Didero readjusted his sleeves for what was probably the thousandth time. He knew the visibility of his tattoo wouldn’t change his situation in any way if he was spotted by a prison guard. God, he was breaking into the Royal Alternian Punishment Pits. Didero kept having to remind himself he wasn’t just having another brightmare. At least in this version he was accompanied by two older trolls intent on helping him. Odette had busted him out of this joint once already. Didero tried to take deep breaths, but they came out fast and shaky, doing little to calm his mind.

He probably wasn’t meant to be calm, really. He needed to be alert to any sight or sound that could potentially lead their party to the lusii… or away from any drones. Didero tried to think positively of his adventure in the desert. Ganyma, he knew, was exceptionally strong. Odette mustn’t have been someone to mess with either if she broke into prison twice. And Didero…

Didero could communicate with pigeons? Kind of?

Didero pulled down his sleeve.

Odette stared ahead, working up her nerves. She had done this before, but it still frightened her. No matter what, it would be frightening, she realized. She just didn't want to be caught, what would they do with Didero, who had already escaped once? The thought made her sick.

She tried to compose herself. It shouldn't be more difficult than the last time, but then again she was without her team. Now her team was only a child, and a teen that she had no business trusting.

On top of that she had the most experience, so did that make her the leader? She was comfortable being a scout, but the leader? Odette bit the inside of her lip, readjusting her hood. Since when had it felt so tight?

Taking a deep breath, she faced Ganyma and Didero with her serious face. "I'm going to scout ahead," She said, voice hushed. Directing her gaze to an air vent close to the ceiling, she beckoned Ganyma over. "I'll need a boost," She said curtly. Was that too demanding?

"I'll take Siegfried and find where they're holding them," She added, patting the little featherbeast who poked his head out at the sound of his name. "Stay quiet, and stay out of sight." She instructed the two trolls, softening her features as she turned to Didero. The poor kid had it bad enough already, she was probably only making things worse with her stern attitude.

He was breaking in. Ganyma had no qualms with doing something for justice, but his recent stint against the government had weighed on his conscience. That all went away now.

Ganyma slipped on a mask before the group reached the prison, and said few words between their journey to Busthind. He was there, comforting Didero, but under the thin material of his opaque mask Ganyma was intimidating and silent. It was a mask he would wear for the Coliseum. Simple, covered his head fully with latched slots for his black-painted horns, and dark with faint grey markings leading up the front and sides. He was calm. He was focused. Ganyma followed Odette obediently, listening to her every word. She had done this before; it was undeniable that he couldn't afford to risk the operation.

Ganyma slipped quietly up to Odette and peered at the ceiling. He gave her a quick nod. Gracefully, Ganyma easily slipped his hands around Odette's waist and lifted her like a feather. He lifted her up, repositioning her so she could use his shoulder for a lift if necessary. Once she was out of sight, Ganyma ushered Didero towards the wall. "Here," he whispered.

He flattened into the shadows.

Watching Odette and Ganyma go at it with each other made their stoic professionalism all the more impressive. Didero was terrified, of course, but some part of him registered that if he had been watching such a scene unfold as an audience, well… It would be pretty damn cool. He committed the actions of the two older trolls to memory. Reminiscing, he felt, would be more enjoyable once he got his lusus back.

Finally Didero was starting to believe such an outcome was possible. He watched Odette flit up and away into the ductwork and turned back to Ganyma. Obediently, he too pressed himself up against the wall. What he lacked in tactical gear, he made up for in diminutive size, especially compared to Ganyma. Didero held his breath and let his eyes fall shut as he took note of their surroundings in the belly of the pit.

His eyes shot open. For a moment he was afraid to speak, but realized they only had seconds before it would no longer matter. ”Ganyma!” He hissed, grabbing Ganyma’s arm with one hand and pointing to the southern corridor with the other. ”Down there!”

A door at the end of the hallway opened.

You have encountered a Security Patrol!
Only trolls who are currently posting in the thread may join in the fight.
The mechanics work similar to regular boss battle, although this is classified as a mini-boss. (We are testing this system! Enjoy being guinea-pigs!)
Unlike regular boss battles, the mule will not be posting new rounds, and players can simply post as fast and often as they want, taking turns to attack one at a time.
Players who have trinkets or abilities may also post to use one directly after posting their attack, giving them a maximum of two turns for that round.

Each time every player in the fight has had a turn to attack the mini-boss once and use one power/trinket, a new round begins.

At each new round roll the standard 2d6 and use the table below to see what damage you've taken.
As always, the first number is what you should check for your damage, and the second is the amount done to the mini-boss.

Once the mini-boss or all players fighting it reach 0hp, this can be counted by all trolls participating as a battle rp for growth. If you have any questions, please PM the mule!

GUARD STARTING HP: (22 x 3) = 66 HP

As you hurry along, trying not to attract any unwelcome attention, you nevertheless fail to get past all the guards unseen. A ringing cry pierces your sponge clots - "Halt!" Two drones, clearly low-tier guards, come huffing up, one shedding a half-eaten circular grain product with sugary glazing. "This is a restricted area! You are under arrest! Put your hands in the air!" You don't want to weigh what your chances are of escaping from the Punishment Pits twice. Taking out a handheld transceiver, one of them barks into it. "We have intruders, repeat! Intruders!"
The other one shuffles a little, getting out a heavy baton. "Burtam - did you remember to put new batteries in?" At this, the barking drone pauses and squints down at his device, pressing the button a few times. "Damn. Uh. Hey you! I said hands up! Just because we don't have backup doesn't mean you won't be getting into a nice new pair of cuffs!" Raising his own baton, he nods at his partner, and the two drones advance on you.

If you rolled a 1, the two guards both decide to focus on you, and actually manage to wrestle you to the ground with your hands behind your back before you're able to shake them off. In your mind's eye, you can see the cell's door slamming back into place as you're thrown in again. Take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 2, one of the guards leaps at you in a frenzy, striking you over and over and over while yelling something about 'assaulting an officer of the royal army'. He seems to be forgetting which one of you is doing the assaulting at the current moment. Take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 3, a truncheon comes down hard on your head, making your eyes cross for a moment as chirpbeasts flutter around in front of your vision. Take 2 dmg.

If you rolled a 4, you charge forward and place your foot square on the food carelessly dropped by one of the drones as they arrived. The sugary glaze causes you to slide awkwardly across the floor, arms windmilling, before dropping you onto your rear. Take 1 dmg.

If you rolled a 5, You manage to duck and dodge all truncheon swings, nimbly slipping in between and around the two bulky guards as they flail at you.

If you rolled a 6, you consider these two drones, willingly working in a plant that is powered by enslaved lusii. What kind of heartless jerk could enforce the law, in a place filled with parents forcefully separated from their children?! Your next attack is loaded with righteous outrage, and does double damage.

When the mini-boss or all trolls have reached 0hp, please look in the spoiler below.

Mini-Boss at 0
As soon as the first of the guards drops to a knee, you take your chance and dart past them, ignoring the shouts from behind you as you leave them in your dust. You'd better get out of here before they catch their second wind! (Do not continue to roll 2d4s. If players hit the maximum of 20 points in rolling the 2d4, each player can now roll 1d100 in their next post. If you get a multiple of 10, your troll has snatched a 3 use novice trinket of your choice from one of the guards as they fled past.)

Players at 0
The two guard drones are more than a match for you, and you call a strategic retreat, running until you can't hear their footsteps or shouts anymore. Looks like you will have to find another way around to get past. (Do not continue to roll 2d4s)

"Damn." Ganyma placed himself directly in front of Didero, protecting him from the oncoming guards. They were enormous and bulky. He'd wrestled bigger -- he'd escaped death from opponents far more adept than the two of them combined. He snarled under his mask and wasted no time. Ganyma charged. If anything, Ganyma's tactics would buy Odette plenty of time to return before things got messy.

Dodging and dipping, Ganyma was surprisingly nimble. His agility had been improved steadily since working at the ring, and with a quick bladed uppercut to the jaw of one of the drones Ganyma drew first blood with solid satisfaction. He stepped around to the side of the two, drawing them away from Didero. He'd been outfitted with weapons, but was he ready to fight?

Ganyma does 5 damage!

HP: 20/20

This was it! Every one of Didero’s brightmares were being realized that night. He was almost relieved to get this dark carnival over with so he could at least stop being afraid of an unknown.

Ganyma’s quick reaction and quicker charge was enough to buy Didero time to fumble a knife out from his bulky sweater. Holding a weapon, sadly, made him feel no safer than he would have been unarmed.

However, Didero’s sense of security wasn’t the priority. If he couldn’t be safe, he could be useful. Relative to Ganyma, Didero didn’t even register to the guards as he easily avoided the main skirmish and delivered a swift stab to the back of one of the guards. The standard-issue body armor made the attack less than effective, but it sure was cathartic.

At the first sound of trouble, Odette kicked up the wind around her, shooting herself flying down the air vent. Spotting the drones heads at the end of the tunnel, she braced for impact, shooting out of the vent and grabbing hold of the closer drone's horn. Swinging around, she delivered a swift slice to the other drone with her glaive before dropping down behind them. She nearly tripped over herself, but caught the impact enough to slide back a few paces.

Worriedly, she looked over to Didero and then to Ganyma, checking for injuries. With a sigh of relief, she realized they were both fine. She supposed she hadn't missed much of the fight after all.

Ganyma whirled around as Odette swung -- no, flew -- down from the airvent. It took him by surprise. He'd nearly forgotten that she was an aerokinetic. Unfortunately, his distraction gave the patrol enough time to take a hefty swing at him.

A truncheon came down hard on Ganyma's skull, and he was silenced with a low grunt. The tealblood crumpled to the ground, and for a moment went limp. His neck twitched. The drones stepped over him, fighting his remaining companions over his incapacitated body, and suddenly he was back up again. A slice to the back of the leg and up the back of the patrol was the perfect opportunity, and Ganyma delivered with ferocity.

HP: 20/20

Didero may not have been as heavily-armored as his opponents, but he was fast. With the flashy, hard-hitting attacks of his companions drawing the guards’ attention, Didero was able to deftly slip under the swinging arms of his attackers. He knew at least one place where the guards weren’t armed. As one of the guards grappled with Ganyma, Didero slid down to the floor and sunk one of his knives into the back of the enemy’s knee.

Wasting no time, Didero pulled himself up and away before he could get stepped on. The hallway was becoming an absolute ********. At the very least their team outnumbered the guards… for the moment.

Finally face to face with the drones, Odette found herself terrified. The one came at her with a terrifying frenzy, and she hardly had the time to dodge after she was startled out of her frozen terror. The drone's club came down hard on her head, making her vision spin. Wildly, she thrashed in the vague direction of the drone, aiming to make any hit last.

"Red Swan!" Ganyma called out. His own thinkpan was recovering from its rattled state just in time to see her take a similar heavy blow. He slashed across one of the drone's thrashing arms, making him reel back in pain long enough for Ganyma to slip out of their range and take their attention. "Come at me!" He roared.

The masked figure skirted down the hall, away from Odette and buying her time. All the while, his feet flitted forward and back as more and more blows connected with the drones and coated his push blades with tendrils of blood. Finally, it seemed they were getting somewhere.

Didero wrenched his knife out of the guard’s leg. He stumbled several feet away as the blade suddenly came free, catching himself in time to see Odette take a nasty hit. Ganyma started shouting in response, pulling the danger away from her. Didero remained relatively out of the way in the scuffle.

Didero grit his teeth so hard his snaggletooth split his lip. “Scuffle,” Ha! HA! This was criminal, no, not even—that was the worst part. Didero knew about the orphaners. This was practically humane in that Didero at least had a chance to see his lusus again alive. Injustice upon injustice. Didero just couldn’t catch a break. The rebels were reckless fools and the royalists were cruel tyrants.

Well, then. If Didero couldn’t be “good,” then he’d much rather be a winner. With the guards still distracted ganging up on Ganyma, Didero dashed off after them. He pulled a fistful of daggers out of his sweater and swung. One, two, five daggers peppered the backs of the guards.

”Don’t you dare forget about me! I’M THE REASON YOU’RE GONNA BLEED!”

Odette stumbled backwards, trying to understand the situation she was in. Ganyma had called out her code name, and she turned to watch him skirt down the hallway. Was he... drawing their fire from her? Odette frowned, regaining a stable stance. "I don't need your help!" She protested, "You should be helping h—" Odette's voice dropped when she looked at Didero, the tiny greenblood unleashing all of his fury on the drones.

She was better than this. She was strong, too. Odette scowled, kicking up wind around her legs to leap at the nearest enemy, landing a hard jab in their shoulder.
