this felt like something to get some interesting discussion out of :3
when im asked i usually deliver edits, as long as its something i missed from the actual request but has any commissioner ever asked you to edit because of technique issues, or bad anatomy? its happened to me before that i cant help but notice anatomy issues in pieces i buy, but i feel so bad for pointing it out i just bite my tongue crying esp once the piece is finished... one might say that you're paying for it so you deserve the best but... gaia_spoons is fake gold really worth implying an artist's technique is sub par? gaia_spoons do you feel that being an artist yourself enables you to see these error better/entitles you to complain about them? gaia_spoons would you complain if the delivered product looks nothing like the samples? gaia_spoons would you refuse to pay if they refused to edit? gaia_spoons would you ask them to redo the entire thing because the anatomy is so off it makes viewing uncomfortable? gaia_spoons and if so, would you do it only for the hq art, or any offsetting art that came your way? gaia_spoons or would you do this for RLC only, or for RLC and gold?
just wondering ahaha, i was browsing my old art folder and found some examples of art i regretted buying a bit emo when i ask for edits its for the characters appearance, not for the technique per se because i dunno it just makes me feel bad crying but if it were rlc id make damn sure what i bought looked like the samples ahaha rlc is srs business it does annoy me that drawing has made my art standards rise crying i feel bad if i buy/deliver anatomically incorrect art nowadays...

ahh, well as far as giving edits, i really only do so if it's something that I personally messed up in the actual design. ex: I forgot to put a pink streak in a character's hair or something like that. If I do something like draw them in the wrong outfit or something, I do edits based off of the info I was given. If I was clearly stated that they wished for something else and I overlooked it, that's a fault on my part. But if they didn't specify, that's nott my problem. Like once, I had someone ask me to draw them a pony commission. After telling them that I had no experience in that field of drawing, they were so adamant about getting art from me, that I eventually offered them a drawing for half-price due to my inexperience. I went overboard trying to get info so I could do my best, and in the end, I produced a drawing of a pony that was so good for my never doing before, it surprised me. But after I showed it to them, they were complete meanie-faces! They said they wanted me to do it COMPLETELY over, because the pose wasn't manly enough. Even though I had ASKED before I started if they had a preferred pose and they said no!. So I just had a static standing pose.. I hadn't asked them to pay yet, so I just said forget it. If they would've been nicer about it, I probably would've fixed it, but I don't deal with people who are mean to me about stuff like that :c
and as for getting edits, I don't hardly ever ask for them. I have an OC who has tattoos on her face, and they're almost always left out, but I never say anything because I feel mean if I do >w<
As far as anatomy not being perfect, i personally think that anyone who asks for a correction on something like that is a meanie-butt. They know exactly what they're buying before they purchase, so it they see that you're for example: bad at drawing legs, they shouldn't expect perfect anatomy when they get their drawing. They should know what they're getting into before they buy, that's not your problem, hun c:
Also, as far as art not looking like examples, I'm guilty of doing that myself sometimes, but I understand that artists style's not only fluctuate, but artists have off days as well! So I don't really put as much attention to stuff like that.
As far as paying, I wouldn't refuse to, because although it may not have been to my liking, they still put all their time and effort into it, just as I would when I make a drawing..
The whole thing for me just really depends upon who I am dealing with and how they treat me c:~♥

I haven't had too much trouble with people asking for edits except when I mess up hardcore lol. Like this one time I derped so badly I drew an entirely different character. <_<;;;;; As for anatomy, I tend to notice them before the client does and I end up editing it myself without any prompt. Usually, I'm satisfied however. I tend to be more willing to do edits for RLC.
I actually have not bought art yet because I don't have a set character/design. Hypothetically, I would ask for a redo if the anatomy is incredibly off. But my standards are super high though. >_<;;;

oh my!! the pony thing was incredibly rude wow sad
also ohh maybe the fact that we draw too could let us understand that art is hard to do and nobody understands xD
Jushiji
ohhhhh i had that almos happen to me too, drawing an entirely different character xD luckily for me i usually show the sketch before cleaning it/colouring XD
and and wooow well, with your talent im sure you'd be able to buy the hq-est of the hq gaia can offer :3 <3
gaia_spoons is fake gold really worth implying an artist's technique is sub par? gaia_spoons do you feel that being an artist yourself enables you to see these error better/entitles you to complain about them? gaia_spoons would you complain if the delivered product looks nothing like the samples? gaia_spoons would you refuse to pay if they refused to edit? gaia_spoons would you ask them to redo the entire thing because the anatomy is so off it makes viewing uncomfortable? gaia_spoons and if so, would you do it only for the hq art, or any offsetting art that came your way? gaia_spoons or would you do this for RLC only, or for RLC and gold?
Ooooh interesting topic!!!
Okay so I've never bought art off anyone (I'm one of those weird artists that doesn't actively seek art of their characters) but from an artist's perspective, I'll do edits if I'm the one in the wrong.
I'm very specific with my request form (and I'm probably super crazy in that I never actually show progress updates to confirm poses) so the commissioner won't see it until the end and it's done and I rely on them filling out the form with as much info as possible so I will hopefully NOT make any mistakes. I've so far only ever been asked to change colours because sometimes I would get them the wrong shade so it would just be a minor tweak.
gaia_spoonsdo you feel that being an artist yourself enables you to see these error better/entitles you to complain about them? Yes it helps you see the errors but no, it doesn't let you complain about them. You would have seen their samples and should see what level they are capable of - if you still decide to commission them then you can't really complain because you're getting what they can do. Being able to see errors and point them out doesn't necessarily mean the artist has the skill to fix it yet.
gaia_spoonswould you complain if the delivered product looks nothing like the samples? It depends how far off it is - there are rules in the art shop section about gross misrepresentation. If the artist is being sloppy and their samples were super HQ then they are at fault as they should only be putting up samples of what they are willing to put time into. Sometimes style does fluctuate a bit but the overall quality should be the around the same or better as their other samples.
gaia_spoonswould you refuse to pay if they refused to edit? If the artist has made a mistake and doesn't want to edit, then I think perhaps a lower pay should be compromised or the artist should decide to give it to them as a freeb for messing it up. If the commissioner is the one who omitted details, it's not the artist's fault as they can't read minds. If the artist has created something as per the stated request, then the commissioner should pay in full.
gaia_spoonswould you ask them to redo the entire thing because the anatomy is so off it makes viewing uncomfortable? That sorta ties into the the other question about seeing errors better/complaining about them. You would have seen the samples and seen what they were capable of doing so should be able to see what they are comfortable doing.
gaia_spoons and if so, would you do it only for the hq art, or any offsetting art that came your way? gaia_spoons or would you do this for RLC only, or for RLC and gold? If I did make some horrible mistake then I would have hoped I'd seen it before finishing <_<;;; If someone complained about it... I'm not sure. If it was something super bad that I can fix, then sure, I suppose I would for my own sanity's sake. If it's something I can't fix at my current level, I'd probably apologise and just say that's the best I could do and perhaps alter the pose somewhat to get rid of the offending anatomy error. For Gaia Gold I suppose the reason I don't show sketches and stuff for approval is because... well... I don't take it as seriously as RLC stuff. RLC work I wait for feedback at every stage - sketches, refined sketches, line art, colour blocking and then the final render. Because I'm being paid for it and I want the client to get EXACTLY what they want. Gaia Gold... you give me the concept and leave it up to me to do the work but I'm not going to consult you every step of the way.

thanks for your input! 3nodding
i see so far we all agree edits are good as long as we made the oopsie xD i do wonder what would happen if we asked the same to non artist people, its never happened to me that i got a rude customer, but i have friends who have had trades canceled at 90% work because it just wasnt good enough for the commissioner :/ still it seems unbelievably rude xD but i dunno what id do myself if that ever happened to me xD
I've never had a trade cancelled but that would be a super big blow to your artistic self esteem. If the art was still along the same lines as the sample though then the commissioner shouldn't just cancel without a valid reason. They should at least compensate the person for the time and effort already spent.
I mean, Gaia is meant to be fun. Every one already has their basic art shop rules and stuff, similar to how in RLC you have your standard contract. Normally there would be a clause about cancelling on a job and still compensating the artist for the time and work already done. It's a bit much to have to carry that across to Gaia but it might be something artists should start putting into their rules if it's happened to them a lot. If it's in the rules then at least they have a case if they want to take it up with the mods.

Hmm from what I learned about business so far from my experienced sister, it's all about the client. You have to build up your own reputation by solving the problem properly. You could be a rude a*****e or a decent freelancer. If you respond decently, then your reputation would be less tarnished and the customer would not be able to completely ruin you if they wish to accuse you of being a horrible business. Best thing to do is calmly argue your position and hopefully get some compensation or just accept it. Screaming at customers will just produce some really bad results.
Luckily I had some nice customers who haven't gone and yelled at me for horrible work. I got compensation for work I have already done.

thats a very good idea right there, its not something ive seen in the shops a lot, heck, maybe just once or twice and when i read it it came off as a bit aggressive but when you think about it, if its stated its because its happened before :/ and yes really its a huge blow to self esteem, personally i wouldnt fight over gold, id just report them and go to my bed and cry xD but if it were rlc daaaamn *this is why i dont study art xD*

thats sounds horribly stressful sad its kinda like what they say the customer is always right i suppose... doesnt mean they always are, but sadly some people feel you should dance and do tricks if they wave money in your face not just art wise, im talking about the service industry as well ahaha do you draw for a living? :3 *respect*

gaia_spoons would you complain if the delivered product looks nothing like the samples?
A thousand times yes. I understand style changes as an artist grows but when a sample is shown to garner attention and draw the attention of costumers if the end result is nothing like in in terms of skill and/or style then I believe a customer has the right to complain for being misled.
Bait-and-switching is not polite or fair.

It is stressful. ;_; Just the way capitalism works sadly. I just know some things from various jobs and friends. It's all about the customer. They can easily ruin you. A few negative feedbacks and down you go. You want them happy so that they can attract other people. Meh. Reasons why I kinda hate and love people at the same time lol.
I wish I was a professional artist. I'm trying to get there part time but I'm actually heading towards Software Engineering/Support in college.

what would be the cut for you? :3 as in, what's okay, a style difference/bad day/it just didnt want to happen, and whats lol whats this nope? XD there was a certain shop some months ago that had on the very first page a beautiful drawing of a curvy girl, fullbody, beautifully shaded, about 700px tall and when the girl took the commissions she delivered unshaded, shapeless, waist-ups, about half the size she forgot to do my commission, and though i probably wouldnt have said a thing because im shy, i did feel dread when i saw what she was delivering :/
Jushiji
omg you're right, regardless of the position we all have to take care of our reputation :/ also ohhh software engineering, my bf does the same thing :3 he really wants to avoid freelancing because of the abuse potencial tho xDD :/
It's interesting because I wouldn't have thought real world practices regarding clauses and stuff to have to apply here on Gaia.
But yeah, such things I would hope would be avoidable. For one thing, communication should always be open between the artist and commissioner. If the commissioner doesn't like where things are going, they should politely and within reason ask the artist about it. The artist, in turn, should respect the commissioners opinion as they are the client.
It's a give and take industry and both sides should remember that even though it isn't real money, it is a transaction. Just as they can complain about the artist, the artist can spread word to other artists about that particular customer so they are aware of the personality and might avoid accepting jobs from them.
If you're doing the right thing by your clients though, it shouldn't be too hard to keep your reputation up. If they say something to upset you, take a step back instead of replying straight away while your emotions are up. Learn to distance yourself emotionally and think about it clinically if needed to hear the feedback and act on it professionally rather than reacting to it in a personal manner.
Again, this is Gaia Online though. Some art shops here are just casual for the artists and you can see that.

When there is a distinct enough difference that it looks like either a different artist drew the picture or that the artist clearly spent more than double the amount of time on their samples than what they deliver.
omg this is funny, i think the only time i ask for edits is when my bf's hair is drawn not curly because in chibi form the only characteristic that sets him apart from my ex is his curly hair xDDDD ((i like my boys tanned so sue me irl he's shorter more well built, less squinty, doesnt have a huge mouth, and his beard/eyebrows arent patchy but you guys know chibis xD *super awkward*
