The man
Who wore black and red armor
With long Black hair
And silver eyes
Walked through the desert
And shifted his gaze
Up to the sky

He let out a sigh
And fell to his back
And
Closed
His
Eyes

And the sounds
Of roaring wind
And the feeling
Of excruciating heat
And whipping sand
Slowly faded
As he fell
Into a deep, deep slumber

==========

The morning came
And the man stood up
To the same old sound
Of wind
And the same old feeling
Of the sun's scorching heat

One footstep
Two footsteps
The desert seemed endless

He let out a sigh
As he continued
Onward into the day
Or afternoon
He could
Not
Tell

So much time
How long had it been?
The one question
He'd never have an answer to

But despite his
Feeling of lonliness
He kept
Moving forward
Into the distance
Of what seemed
More endless
Than his life

==========

All he needed
All he wanted
Was a voice
Someone
Something
To tell him
He was not alone

But this was
Impossible

His steps were
Ever so lonely
So soft

And yet his feet
Carried the burden
He had within himself

==========

Days and days
They all continued to pass by
And the man's hope
Began to
Deplete
With each passing hour

If he turned back
He would have never known
If he moved
At all
For every place
Every direction
Looked just the same

Lonesome
Empty
Despairing
Hopeless
Were the only words that
Could describe it all

But he made a fist
And walked on

==========

Nights went on
And the man
Fell down
To his stomach

He cried out
And screamed
But not a soul would hear
A sound he made
For he'd soon find out
What he feared
To be true

"I just don't see why
I must be the one
To continue on
Like this"
He fell
Into the sand
And embraced it
Like it was the end

And slowly
It became
Wet
With
Dismay
As his body flopped
And he sunk

He sun down
Thousands of feet
Into his heart
And let himself
Cry out the sadness

But nothing would
Cure the hell
Of his immortality

==========

When he awoke
Time was lost yet again

He could not tell
If it was sunrise
Or sunset
But he just barely stood
And wiped the sand
That stuck to his face

Each leg he lifted
Was the weight of his sadness
And each step he took
Shook the Earth

The emotions sheltered
Behind a wall
As he looked ahead
With everything he could
And continued onward
As he clung to
What little hope
Remained
In
His
Soul

==========

Darkness fell
And he nearly
Fell with it

But he looked up
As a smile came to his face
And his eyes
Lit up
As bright as the fire ahead

The pounding of his heart
Could be heard for miles

He ran forward
Faster than
The desert winds
And jumped up
On top of the hill of sandstone
That overlooked
The most despairing town
Which tore his soul
To
Microscopic
Bits

And then burned it in front of him
Along with the fires of the
Cinder-filled town

==========

He fell to his knees
And covered his face
Like the fires did
The buildings
Of the town

"Please!" he begged
"Just call out!!!
Tell me if
You still remain!!"
And he screamed
As all hope
Left his mind
His body
His heart
His nearly nonexistent soul

"I just want it to end...
I just want
To stop being
The last one to exist"
He sobbed
Once
Twice
Several times

"Death, please
I just want it all
To be over"

A wind came by
A familiar wind
And a familiar touch
Came to his back

"Immortality
The eternal curse," someone said
"It goes on
And you live
Despite everything
Despite the end
Because for you
The end is just the beginning"

The man whipped around
And glared at the bony man
In his tattered black trenchcoat
Torn black pants
And shirt
And hollowed eyes
"Do not mock me!" he barked
As he fell down and continued
To sob
"When you
Must live this curse
You can tell me
How it is"

Death let out a sigh
And placed
His fingers at his sides
"I live it," he said
"And for one person"
He sighed
"And I
Do not wish
To see
Him suffer
One more second
Alone"

And the man's eyes widened
As he looked up
Into Death's

==========

"But I am..."
The man never finished
His words

Death held out a hand
And smiled
As he said
"No more
No more suffering
No more lonliness
And no more pain
Your curse
Can come to and end"

"Will I be alone?" the man asked

"No
You shall be
With the rest of humanity
Which has ceased to exist"

"So I am the last?"

And Death lifted
The man's arm
And placed his hand in his
"You were
And now
All humanity has ended
For all eternity"

And the sand whipped up
And the winds blew
And all faded from view

The man smiled
And whispered
"Thank you"
And he took his free hand
And wiped his tears
"Why now?
You denied me so many times"

And a new world faded in
Unlike anything
The man could imagine

"Because immortality
Only ends
When you have lost all hope"
Death replied with
"And this time
When you lost hope
Seeing me
Made you smile
And regain it
And as for me
Seeing you with that much hope
Restored mine
And reminded me
That you were not lost"

And both smiled
And embraced each other
Like old friends
Who hadn't seen one another
In thousands of years

So I had several versions of this idea over the course of a very long time. I first thought of a man who would fall in battle, and then mysteriously awaken thousands of years later in the future, where he'd be the last man to exist besides a book collector who collected whatever books he could find. He thought he was the only one who survived the apocalypse, so he took whatever books he could find from wherever for a reason I never really decided on. But then he would meet the man who awoke from his several thousand year sleep, and then they'd travel to wherever for however long and do whatever. You can clearly tell I never completed that story. sweatdrop
My second idea was something like my old short story, "Shiki's Sacrifice", but I was afraid this poem story would turn out too much like that. But I kind of just wrote and wrote and wrote, and it didn't turn out like that.
Instead, the entire story turned out to be so much different than I even intended, and I'm happy with that. I didn't realize it until I read over everything I had written what it was about. It's a man who shared the same curse as Death: immortality. Except the man couldn't handle the lonliness. He was forced to live through the apocalypse and hoped day after day to find someone else who existed so he wouldn't be alone. Over his journey, Death watched the man, and began to lose hope in him, thinking he was forever lost. But in the end, when the man lost every last ounce of hope, Death came for him, and the hope that the living hell for the man was finally over, it gave Death back his hope. And together, they left the living world and smiled at each other to know that both of them had shared the same fate and went through the same process at the same time in different ways. I found it to be a much happier and heartwarming story than I thought it'd be.
No, there is no reason for writing this besides a random thought that lead to it all. The first idea for the story I had actually tried to write about a year ago I think, and I ditched it after two days (no joke either. I literally deleted it from my computer after two days). And I forgot about it until a few weeks ago, when I thought of creating this. But I, being the lazy person I am, didn't feel like writing an entire story on it. So today I opened my Microsoft Word document and wrote maybe three words before just giving up and closing it without saving. Then I came here and remembered I wanted to write a story in the form of a poem. So I finally wrote this. And I'm happy with it. smile
That's just about all I have to say about this for now! I hope you enjoyed it!! Thank you for reading! biggrin
