If you don't have class and you need a quiet space that's not the library, this is the place to go.

The Study Hall isn't much to look at - a large room with four groups of tables, surrounded by chairs, in the four corners of the room. It's entirely unsupervised too. There's also a muffling charm in the air - if you say something, it'll always come out in a quiet tone, no matter how loud you try to be. It's meant to be like a library, except... well... without the books.

So, study away. Maybe you really do need to do work. Maybe you need to meet with someone and discuss things, knowing you won't be overheard. Maybe you just want to take a nap and your dorm room's too noisy. The Study Hall can be used for many things.

Just be careful when you finally walk outside; sometimes the transition from a muffling charm to no muffling charm can be quite jarring. And loud.

Welcome to the Study Hall!

Averill looked a little bit frazzled as he entered the studyhall room.
It is only week six? It feels like a whole millenium has gone by.. He inwardly moaned, dumping his bag, books and other assorted items onto one of the tables. It made a surprisingly soft 'whump' sound, and he blinked.

He rapped the table with his knuckle. It barely made a knocking noise- like some kind of mouse, timidly delivering pizza to a haunted house.
He laughed, and that was muffled too. If he had to guess, he probably wouldn't be able to hear his own laugh from just a few feet away.
"Wow. This muffling spell is really something." He commented to himself.

Charms this week had been hard- he had only just gotten the hang of 'bump' (and gained a few new bruises to boot) and they were already moving on! Not to mention the workload from the other subjects.
He was no longer surprised that the 3rd and 4th years seemingly spent weeks awake working on projects.

Averill sighed and pulled out his charms instruction manual, flipping to the section on tracing marks into the air. He just doodled, half flickering failed images onto the table, using his wand like a pencil.
This probably isn't how we're supposed to do it.. He noted to himself, but didn't care.
He slumped and rested his cheek on a hand, staring at the ceiling forlornly.
The first-years had never gotten that study group together like he wanted, and Vivian was still missing, and classwork was hard.
"Maybe I'm feeling too gloomy to study..." He remarked to himself, but stayed in the room anyway.

It was probably one of the few times Muna hadn't spent an hour trying to get somewhere. Maybe his time on school campus was actually amounting up to something; not that life without his wand was going any better after losing it.

Tugging nervously on the drawstring bag that was looped around his neck Muna quietly opened the door to the studyhall room. Bijan slipped past the crack in the door, arms crossed in impatience.
" Hurry up already, you're actin' like theres a sandcreeper in here." Muna rolled his eyes at his companion before slipping through the door, shoulders jerking in slight surprise when he saw Averill. Shifting the thick book in his hands -- it was rather odd, the cover only with a silver sigil on it -- he waved with his one hand before bending his fingers to speak. Bijan cleared his own throat, preparing to speak.

Hi, Averill. I didn't expect to find anyone else in here.

As if some kindly god had heard his wishes, the door opened and Muna walked in! Of course, it was just lucky, but if it happened again, Averill would probably start becoming a little more superstitious.

He waved to the other firstyear, and his eyes flicked down to a seat at his own table. He saw Bijans mouth move, but the muffling spell killed the noise before it got halfway accross the room.
Averill grinned and laughed at the silliness of Muna signing without any explanation, and wondered if learning sign language would be a worthwhile pursuit.
"Hey! Studying too?" He asked, realized his own greeting would have been muffled too, then attempted to write 'HI' in the air with his wand, using the mark spell.

It came out something like;

Ih

He frowned in concentration, attempting to write 'Join me?'

Sem nioL

Unbeknownst to Averill, his writing, though appearing the right way around and /almost/ legible, was actually backwards to Muna and Bijan.

Muna brightened up a little at Averill's smile, feeling a little less out of place in the quiet room. Actually it was....really quiet. Muna couldn't help but squint when he saw Averill's mouth move but hear no sound -- his ears perked up a little, stretching forward as if it would help to hear the other first year. It didn't help, and Muna felt a little concerned. As an elf he was really not used to being unable to hear, and it made him feel a bit disabled.

Which was kind of funny, considering he was a mute.

"Guessing there is a muffling spell." Bijan said from beside Muna. Now that they were fully inside the room it was a little hard to hear the fairy, too. Muna wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing.

The pair watched as Averill drew in the air, Muna staring with a bit of envy at the boy's wand. Muna waited patiently until he was done writing, pulling out his notepad from the satchel he toted. He scritched some words on it before making his way across the room to show Averill what he had written.

"Oh! Right!" Averill remarked, laughing at himself and shaking his head.
He bit his lip, and traced out 'IH' in the air. Except that Muna was now beside him instead of being in font of him.

IH

He grinned and crossed his arms proudly, then as the words quickly flickered out, he realized that it was still backwards.
"Gah!" He placed his forehead on the table in exasperation. He perked up pretty quickly though, sitting up straight again, and just trying to talk now, seeing as Muna was closer.
"I was trying to write 'Join me?' but, uh, my skills obviously need work." He explained, then peered at the book Muna was holding.
"Woah, which class is that one for? I haven't seen a cover like that on the prescribed books list!"

Muna laughed a little at Averill's mistake, placing a hand over his mouth to muffle the huffy sounds that resulted. He set the satchel and book on the table next to Averill's things, closing his notebook now that he could hear Averill. Sliding into the chair he turned to face Averill, holding his hands up so Bijan could see.

The fairy dropped onto the table with a 'thud', too lazy to continue flying now that there was a place to rest.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm really behind ever since I lost my wand

Muna side eyed the thick book he had been carrying, smile fading a little as Averill asked about it. He had kind of anticipated it since he had been carrying it around, but after the first incident with it Muna wasn't sure if he should be telling people about it.

Ah, well. It was Averill, and he was a friendly guy. Surely the Ekat couldn't mean any harm, he was just curious. That was the snake way!

                      ...Or something.

It's a magical storybook, Muna explained. Bijan was eyeing the book with a rather obvious look of distrust as he spoke for Muna, going as far as to inch away from it on the surface of the desk. I got it from the Merchant since he thought it was useless. It activates when you read it out loud but, uh, you probably shouldn't do that.

"Oh yeah! How did that happen, anyway? I've noticed you trying not to get noticed in any classes where we have to do like, wandy work." Averill tilted his head- knowing his friend was also behind didn't make him feel any better, but it was a change of subject. He'd been a little out of touch while scrambling to keep up with assignments and homework.
Maybe that was on purpose.
Thinking about Vivian being lost stressed him out, so he had been keeping super busy.

When Muna told him about the book he raised an eyebrow.
"Dude, if you're behind, you shouldn't be messing around with fairytale stories!" He scolded him, confused why his friend would waste time on something like that.
"I'm not a fan of fairy stories, uh." He looked down at the fairy translator, stopping himself to apologize. "No offence Bijan."
He continued, his voice taking a somewhat instructional and haughty tone "Manuals and textbooks are much more practical. Dont worry, I won't read your fictional bedtime stories."

So it had been obvious? Muna felt a bit sheepish at that. Luckily he had managed not to get called on yet, but the longer he was without his wand the more he despaired about charms class. Muna rather hated being more useless than his classmates. Err, well, after the scavenger hunt Shanta End and I accidentally managed to summon a demon. I threw it to distract it because it was going after Shanta, but then when I made it disappear it left with the wand. It was a pretty embarrassing story, and Muna ducked his head to stare at the desk to avoid whatever expression Averill would make. Bijan tsk'ed in loud disapproval.

"I don't know how they managed it, trio of goddamn idiots. It should have been literally impossible. I think the Tomas Dorms is sensitive to summoning or something. That Shanta and her ******** stupid ideas, it's a miracle you didn't get reported to the goddamn staff." Muna huffed a little sigh at Bijan's complaining; he had heard it a million times by now. Not that Bijan would ever blame him for the things that happened, but it wasn't exactly fun to hear somebody badmouth your friends. He knew it wouldn't stop Bijan from blabbering on, so he didn't bother saying anything.

Muna shrugged at the scolding, looking rather unrepentant. He might as well do what he wanted now since he'd be suffering later.
I only read one with Shanta, I just feel safer carrying it around. "No offense taken blondie, considering fairytales are never even about damn fairies."

Muna looked a little amused by Averill's comments, feeling a bit relaxed now. It would be bad if Averill was the curious type and read the thing out loud. Muna had learned his lesson from messing with the thing with Shanta.
                      Thanks

With that he twisted a little back around, tugging open the drawstring bag around his neck. He peered into it for a few moments, picking out an orange marble carefully. He fiddled with it, nimbly weaving it through the spaces in between his fingers. Muna seem quite talented at the task, never dropping the object. Granted it was about the size of Bijan's head, making it easier to hold onto.

He mulled over the prospect of practicing with it -- his original reason for coming to the study hall in the first place -- but found himself a little hesitant to do it in front of Averill. The prospect of creating a lumos in front of somebody his own age who was far ahead of him poked too harshly at Muna's pride. With his other hand he signed, glancing at what Averill had brought to the desk.
So, what are you studying for

Averills eyes widened.
"A demon!!?" He would have yelled if not for the muffling spell. As it turned out, his voice stayed the same quiet volume, it just raised a few points in pitch. Meanwhile, Muna seemed to have turned around and begun fiddling with a ball. He placed a hand on the other kids shoulder and forcefully swiveled him around to face the raging dwarf boy.
"Why on EARTH would you be summoning a demon!? WHERE would you even learn to do that? What kind of freaking firstyear do you think you are, that you could handle it? Don't you know how DANGEROUS that is?" His body language practically exploded, though his voice stayed soft.

He sat down again.
He didn't even realize he'd stood up.

Averill took a deep breath. "And who the heck is 'End'?" He raised an eyebrow "Thats either a bad translation of a pretty bloody strange name."

He nodded at Bijan, completely agreeing with the fairy. "And what, aren't you meant to be his guardian angel or something? Why didn't you freaking talk them out of it?"

The rough movement made Muna flinch in surprise, and he dropped the marble he had been fiddling with. It dropped onto the floor with a muffled 'thump', but Muna was too distracted by the angry look on Averill's face. He didn't look particularly afraid or shocked, just...surprised.

He knew the Ekat student was a fairly straight laced person when it came to dangerous things, but Muna hadn't actually expected him to care so much. He waited patiently until Averill sat down, leaning down to pick up the marble he had dropped while Bijan spoke. The fairy was bristling, now fluttering in between Muna and Averill like he could stop the dwarf.
"It wasn't Muna's idea alone!" The fairy argued. "Also I did try to stop them. A tiny little guy like me can't exactly use force on things larger than me, you know. They just ignored me. Especially Shanta because she has a personal vendetta against me or some s**t."

Muna stretched back up, placing the marble onto the table. It rolled until it hit the edge of one of Averill's books, reflecting in the light of the sun from the window. Sorry, Muna signed. The elf didn't look flustered at all. But nothing happened and I managed to stop it from hurting Shanta, so I don't think there is much use being angry about it now. Muna pat Averill's arm lightly for a moment, hand barely brushing up against the other just in case his temper was still running.

You're a pretty good guy for doing it anyway though, Averill. Muna hadn't intended it to be a compliment more than it had just simply come out as an afterthought.

Muna brightened up a little at the mentioning of End. That's really his name. He's this Jantus second year who wears a gas mask all the time and never talks about himself, he's really cool! And nice. And strong.

Averill fought the very teenage urge to turn cold and say 'whatever', closing his eyes and scrunching and unscrunching his fists, then relaxing. When Muna touched his arm, he would have felt the boy was quite tense.

He took a moment to sort out his thoughts, staring absentmindedly at the large marble.
"Bijan, are you like, bonded to Munas side? Couldn't you go like, tell a teacher?" He muttered, still staring, It was probably useless anyway. They were a fairly dysfunctional pair already and he doubted they'd need another reason to fight. "Or at least tell someone else, so they can knock some sense into them?" He added, as an afterthought.

He slumped a little and turned to Muna, looking the other boy dead in the eye, but his voice was more level now.
"But something DID happen. You lost your wand. And that may cause you to fail some of your subjects, unless you immediately begin studying channeling or buy a new wand." He looked down at his textbook, pretending to read it, but hardly focusing. The comment about End just made him feel like more of an outsider than before- though it would make sense he didn't know a secondyear from another house.

"I thought you were smarter than to just mess around with dangerous s**t for kicks." He glared at his textbook page. Muna had avoided explaining why he did it, and that was fine. Other dwarf boys didn't need a reason for playing with dynamite other than 'its fun' and look where it got them. It was fine. Thats just fine. Dynamite takes peoples limbs, demons take peoples....souls? We can construct prosthetics, so magic can probably fix whatever s**t demons ******** up. They can be scarred for life but whatever. Its their dumb choice.

Wow, he really was angry. Muna blinked at him in surprise, wondering why Averill had become so upset. It wasn't like he was involved in the situation, why would the Ekat care so much? Muna wondered offhandedly if dwarves were more community based or something. That kind of thing seemed like a lot of trouble.

Bijan was silent for a moment, watching Averill. He seemed to be sizing up the boy, though his expression gave nothing away.
"Yeah," He said. " I could. When you find somebody who will take a fairy seriously, come find me, kid." While his words were crass, Bijan's tone was more tired than anything else.

Muna was a little surprised when Averill turned to look him straight in the eyes, but ended up shrugging at his statement.
The wellbeing of someone is more important than my grades, He replied simply. Muna picked up the marble, rolling it in his palms a little. For some reason, Averill's own angry attitude had somehow settled him. Besides, with or without my wand, I'm a useless first year.

With that his free hand fell, and Muna's eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the marble. He had been shrugging away from trying to use them as a replacement for his wand, but Averill's irritation had inspired him to face up to his responsibilities.

A dim light -- barely even noticeable -- grew inside the marble and pulsed mildly before sputtering out completely. Muna's shoulders, which had gone tense in slight anticipation, relaxed. He set the marble back down and peered at Averill in curiosity.
I'm sorry for doing something dangerous, Averill. I really am, so don't be angry, okay? Being so empathetic will make your blood pressure rise.

Averill wondered briefly if fairies felt compromised or ignored often. It was impossible to ignore Bijan, because he was a loudmouth and also Munas translator- but maybe he was just compensating? He knew they didn't have a place on the council, but he wondered whether elves or dwarves advocated for them. He knew there weren't many fairies in the undercities, so he would have thought elves would stand up for fairies... but then again, maybe they were just classed as too minor to get a say.
It was hardly worth pondering at this point in time, though.

"The wellbeing of someone wouldn't have been in danger if you didn't do that in the first place." Averill retorted, still staring at his textbook.
He didn't state anything about the usefulness comment. He believed was up to individuals to make themselves feel useful- therefore it wasn't Averills job to reassure the whitehaired boy.

When Muna sincerely apologized, he just slid into a face-down position on the textbook and stayed there. He WAS getting all emotional about stuff, and that was frowned upon.
His voice (extra muffled) grumbled out in reply.
"Being empathetic isn't what is making me angry. Empathetic is to feel what you are feeling. Which apparently is nothing much at all. Know the meaning of words before you use them." He corrected his classmate in a tired, know-it-all kind of way.
"I'm just being...Ugh." He couldn't finish the sentence, because he wasn't quite sure what he was. Stressed, probably. Worried? Definitely, and not just towards Muna. Homesick? Probably a little. Angry? Probably a bunch of that. Maybe even a little bitter that he hadn't been involved in anything. Frustrated, certainly, that he couldn't do anything about Vivians absence or Munas failing grades or Ellas impenetrable shyness. "...Just being a bunch of things."
He pressed his forehead on the cool pages of the book, wishing he could just fall into the text and not have to think about anything.

Muna was beginning to think that Averill was less angry at him and moreso at things in general, which was a bit of a relief because Muna wasn't used to having people angry at him for things that didn't concern them.

He shrugged at Averill's argument, not bothering to offer a rebuttal. Muna had a feeling he wouldn't be able to change Averill's opinion anyways. No point in trying.

Muna watched as Averill smushed his face onto the textbook, mildly entertained by the way his face squished up onto the pages. He barely caught onto Averill's definition of the word 'empathetic', thinking again that Averill certainly suited the Ekaterina house. It wasn't like Averill was wrong about Muna feeling much, so the elf boy just ended up shrugging again.

Oh, Muna signed after a moment. He hesitated after a moment, a little unsure on what else to say. It was probably his duty to help Averill feel better or whatever, but Averill hadn't exactly explained what he was upset about. Muna was unsure which way to tackle the subject. To be honest I don't really know what you're trying to say, but if it's something out of your control then you shouldn't bother yourself about it until you figure out a way you can do something about it.

Muna tapped his fingers onto the desk again, figuring that it was probably time for a change of subject.
I heard your house organized a trip recently, are you going to go?
