- Unlike many others she has come to know, Rose didn't have a privileged childhood. She was born straight into poverty, just a baby on the streets with a mother who cared too much and a father who didn't care enough to stay. When she was young, her mother taught her what she would've been learning in school, had she the opportunity, along with skills required for life on the streets. Her mother tried desperately to get a job so they could have a better life, but she never succeeded and was shot in a drive-by when Rose was only seven.
Now completely alone, young Rose had to put her skills to the test and survive on her own. She had few things going for her: she was fast, small, and persuasive, but the rest of the world seemed to be against the young girl. She managed to survive on her own, until a day everything plummeted. She was beaten, raped, and left for dead when she was twelve, and that was almost the end of her story.
It just so happened she was left in an alley a couple of nicer teenage guys liked to come and smoke, and they found her that night. She was taken in by a family who didn't need any more kids, but they welcomed her as one of their own. She still wasn't rich, and the walls she built around herself from years on the street weren't torn down overnight, but she had a home.
Rose stayed with the family, who put her in school, gave her a proper name, and treated her like their own flesh and blood. She had trouble making friends in school due to the shell she had created, and was quickly labeled as a "freak" and treated as an outcast. After less than a year, she was transferred to a "better" school, and seemed to fit in a little better.
She slowly made a few friends, and, although they were all labeled outcasts, she wasn't alone anymore. She was fast in school, catching up and going beyond others in her class, but she still didn't feel she belonged. She was introduced to smoking by a guy she made the mistake of letting close to her, and, although the addiction stayed, he didn't.
A few days after her fifteenth birthday, she was visited at school by a gorgeous boy with dark brown hair and eyes. He did nothing but speak a few words in what she thought was Latin, and press his thumb to her forehead. A shot of pain flared through her head, and she passed out.
She woke up in the infirmary, and he was there once again, only to tell her she had been Marked and must go to the House of Night soon, or she would die. He left, fading into the shadows, and she found a mirror. Sure enough, a sapphire blue crescent outline rested in the middle of her forehead, covered by her bangs.
She took a day to say goodbye to the friends she made, the family she had grown to love, and the boy, her older brother, that had saved her in the first place. The only time her walls dropped. She built them back up as she packed up her belongings and left for the school. That was two years ago.
Rose now resides at the school, as all the other fledglings, but she has kind of kept in touch with her two friends and brother in the years past. At a school made for outcasts, she almost fits in, and the whole super long and strong hair and perfect skin stuff isn't bad, either.

- Rose used to be the girl who cared about everything and everyone way too much, trying to help others on the street when she was just a small child and didn't have anything to give. But she grew up, lost her mother, and gained knowledge on how people work. To protect herself, she stopped caring, even at such a young age. The young girl who only wanted love became the girl who only wanted to be left alone.
She built up walls around her feelings, locking everyone out. Even after her rescue, through the years of a family and few friends, the walls stay. In the two years on her own at the House of Night, the walls have only gotten higher and thicker. But if you get lucky, and find a door, or even a window, in a wall, crawl through. Under the walls and cold shell, Rose does still care, and will accept you for who you are.
But the walls are thick, and doors are rare. Good luck.
