In my opinion many "mental illnesses" are merely excuses for those who haven`t the fortitude, courage or desire to face life.We all know life sucks (Women get to learn that early on..every 28 days in fact). So are these malingerers really ill or making excuses?

Yes, actually. They come in two kinds: pure psychological turmoil, or chemical imbalance (with or without the previous). I have the first form with depression, caused by supressed anger, and anxiety. They fluctuate due to various triggers (i.e., I became immensely depressed after watching an armaggedon special on the History Channel due to a great lack of feeling in control of my life).

Unfortunately, as with many other concepts, there are those who pretend to have such disorders in order to gain attention or feel "special". This is typically known as "teen angst", and is (for me) what seperates someone who is different or truly into the gothic culture from someone who is emo.

There are also those that become rapped up in their problems that they do not feel they can overcome them. Unfortunately, sometimes such individuals can be so wrapped up that outside forces cause little effects, and it would take a strong shock to jolt them out of it.

Chemical imbalances are also very hard to deal with, as it can be harder for a person to "pull themselves out of it" because their is a physical problem.

bull s**t
let me tell you something .
My brother is a so-called schizophrenic, and when he raped me he knew exactly what he was doing. These evil bastards just use their made-up illnesses to do as they please.

I think you've lost it, and you're just looking for scape-goats. Deal with your own issues before you start discussing such matters. You're letting one person represent hundreds of thousands; that is not a very mature perspective. It's comparative to the groups blaming the media for violence in children, as they do not wish to blame themselves for not being a part of a child's life and development.

And do not tell me anything, for you only know of one kind of "supposed" mental illness. I've experienced two, and seen many others in my friends and family, as well as discussed the matter with various types of doctors. So although you had a horrible experience, you do not own full soverignty on the subject as opposed to some others. My mother was raped as a child, and she is incredibly strong; if she can move forward, I have no doubt that you can. You need to just see that option.

Schizophrenia is no excuse for that. Many confuse schizophrenia with DID, or Dissociative Identity Disorder. This has also been known as MPD, Multiple Personality Disorder. If your brother suffers from that, then it would be slightly different and he would have known what he was doing, but would not have let certain parts of his concience intervene with his actions.
Schizophrenia, however, is very different. A person with schizophrenia, to me, seems the least likely to me to commit such a crime. They are generally very scared and nervous, and thus are not exceedingly dominant nor hasty. Sure, their thinking can be fogged, but their fogginess would not lead them to something like that.
I'm sorry for your misfortune, but it gives you no right to accuse all mental illnesses of being fake.
The truth is they just aren't. Many people in the world suffer from mental illnesses, and to say that hundreds of millions, maybe even billions of people are all just making up some little thing is ridiculous. My brother suffers from a disorder in which he has extremely different moods. Let me tell you, it is not fake. Some things he does are not things people in their right mind would do, and are things that he regrets later.
Sure, some people may fake that they have a disorder to get attention or something, but not all people with mental illnesses do that. Explain Alzeimer's Disease. My great grandmother had that, and there is no reason that she would fake it. She died of it.

It depends on the person. Everyone is different and not the same as you or I. We don't have right to pass judgement on what we do not know. It would be wrong to say that everyone doesn't have any problems because we do. Those problems can be mental depending on how that person is when they were born or what they went through in life.

I know several bipolar people - they are the farthest from faking it, and they try their hardest to participate in everyday life. Mental illness is a real thing - just because some people abuse it does not make it any less so for others.

Some of us are not faking it, we suffer each day confused
But there are probably some idiots out there that do fake it and they just make it worse for the ones that are really sick.

It's not the persons' fault or concious choice. Usually it has something to do with the electrical pulses in the brain not working correctly. Sparking randomly at their own accord, or not getting through at all.
