████████████████████████▐▐▐ In the Beginning...

There was Gaiaonline. A forum-based website where people could chat, quest, roleplay, and do all other sorts of things.
It took a few years, lots of artwork, plenty of coding, and a supporting community, but the site grew into quite a unique little nook.
It started with forums and a basic avatar system, but expanded into shops, a marketplace, and even a few mini games.
But the developers knew that the community would keep wanting more, and as the website expanded, they took a bold new step.
Talk of a battle system had been around for years, and it was a popular classic across the internet in the style of MMO RPGs.
So the developers took what little knowledge they had with an experimental platform, and decided to build something epic.

████████████████████████▐▐▐ The User Experience

Unlike classic MMOs where what you wore, your race, and how much currency you had determined your levels of game enjoyment, zOMG! had a very basic construct.
Users simply had rings which they "wore" (only in-game), and these rings endowed them with special abilities.
No need to master a certain class or worry about being in noob armor -- you could freely change abilities and wear whatever you wanted.
This appealed to many players and made the game much easier to handle, but also added to the uniqueness of it.
Added to this was the fact that there was no experience points. Instead, you got Charge Orbs to level up your rings.
These orbs could only be obtained from defeating the Animated (enemies) in-game.

So as a player, you started off being given some free rings and being told to essentially "go play with them". When it turned out that you could use them fairly well, you were appointed to go help save Gaia by defeating the Animated. At first, they started you off with just some simple tasks: running errands, spying on gnomes, planting garlics... But as you progressed forward, things became much more serious. All of a sudden, you were gathering information for men in black suits about Animated which were carrying transponders and trekking through the jungle to speak to two elusive twins who wanted you to kill a false god. You soon found that you could not do things alone, so you were taught how to form crews with other players in order to accomplish these tasks.

████████████████████████▐▐▐ The Storyline

Well, the manga will help you get a basic idea of the pre-story of the game. The Developers actually slightly altered the storyline of the game a few months after its release due to the fact that the beginning line of quests was unpopular to starting players, but here is a rough summary of it:

You start on a old subway train, riding to Barton Town.
There is only one other passenger on the train, who is a mysterious young man in glasses.
He gives you your first ring, and as you depart the train you run into some station hands in the Barton Sewers.
They give you various tasks to do around the sewers and you collect even more rings.
Eventually, you are given clearance to climb into the word above... where the game really begins.

Once outside, you are sent off to the Barton Regulars to help spy on the Animated and get you started on your destiny to fight them.
After completeing quests there, you move onto Bill's Ranch, then Zen Gardens, then Bass'ken Lake, then the Old Aqueduct, then Gold Beach, and finally Otami Ruins.
