as humans. Gnoll skin is a greenish-gray, and their furry hide is light or dark brown marked sometimes with spots or stripes. Many gnolls also have a dirty yellow to reddish-gray crest-like mane that stands on end when a gnoll is angry. Though gnolls are not necessarily evil, the craving of the hunt and primal bloodlust that inhabit the gnoll mind make many of the race lean towards chaotic evil by reflex. Gnolls who succumb to this tendency often become nomadic savages, wreaking havoc wherever they can, giving gnolls their fearsome reputation as slaving brigands throughout the world.

A harpy is a maligned humanoid creature with an avian lower body and a pair of wings. It subdues its prey by its ability to magically sing, inducing a trance in those that hear, drawing them closer, and then tormenting them. Harpies have the appearance of female humanoids with grotesque, avian features. The hands and feet of a harpy end in long, sharp talons. Most harpies are unclean creatures, who have no regard for their appearance, though rumors even abound of beautiful harpies found in tropical lands, which boast the colorful plumage of parrots or other birds of paradise. They tend to wear little or no clothing, so as to not restrict their flying mobility, and what little they do wear usually consists of baubles and tokens stolen from the corpses of those whom they have slain. The hydra is a many-headed dragon that lurks in swamps. Simple and bestial, it is known to prey on anything in its home terrain. Famous for its regenerative powers, some even consider it immortal. As they grow older and more powerful, they grow additional heads, becoming much more deadly in the process. Hydras attack with their multiple heads, biting in a flurry of attacks that few can defend against. Hydra posses remarkable regenerative powers, growing more heads as they take more damage: for every head chopped off, two grow in its place, enhancing the damage dramatically. The regeneration can be halted with fire, burning the stump, and preventing more heads from growing.

A race of crow-like, wingless Avians that communicate through their ability to flawlessly imitate any sound they hear. They can only speak words that have been previously spoken so if you ask, "Is the cave safe?" A kenku might respond with, "Cave safe." Or simply nod their head. Otherwise, they have their own language composed of clicking sounds. These flightless people often form thieves guilds, referred to as "flocks" in major cities and quite often work as burglars, pickpockets, and assassins. Kenku have a fondness for things with reflective surfaces and will often steal such items. These crow-like people have avian heads with a large beak and glossy black feathers, which cover the body except for their clawed hands and the skin starting about halfway up its legs. The skin on these areas can range from dark grey to bright yellow. Kobolds are aggressive, inward, yet industrious small humanoid creatures. Kobolds are reptilian humanoids. A kobold stands between 2' and 2'6" tall, weighing 35 to 45 pounds . Their legs are sinewy and double-jointed. They have long, clawed fingers and a jaw like a crocodile. Small white or tan horns protrude from their head, and they have rat-like tails. Kobolds smell of wet dog and stagnant water. They like to wear red or orange garments, which are usually ragged. They are noted for their skill at building traps and preparing ambushes, and mining. Kobolds are distantly related to dragons and urds and are often found serving the former as minions.

A manticore has a vaguely human head, the body of a lion, and the wings of a dragon. Its long tail ends in a cluster of deadly toxic spikes that can impale prey at an impressive range. Manticores are fierce killers that hunt far and wide for prey. They work together to take down particularly large or dangerous creatures, sharing the meal once a kill is made. A manticore begins its attack with a volley of spikes, then lands and uses its claws and bite. Manticores posses the ability to converse in basic. In the course of attacking, it denigrates its foes and offers to kill them swiftly if they beg for their lives. A manticore will spare a creature's life in exchange for a tribute or sacrifice equal to its loss of food. Manticores fear and avoid dragons. The mind flayer, also called the illithid, is an evil and sadistic being, humanoid in appearance, but with a four-tentacled octopus-like head. These beings are feared for their telepathic abilities and usually are not without two or more slaves, mentally bound, to each individual mind flayer. They will back away at the first sign that it is not something that will be self-profitable. They prefer telepathic communication and will attempt to mentally dominate any non-slave, non-illithid they meet. They feed on the brains of sentient creatures and are thus feared. Every illithid has a small array of mind-affecting spells to take control of their prey. The mind flayer's mind blast is a 60-foot cone that stuns anyone caught within it. The mind flayer can also innately cast three mind-affecting spells: charm monster, detect thoughts, and suggestion. Normally, a mind flayer will use its mind blast ability to stun a few foes and then drag them away to feed. Once it has its victims, it will attach all of its tentacles to the head of its victim. Then, the mind flayer uses its extract ability to suck out the brains of its victims. The mind flayer uses its other spells mainly to enslave its minions and keep them under total control, as well as on the battlefield. Minotaurs are evil giant muscular humanoids with fur covered bodies and bull-like heads. Minotaurs are carnivores, but prefer the taste of human flesh. They love to dwell within maze-like caverns or ruins, where their innate sense of direction prevents them from getting lost. They lure travelers into their maze-like homes, where the minotaurs have the advantage over their unfortunate prey. Minotaurs are not highly intelligent, but posses instinctive cunning and are adept at ambush attacks. Attacks in the dark are preferred so they can take advantage of their infravision. Minotaurs can track by scent alone, and always investigate an unfamiliar scent. Minotaurs are fearless combatants, and only retreat if their defeat is obvious.
