Emiliah sat in the cramped, steel cage they had shoved him in, the cold stone floor beneath him freezing his fingers and toes. He still remembered when he was captured, how two or three men grabbed him from behind and threw a bag over his head. He had tried to fly away and struggle, but it only ended up hurting one of his wings instead. Luckily the damage wasn't bad, but it was still sore, and the bindings they had around his wings now weren't helping the pain. Now he had no idea what would become of him. Em just prayed that it couldn't be worse than living on the streets or back at the orphanage with that awful woman. He supposed that even if he hadn't been sold into the slave market, now that he was eighteen, he didn't have any place to go. He just hoped that if and when he got bought, it would be by a kind master.
Em sniffed, the cold air making his nose pink, as well as his ears and cheeks. His eyes were also red, but from crying, not the cold. The other kids at the orphanage teased him often for being so sensitive and such a "crybaby" when he was younger, so he had tried not to let the tears come, but even now that he was almost an adult, the situation forced him to retreat back into that little boy that was so timid and afraid of everything. He had to admit, he was afraid. He tried singing quietly to himself to ease his fears, his voice soft and shaky, barely audible to anyone but himself.
"She's mostly gone Some other place I'm getting by In other ways Everything they whispered in our ear Is coming true Try to justify the things I used to do Believe in you
Watching you drown I'll follow you down And i am here right beside you The lights in the sky Have finally arrived I am staying right beside you"
Before he could start the second verse, he felt tears well up again and stuffed his face into his arms, wrapping his knees up in them. Not even singing to himself was helping. Emiliah wasn't sure how much longer he could take in this place. __________________________________________________
