Clicking on this thread, your ability to post suddenly faded.

Yes, player, I'm talking to you. You aren't able to post here, see? Your character can't see what goes on here, at least for now. Maybe another time, but certainly not now.

This is your secret window, you see, something to let you see events that you otherwise you would not see unfold. Events your character may never know about, but you will. The story makes more sense that way.

But enough breaking the fourth wall. You want to know what this place looks like, and as the narrator I'm only too happy to oblige.

A town over from Justus lies an apartment building. Two of them have been rented out recently - 412 and 409. Fortunately, it's these two rooms you're interested in. Let's start with 409.

It's very dim in here, with light only coming from a few candles and a lamp in the corner. That's rather unfortunate, since it's also very cluttered. There are several crates shoved up against one wall, a shelf with assorted (and carefully labeled) ingredients and gemstones, and there's a very large cluttered mess of... something in the middle. A mass of wires, steel, and glass take up most of the room, with very little to move around.

Shoved up on the far side of the room is a chalkboard covered with complicated figures. Next to it, a mass of glass tubes and fixtures that any alchemist would recognize as a standard alchemist's workbench. A dark sludge bubbles in a sealed container.

Hmm, this room seems quite dangerous. I don't think it's a good idea to hover around here any longer. Besides, this isn't where the action will be taking place. Let's go there, shall we?

This apartment seems like it has people living in it; at least, that's what you assume from the three bunk beds in on room. The main room is surprisingly spacious, furnished with a few couches and chairs and a large flatscreen TV. The kitchen is well-equipped, though there aren't that many sets of silverware. Most of the furniture appears to have come from a discount store too, judging from the appearance and musty smell.

There's one room that's locked both magically and manually. A sign on the door reads "Do not enter~ L's Private Goodies! <3" There probably isn't anything of interest in there, but we'll look at it anyway.

Oh. Well. That's a rather impressive collection of weapons. Very diverse, too. All sorts of guns, grenades, hammers, swords, everything you would want in a weapons arsenal. It seems the people who inhabit this place are rather dangerous.

Too bad you can only watch.

Welcome to the Apartment!

The door to 412 opened, and Gisa walked in, deadpan after smiling for customers all day. It wasn't that she wasn't used to it, she'd been under cover before, but that didn't mean it wasn't a pain in the a**. Gisa stretched, back stiff, and on a whim peered into the kitchen. As she expected...

"Michael," she said. "How do you manage to get home before I do?"

Michael looked up from the large vat of penne boiling on the stove, still in uniform. He flashed Gisa a smile and wasn't surprised when it wasn't returned. It seemed, to him, that Unit 53 was composed of people who either smiled a lot or didn't smile at all. Michael belonged to the former group, as did his teammate lounging on the couch in the main room, but Gisa certainly belonged to the former. "I suppose I just finish my shift before you do, haha," he replied. "Dinner will be ready soon. Tyme should be back soon, they went to 409 for some peace and quiet."

The door opened again. "Speak of the devil."

Tyme shut the door, a pencil tucked behind their ear. "I don't appreciate being equated to a devil," they said breezily, stopping in the kitchen doorway. "I'm fried from filling up an entire chalkboard with calculus. Tell Thor if he touches the chalkboard on the right, I'll accidentally spill something acidic on his beard. If you need me, I'll be in the shower. Leave me a bowl in the microwave." With that, they headed for the shower. Honestly, nobody could stay in that room for very long without losing their head. If it were an ordinary lab, Tyme knew, it would've been closed down long ago. That s**t was frickin' toxic.

"Concise as usual," Gisa murmured. A moment later, she heard the shower go off. Well, that wouldn't be a problem. Tyme would be done in time for dinner. What concerned her was the fact that there were still so many calculations to write. She supposed it was more for Acwel's sake than their own, but still.

"I'm going to go change," she told Michael, "and finish up the admittance form. Call me when it's time for dinner." She left the kitchen and entered the bedroom, changing out of her uniform into much more comfortable jeans and a t-shirt. Picking up a piece of paper labeled Aᴄᴀᴅᴇᴍʏ ᴏғ Mᴇʀʟɪɴ Rᴇɢɪsᴛʀᴀᴛɪᴏɴ Fᴏʀᴍ, Gisa found a pen, settled on one of the bunk beds, and began to write.

Some time later, as Michael was straining the penne and checking the sauce, the door opened again and a man with dark, messy hair walked through. "You're late!" Michael called, scraping the last of the pasta from the bottom of the pot.

Acwel paused outside the kitchen, gaze focused ahead. "Recon," he said simply. "I was doing my job." Then he kept walking, maneuvering around the dining table and sitting on the couch, opposite the person already sitting on it. He stared blankly ahead for a few more moments, and then said, "Would you mind turning that trash off? Soap operas like this make my ears bleed." A few moments later, the volume of the shitty soap opera on TV increased. Acwel's ears twitched irritatedly.

"Play nice," a gruff voice said from the front of the apartment. Thor seemed tired, as usual, but a light twinkled in his eyes that showed he had something. He crossed to the table and dropped a thick folder on it at his seat, and then he sat down and waited. It looked like Michael was almost done cooking, anyway, and then they could gather.

Michael dished out six bowls instead of the usual five; Thor actually coming back to base lately was rare. He wondered what the crafty dwarf had come up with to get out without drawing suspicion, or had he drawn suspicion? A mystery for the ages. He dolloped some sauce into each bowl and drew his gun, floating all six up and down into place at the table. Satisfied, Michael cupped a hand over his mouth.

"Dinner's up!"

One by one, the six members of Unit 53 appeared (Tyme had a towel draped around their neck) and seated themselves. A lull came over the table as they ate, until all the bowls were emptied and magicked back into the sink (and Acwel had eaten a ridiculous amount as usual). With dinner finally out of the way, the debriefing could finally begin.

Gisa turned first to Thor. "It's rare for you to come around these days. Did you find something?"

Thor shook his head. "No. But I finished something." He opened the folder, revealing several pages of moving passages. It looked like the world's most complicated maze, and in a sense, it was. Passages overlapped and underlapped and kept shifting out of place. "I've completed mapping the Catacombs below the school. They're more extensive than I thought, and the whole damn thing is sentient which made it more difficult than I expected, but it's done. Naturally, I told the Council I'm still working." He slid the file towards Gisa. "I need them back, but I'll make a copy for you."

Gisa took the file and skimmed through the pages before nodding in satisfaction. "Good work. Michael?"

"Nothing to report, really," Michael said in an apologetic tone. "The police are completely mundane and the Council blocked off the entrances in the jail cells long ago. Everything is business as usual in the back alleys, too."

"Recon," Acwel responded simply. "The Organization may prove to be more annoying than we thought. There's a few local members that are very good."
