The Zoo

This once bustling and joyful zoo is now abandoned, like the rest of the city. A pack of Monsters lurk in the back, where the monkey's once inhabited. Now all of the monkeys are gone, only their bones remain.

Most of the zoo's animals have either escaped or been eaten by the Monsters that have made the caged jungle their home.

Grass has grown waist tall, making traveling dangerous, and hiding easy.

Some animals remain, but are quick to escape.

Rue leaned against the large O of the concrete word "Zoo". The grass was itching her arms. For raids, she was going to need a jacket, but the heat was unbearable. Thank God for short hair. What God? Her mother would be so disappointed if she knew her daughter's lack in faith.

She looked at her companions, "This is it." Different than you remember it, isn't it? she asked herself. "I'll raid a few of the guest shops for food, clothes, soap.. you two take care of the hunting. We'll meet back up here."

BB looked at this place and it somehow reminded her of that trip to Africa she and her family had taken her freshmen year. She smiled to herself of that small happy memory and wondered if the virus managed to get to Africa. Shrugging her shoulders she turned to Sid, "So how are we doing this?"

"Alright, Nancy. Get ready." He reached down and grabbed her by the struff of her neck.

She bristled and bared her teeth. A low growl started.

"Get set." He held the machete in his left hand, raised it. Then with one swift movement brought it crashing to the ground with a loud, metallic clank against the cement. "Get it, girl! Go!"

The dog let out as fast as her legs could carry her. She disappeared in the tall grass, rats and the like scattered in her wake.

"Alright, follow the bouncing mongrel. She knows what she's doing." Sid switched hands with the machete and set off blazing a trail of sliced grass and large booted footprints in the mud.

Rue watched Nancy disappear into the grass and was instantly glad she was not apart of that. She turned and jogged the other way towards the rows of gift shops.
She knocked on the door. She put her ear to the door, and listened for movement. Nothing... Nothing... Nothing. She turned the knob, unlocked, and knocked on the wall. She waited. Nothing. She looked for a light switch, but working lights was a joke.

She shut the door behind her, she'd be damned if someone would sneak in on her. She hummed under her breath, a song she used to sing to her kid brother as she rummaged through drawers. She saw a recyclable bag, the bags that cost a dollar to put groceries in, she scoffed at them them, but now she was thankful for the convenient bag. She shoved the papers in the bag, fire material. It would be useful eventually.

The racks were knocked over. But hats. Jackets. Over priced t shirts. She grabbed them and shoved them into her bag. She tried to avoid looking at the kid's section. But there she saw a stuffed lion, its stuffed body was on top of a pile, as if someone had left it there. She grabbed it and put it at the bottom of her bag. She stepped back slowly and looked for the back stage area.

She found the break room and stared at the fridge. There was no way she was opening that. She could only imagine what was in there... and the smell. She shivered and dug through lockers. Moldy lunch boxes, photographs of families. An opened bottle of water. She threw it in her bag. She ducked out of the room and looked out the window, she had a lot more stores to sift through.

She realized how much this place was marketed for kids. She was going to have a very long day.

It only took twenty minutes for Nancy to sniff out the small animal enclosure. There were dead animals all over, a few sickly rabbits remained. They were almost dead, hardly any meat on them.

A few minutes later Sid found himself staring into the eyes of a deer. It was a mighty buck, large antlers graced his head. Sid bowed to one knee. "This could feed us for a week, BB. Maybe longer if I cure and dry out the meat." He placed a hand on Nancy, gripped, then let go.

Nancy charged the animal, grabbing it by the back leg, just below the good meat, bringing the animal down.

Sid walked over with his machete and with one fatal blow decapitated the animal. "Ya done good, girl. Now, let's see if we can bag a few squirrels and get out of here before we meet with something we don't wanna meet with."

Rue

Rue quickly made her way through more useless shops. Fire material. Clothes. She needed food god damnit. Or soap.

She was in another store, closer to the panda enclosure. She walked along the wall, hitting the jack pot. Water. Bottled water. It was stacked under the broken computer monitor. Were other survivors here before? It would be smart... Food. Clothes. Walls.
She grabbed the seven bottles of water and threw them in her bag, hoping it didn't break.

She saw a restroom and could only imagine the scene that laid in there. But that's where you'll find soap. Her heart was racing, she really wish it wasn't.

She dashed across the wide path and straight into the female restroom, laughing at herself for avoiding the male bathroom. It was the apocalypse. She stopped laughing at the sight of all the blood on the walls, dead bodies against the stall doors. She knew now what happened to the old survivors.

But that meant... she heard a groan in a stall. She was frozen. Get the soap and get out. Get the soap and get out! Move Rue. MOVE. She shakily broke the soap dispenser and grabbed the bag of soap and dropped it into the sink. The moan was growing louder. She picked up the soap and broke the next dispenser. The living corpse started to bang on the stall. She broke the next one. One more and get out. She put it in her bag and she stepped backwards, keeping her eye on the stall. She backed up into the wall, she was sure if her heart could it would have run out of her chest.

The stall flew against the bloody wall and out limped a slow rotted corpse. Eight months and it still isn't normal. Fock those damn zombie shows, I don't think I'll ever be used to these...things.

She forced herself to breath slowly, pulling out her dagger, but continuing to make her way out of the bathroom. She wouldn't die in a public restroom. She'd rather die in a field of grass looking up at the blue sky.

It lumbered towards her. Once she made it outside, it finally charged. She dodged the attack, but took a defensive stance as it turned back towards her. It lumbered at her again and this time she stabbed it in its skull. It fell with a thud, and Rue stabbed it again. And again. Tears stung her eyes and she bashed in what little skull it had left.

She stood up and wiped the blood from her face. She had more stores to search.

BB watched as Sid and Nancy took down the deer. She was on watch, pointing her gun at literally anything that moved. It helped with her patience, she moved towards the deer, "So shall we cut it up now or should we worry about how we're bringing it home?"

Sid slit the animal down the middle and let the guts slip out. "Just field dress it, then do all the other stuff back at camp." He slung the deer over his shoulders, the blood running down his back and neck."Man, this thing is heavy." He started for the front where they came in.

Suddenly, Nancy started running, growling and barking towards the front. "Nancy!" He yelled after her.

He gripped the deer's legs tighter and took off after her. Just as quickly as she had started running she stopped.

There stood Rue. A dead zombie at her feet.

"Rue, are you okay?" He dropped the dear and walked over.

Rue

Rue wiped her knife off on her pants, pulling herself quickly together.
"I'm alive." she snapped at Sid. She eyed the deer, maybe it was a good thing to get out of the pet store. Letting people in was the best thing she could've done for her appetite.

"I don't know what else is out here. That's enough for now, let's head back." She held the bottom of her bag, remembering the bottles of water she was responsible for. Her heart was still racing, but she could cry when she was on watch. These times had no time for tears or weak little girls.

She headed back towards the entrance, she was walking fast. The faster they got back inside her store, the faster she could smoke on the safety of her roof.

Sid didn't press the issue and picked the deer up gain. He followed Rue to the door, weary of his surroundings. If there was one there was always the possibility of more.

He smiled at BB and winked at her. The day was hard but profitable. He couldn't wait to be back at warehouse.

BB watched the Nancy run off, and Sid follow her. She shrugged her shoulders and waited for them to appear. Rue walked out, a bit sulky but nothing really that unusual. She smiled politely at Sid and brought up the rear of the group.

((ooc: I'm just gonna post one big long thing because, well, I can.))

By the time Sid made it to the zoo he was completely drenched. His cloths felt like led as he heaved open the gate and strolled inside. He decided to check out the gift shop just to see what he could find.

The shelves were stocked, a few knocked over, with t-shirts and hoodies and toys. He could see his daughter now, reaching for everything. She'd be three now. Her dark hair would be almost to her bottom. The baby would be at least a year now, maybe two. Time had slipped away from Sid, as had his old wallet with his wedding photo and a picture of Lia in it.

Lia jumped on the bed, naked as the day she was born. Clair tried to catch her several times but she just kept going. "Come here. You can't run around naked all day, you have to wear clothes. Sit down, let me put your diaper on."

Lia screeched with laughter. "No!" and off she went again, bouncing and running.

"Need some help?" Sid leaned in the doorway, watching and smiling. He walked over and grabbed her round the waste. "It's very simple. Just reach out and grab em. Then tickle them till they squeel!"

Lia laughed as her mother wrestled clothes onto her while Sid held her down.

"See? Parenting is a joint effort." He smiled and put his hand over her growing belly. "I love you."

Something moaned. Sid drew his weapon and crouched behind a fallen shelf. He watched as the monster made it's way in, crashing threw and breaking the door. It looked around, it's hideous face that of a male.

For a second it looked around, smelling the air.

Sid put his broken hand over his mouth and watched in silent horror as it threw a shelf over it's head and yelled. It wasn't quite a groan but it wasn't quite human. What even are you, Sid thought.

It flipped over another shelf but, thankfully, was heading towards the other side of the store. Nancy would have killed this thing by now. His head would be at least five feet from his body.

Suddenly, out of no where, Sid sneezed. It sounded like an explosion in the semi-quiet room and startled the thing that was looking for Sid.

It groaned and yelled at the same time again and flipped the shelf that Sid was using for a shield.

Sid tucked his hurt hand and swung his machete. The head bounced and rolled away, the body hit the floor with a heavy thud. "God, in heaven, help us all."

"Son, are you sure about this?" His father fixed his tie and straitened his shirt. "There are still a few minutes left, I won't be mad if you run."

"No, I don't think I'll be running from this, dad. I love this girl with all of my heart." He smiled at his father, a tear fell from his eye. "Now, let's go out there and expand the family tree, shall we?"

Sid's father pulled him into a rib crushing hug. "I love you, son."

Sid hugged back. "I love you, too."

Sid whipped his blade on his coat, the blood and gore clinging to him like lent. "This looks great." He didn't know who he was being sarcastic for but it made him feel better to have a voice again.

He made his way into the brush again, following the same path he made earlier. There was an extra set of footprints in the mud. His, Nancy's, BB's and something else. "What the hell?" He wondered if these things were getting smarter or dumber.

The rain was slacking so he decided to head home.

((ooc: Okay, heading back now. Not that I think anyone followed me, just, ya know, end of post.))
