Do you remember zOMG? Did you play zOMG? If so, what was your favorite place in the game and why?

♪♫ I remember it. I loved it. I'd stopped playing for a bit (I don't really know why) and when I wanted to start up again - they shut it down.
I don't know if I had a favourite place, because I didn't make it very far. but I remember doing that doll instance thing a lot.

I do remember it, and I think it's kind of one of the things I'm a little bitter over, because we'd waited so long for it (it was one of the "exciting upcoming features" Lanzer talked about at the Gaia panel at AX in 2003 -- and he really did seem excited when he talked about it, too), when they finally announced it was almost done and they needed beta testers, we almost couldn't believe it. Of course, most of us weren't really into gaming all that much anymore, but still. I guess, when they removed it, it left a kind of feeling like "why am I NOT surprised... ******** it's especially bitter, because I'd finally gotten all my rings up to 10.0 and was working on the jungle area... Otami, I think? And I never did get to see the last area. emo
I had kind of started to enjoy hanging out at Bass'ken Lake at night, though, going after the giftbox monsters. xd

I know. I've heard that they could fix it but the cost is too much at this time. I wouldn't mind starting all over if they would just bring it back minus the security glitches. cat_3nodding
The furthest I was able to get was under the sea to get to the last boss battle but I ended up not completing it. My lag was so bad that I always died before the screen even loaded. cat_rolleyes It was so frustrating having a still screen and hearing all the battle going on and knowing you were being killed. lol.
The Lake was fun. The music there was a little grating at times. I think you had to be in the mood for that music. lol. I loved battling the wolves over and over again. cat_3nodding And Papa Saw. lol.
I hated the cyber prairie dogs. The were invisible. Ugh. I always died. Then when I had all rings at level 10, I came back just to take them down. lol. I loved orb farming on the beach. That was a lot of fun. You just had to shot the orbs with arrows. heart

LOL I nearly always have my speakers off, unless I'm specifically watching or listening to something... what can I say, I startle easily!
I remember Qixter saying he was very much a start-up guy, that he liked to build things and get them off the ground, then hand them over and move on. I got the impression that he was getting pressured to be lead for the zOMG system, instead of training people up to take it from there. But the people assigned as support for zOMG were developers with a range of duties, and they just didn't have the time to devote to learning how to do the back end work. Months went by, and finally Qixter either got an offer that was just too good to pass up, or he himself got completely fed up. Maybe both. Either way, when he left, all that was left were a few people who knew how to do minor maintenance stuff -- turn the holiday themes on and off, cycle the servers, not much else.
But yeah, as I understand it, the bottom line is probably expense... there's no way that Qixter's services come cheap! xd

I miss zOMG something awful. All of it.
Posted: Sun Jun 28, 2015 8:56 pm
I miss it badly too. I did do the last boss under the sea, (with tons of lag of course), but never saw the end of Dead Man's Pass. In there was HARD.
I like Zen Gardens, the bridge especially with the Koi swimming around. I liked the beach where DuneSlam lived, you know, you had to hop the boat and get to his island. Mad battling!
Papa Saw was always fun, but BuzzKill was so difficult to beat. One spin, you're KO'ed. O_O Didn't like the preda pups either, but the special area where the lightning bugs snuck out was kind of fun. I think it must have been endless - it just got faster and faster with more and more waves. >.<'
Absolute favourite place - I'd have to say Zen Gardens - just so pretty. Remember the area where Uncle Kai lived behind the bell? And the cute mushroom house in Village Greens? It was a brilliant bit of game design and mechanics.

lmao. I had to keep the sound on. My lag was so bad I didn't know when I'd arrived in an area unless I could hear what was going on. It was really funny too, because most of the time I was hearing people reviving me. cat_rolleyes
Wow. Well, I just wish that is was as loved by its creators as much as it was loved by its players. I bet Qixter doesn't even have the time to mess with it if they could pay him.

Probably not... y'know, I have to wonder sometimes whether people who're hardcore developer types like that spend their downtime -- do they play online like the rest of us mortals, or would that just feel too much like work?
Oh, and I suppose it's long past relevant, but did you ever try pipelining?

I know. But they may really love what they do and never really see it as work. I have a cousin like that. He works for NASA, one of the few that got to keep their job. He absolutely loves his job.
