They say there was a spark of magic that hit that forest.
Animals who were previously content just eating and wandering around suddenly desired an education, homes, and money. Soon, animals were communicating with humans, dressing in human clothes and other than the obvious physical differences, were human.
A lot of humans were pleasantly surprised when their beloved pet was able to convey their love for their partner. A select few humans however got a piece of their pet's mind. Let's just say shock collars and tiny sweaters were no longer sold in their village.
Other humans were uncomfortable with the change. Talking animals meant animals demanding to be treated as equals. Animals having jobs makes it harder for humans to get hired. Who would hire a human security guard when you could have a bear?
It wasn't entirely approved of by the animals either. Cows weren't just going to pretend that they haven't been raised just for food. The animals who weren't being eaten weren't happy their offspring were going to school with human kids, and when young people are in the same place, they start developing feelings for each other. Neither group wanted their child to end up with another species, so something must be done.
A council was formed to iron out the issues between the two groups.
The decision was unanimous.
The animals are to leave and create their own village.
Pet partners were devastated. Imagine explaining to your family that someone who was basically a member has to leave forever. That's not to say that there was no communication between the villages, in fact, there was a lot of business between the two.
A few animals wanted more than just the village, and wandered all of Gaia for a place where they could fit in. Some found jobs in places like Barton and Durem. Most, however, settled into the Pawlands.
That was over 200 years ago.
