Well, it's certainly great.

The Great Hall is a huge, open room that's reserved for special occasions, like school balls (though for some reason those always end up outside) and the winning house's event. In the school's few hundred years of existence, it has seen monks, students, scholars, lords, ladies, kings, queens, hormonal teenagers breaking down, drunk teenagers that snuck in Chateau Romani, and more than one angry animal attack.

Of course, angry animal attacks haven't happened for a while.

Obviously it's empty now, but you know that when there's an event it'll be decorated lavishly with the appropriate decorations. You wonder if there'll be another dance this year.

Nah, probably not. Bad things always happen at dances.

Welcome to the Great Hall!

This was literally one of the only times Sylvia had actually made it to a school event.

From the looks of it, she didn't seem to be too thrilled about it -- in fact, the frown on Sylvia's face told the exact opposite. Honestly she would really prefer to hang out in the dorms and get some work done when there was nobody around to watch her, but the bad feeling that had been nagging in her head ever since Vivian's return hadn't left her.

Sylvia wandered around aimlessly, watching students enjoy the little events from afar with a smile on her face. She wasn't sure if she was particularly interested in doing anything of the such herself -- after all, Sylvia had intended on coming just in case anything...bad happened.

Mostly, she was just wandering around. In between the pages of the book she was using as a prop (the skull happened with the help of some of the teachers) was the worn out paper she had received from the merchant. Sylvia was having a ridiculous amount of trouble with it -- the runes still looked ridiculously familiar to her, but she couldn't remember where exactly she had seen them. She had hoped that bringing it with her to the festival would allow her to unlock some hidden secret within it, but Sylvia was still with no leads. The research on black magic and taint was beginning to prove itself the only thing profitable so far to her.

Still, the runes really did look familiar -- Sylvia squinted at them for a moment, utterly unaware of the world around her. Her shoulder shoved into a pumpkin as she walked by it, ignoring the little screech of rage it gave her.

Jingle, jingle. Naomi frowned. This costume had a lot of jingly bits, and some fringe-y bits too. Judging from Naomi's face and cheap-ish costume, she didn't want to be here any more than Sylvia, but being house rep, it would be bad if she didn't make an appearance. Plus, she wanted to keep her house in the running for points. She certainly didn't want to fall behind, that would be disastrous. At least she could count on Averill to do any fetch quests the teachers sent out.

Naomi spied Sylvia from across the hall, walking in circles, with a trail of... what was hopefully fake fire around her feet. This was a surprise. Naomi had expected Sylvia to... well, not be here. She frowned. Something was wrong. Or something was going to be wrong, and Sylvia just had a nose for danger. Well, seeing as Naomi didn't particularly care for... socializing, she jingled her way over to Sylvia.

"Did you get lost on the way to your dorm, Miss Wood?" Naomi asked as she matched Sylvia's pace. "It's rare to see you at a school event, you know. Perhaps you've decided to come out and talk to people for once?"

The arrival of company was enough to surprise Sylvia into shoving into another pumpkin. This one gave a happy squeal, spinning a couple of times before it realigned itself. The frown on Sylvia's face wiped off -- she hadn't expected for anyone to actually come up and talk to her. Sylvia rarely interacted with other students, so she had almost forgotten that there was someone with enough guts to actually approach her.

Plastering on the smile she was in habit of wearing, Sylvia arched an eyebrow at Naomi.
"Hah, I wish it was a matter of gettin' lost." She drawled, readjusting the hold of the book in her hand. The fire around her flickered, following her footsteps as she walked and fading away when she got too far. It probably would have been better to get a fake summoning circle or something, but Sylvia was too cheap for that kind of thing.

Sylvia's eyes scanned their premises, making sure nobody was around before she sighed tiredly and ruffled her hair.
"You could say I got a bad feeling and wasn't able to keep away," She responded dryly. "How was the catacombs trip, by the way? Find anything of interest?" It was a veiled question, of course. Sylvia was interested in any new information on Vivian, and above that interested in the runes. She doubted Naomi had any information about the latter, but internally she hoped that they hadn't done something boring like go through one of the regular paths.

While Sylvia was waiting, she inspected Naomi's costume. Her eyes ran over the costume the other girl was wearing, eyebrows arching. Wasn't Naomi a rich girl? She really hadn't tried at all this time. A slight smile of amusement crossed Sylvia's face.

Naomi snorted; really, how blind did you have to be to run into one of the pumpkins? They were practically stationery, for crying out loud. Still, being able to surprise Sylvia? That was a first. Either Naomi was getting better at sneaking (which really wasn't likely with all the jingly s**t she had on) or Sylvia was really distracted right now.

Naturally, Naomi wasn't fooled by Sylvia's trademark grin. She never was. She ignored the obvious banter and listened to what she was really saying instead. A bad feeling? "Makes two of us, then," she murmured. "The Catacombs trip was interesting, I suppose. We started excavating that tunnel by the Ruins - you know, the one that's been blocked off by an avalanche for the last few years?" She watched Sylvia carefully, trying to read her expression. Did Sylvia know something about the incident? Possibly. "Tunnel led to some big chamber with a dead summoning circle and a saltwaterfall," she continued. "And Blondie found maybe eight pounds of coins... coins with runes on them." She thought a little bit more.

"Ah yes... she seemed rather interested in other Catacomb entrances, now that I think about it. But that's irrelevant, I'm sure you agree?" No, Naomi didn't think she agreed. Any behavior from Vivian was worth noting at this point, no matter how small it was. It could be just a curious first year, or it could be something different. You never knew. Naomi also ignored Sylvia's glance; this was a costume party, and she certainly wasn't going to spend more than she had to on anything but. She could save the cash for when there was a fancy dress event.

Recognition flashed in Sylvia's eyes, and she made no effort to hide it. She knew exactly what area Naomi was talking about, but whether it was her business to talk about it was something different. "Right, the saltwater falls." She nodded, tugging a hand through her ponytail once more. "I remember the incident that happened there, but you'd be better off getting information from one of the participants of that incident. The first year that was involved in it still goes here. Third year now, I think."

If Naomi was smart -- and Sylvia knew she was -- then it wouldn't be a problem for the girl to find out who Sylvia was talking about anyways. After all, they weren't exactly the best actor.

She plastered her smile back on, intrigued by the mentioning of the coins.
"You wouldn't happen to remember if they looked anything similar to this, do you?" Sylvia motioned to her book, turning the page back to the rune parchment. She had instinctively flipped it over when she felt somebody else's presence, but since Naomi already knew what it was there was no problem.

She laughed a little, nodding in agreement to what Naomi mentioned.
"Good to see the first years are curious types," Sylvia responded lightly, making a mental note about it. Sylvia had a feeling she was going to have to rely on Naomi for information on Vivian; the fourth year wasn't exactly the most of social of people, let alone have the amount of free time it took for a trip with other people. She was already pushing it when she planned on attending the two week halloween festival.

Something told Sylvia that she was going to have to attend more of these from now on.

She knew it. Sylvia did know something. Naomi frowned. Someone in her year? Well, there weren't a lot of those, and the possibilities starting running through her head. She could only come up with a couple names. A smile curled Naomi's lips; this might prove promising. "I'll ask around, then," she said lightly. "There'll be another expedition or two in the future to clear away the rubble and lay down a path."

Naomi glanced at the parchment. "Very similar in fact," she commented. "You copied those from the Ruins, yes? I think Mutie sketched some of his own." She nodded her head towards him. "Of course, they aren't very useful if you can't translate them. None of the texts in the library or the commons are any help?"

Of course they weren't. Naomi was willing to bet Sylvia had combed over every book in the commons and the library and found nothing. Probably the library, too. Hmm. She frowned. There had to be some source somewhere with information about the runes. They just needed to find it.

Sylvia nodded. It would be nice to go on the expedition and work with others if she didn't end up getting a cold again, but the area Naomi was talking about wasn't exactly one Sylvia was in the mood to revisit. It was too bad she hadn't been able to join the first one. Sylvia was an absolute mess when it came to colds, and she hadn't been very lucky this year when it came to them. She wasn't a big fan of cold weather, and had often suffered in Germany during the winter as well.

"Well, if you advertise it enough I suppose you'll find the answer out yourself." Sylvia remarked. Her eyes roamed around the Great Hall, unable to get rid of the anxious feeling still swelling in the base of her neck. She had been hoping actually attending the festival would make her feel less anxious, but the exact opposite had occurred.

The longer she staid, the more she expected something to happen. The girl desperately hoped it was just paranoia. She half listened to Naomi's words, frowning a little at her confirmation.
"I expected as much," The fourth year muttered. She had a heavy feeling that they were going to have to do something dangerous in order to get more information on the paper the Merchant gave her, but what kind of danger that included made Sylvia a little wary.

There was an area in the ruins, she knew, that had been blocked off longer than any other. It gave one the feeling that it was impossible to be scaled, but Sylvia had a strong feeling that whatever rune-based spell the Merchant had given her would have some sort of origin in that part of the Catacomb. There were just too many hurdles to jump before Sylvia could actually explore the place. Not including the fact that she probably needed to get a group of students to go with her and that the only theory she had on getting inside was moving the rubble in front of the entrance with elemental power.

She had a feeling she was going to need to practice a lot.

"I have a guess on where we might be able to find a lead, but I'm sure you ain't all that keen about doing it yet," Sylvia replied. She glanced around, realizing suddenly how hungry she was.

Naomi scratched her arm; man, this costume was itchy. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to buy a stupid genie costume, even if it had been cheap. "I suppose I will, though I suspect I'm not going to find out the answer for a while." She certainly couldn't rely on Sylvia for answers; the way Sylvia's grades were running, she'd graduate early. "After all, something's bound to happen that'll throw everything in disarray, yes? It's a party. s**t always goes down at parties." Naomi spoke from experience. She hadn't been to a single ball at Merlin that hadn't been interrupted by some crazy happenstance.

"If the library, the commons, and Flare's collection doesn't have anything, then perhaps the only remaining answer lies in the Ruins themselves," Naomi commented. It made sense, of a sort; the first people to find the Ruins might have left something behind that since remained inaccessible. Naomi hadn't heard of someone entering that part of the Ruins since she started Merlin, or, well, ever. It was one of the mysteries of the school. "You learned Divinity recently, yes? Perhaps you can put that to good use. I doubt you didn't master it." For once, Naomi's words were sincere; Sylvia always seemed to master things she needed to in an instant, and if she considered Divinity important, well, Naomi wouldn't be surprised if Sylvia had mastered one of the most challenging spells taught in Charms class.

"A lead... hm. Depends on where you're looking, Miss Wood." For a moment, Naomi considered her own library at home; her father had amassed a huge collection of tomes on dark magic. Which was surprising, seeing as how he didn't carry a single drop of magic in his body. Then again, considering her father's position, it wasn't surprising at all. She hesitated. "I... could be of help, but I'm not sure if I can get it to you in time," she said finally. "Consider it a last resort, though. I believe you can crack the code eventually, Sylvia, you've always been good at that."

Shanta swooped in, grinning ear to ear. She was lacking her carpet, but in return she sported a glimmering pair of wings, an illusion cast by the pendant hanging around her neck. Wow, this freedom of mobility was great! Sure, her legs were dangling uselessly below her, but she could still fly and get around! The magic wasn't permanent, but that certainly didn't mean she wasn't going to enjoy it.

Still, she felt sort of bad for not taking Averill's advice about the hoop skirt. It really had been a great idea! But when she'd mentioned this to Miss Pilon, and Miss Pilon recommended this... well, Shanta had practically jumped on the idea. She was pretty sure she looked like an insult to fairies, but she didn't care. Bijan could shove it up his little fairy behind if he didn't like it, she looked great and she felt great and this was amazing!!!

Shanta ignored the two Ekaterinas, deep in a serious conversation, and swooped over to the tables, picking some chocolates from one of the tables and unwrapping one. Mmm, she didn't really celebrate Halloween back home, but it sure was fun! A night of costumes, scares, and sweet treats? Seriously, how much more fun could you get? She was also eager to see other costumes and started scanning the room, grinning from ear to ear about all the incredible costumes.

End entered the hall in his usual get up. He really didn't have much in the way of resources to make a Halloween costume but he guessed he didn't really need one. He'd been told a handful of times in the past that his mask fit into the Halloween feel so he guessed it was enough.

He looked around the room. There were a lot of activities but he wasn't quite sure how many he would participate in. Not that he didn't want to get points for his house, of course he wanted to help as best he could, just that the activities didn't really suit him exactly. He wasn't in a costume, he couldn't really bob for apples and he wasn't quite sure how he'd go about scaring a teacher at all. His options for point collecting were definitely not that great.

He decided his best option for now was to just hang out for a bit. He spotted Naomi and Sylvia talking but he supposed he shouldn't interrupt them. Then he spotted Shanta looking happy floating around with wings. He heard people mention that some smiles could be contagious, Shanta's smile at the moment seemed that way. He was certainly feeling happy seeing her so happy, even if he couldn't express it with a smile himself. He approached. "Shanta," he called with a wave. "I really like your costume."

Honestly, Muna had no idea where to go next. He was a little intimidated by both Ari and Gage, and had no inclination to check out the areas they were hovering over. The bunny-boy wandered the great hall aimlessly, picking out lemon candy from the amounts distributed on tables. It was the only type of candy Bijan would let him eat.

                      "Muna,"
Bijan hissed. "Look at that goddamn pair of wings Shanta has on her back. That is just ridiculous. Does the girl think you can just attach a pair of wings and call yourself a fairy, how offensive can you goddamn get--" Shanta! Muna could go over to Shanta.

Popping another lemon candy in his mouth and momentary feeling a bit happy that he could eat it while speaking, Muna went over to go say hi. He didn't actually realize End was there as well until it was too late, and Muna's hands tugged on the front of his shorts anxiously as he approached.

Hi, you look super cute Shanta

Shanta grinned and waved back, flying a little bit higher. "Hi End! Thanks, I like how you're... um..." Crap, End wasn't wearing a costume. Shanta had to think fast. "...how you dressed up as yourself! It's a great costume!" Saved. Well, probably not, but close enough. "Professor Pilon came up with the idea, isn't it great? I can do a lot of things I can't with my carpet now!" To prove her point, she turned and tilted backwards until she was arched over, staring End in the face... er, mask upside-down. "You look pretty funny from this angle," Shanta giggled.

She heard someone else approaching and flipped herself upright. Shanta turned around to come face to face with... Muna? He didn't.

He did. Muna was dressed as a bunny, and Shanta had to admit it suited him disturbingly well. She cleared her throat. "Thanks, Muna! I like your costume! It's looks, er, great!" He probably didn't want to be called cute, even though he was ridiculously so. Behind Muna, Shanta spied Bijan and her lips curled into a grin. "Hi Bijan! Do you like my costume? Isn't it great?" She spun around for added effect. "Are you guys enjoying yourselves so far? I'm surprised nothing's blown up yet." She glanced at End. "Something caught on fire at least twice last year, right?"

At that moment, several owls flew into the Great Hall. One flew to Professor Runesteam, who, trying to look as dignified as possible in his ridiculous costume, took the message attached to it and read it. His eyes narrowed. "Oi, you kids!" he yelled at no student in particular. "Don't get in trouble, alright? I'll be right back." He turned on his heel and left the room.

He was soon followed by Caedah Pilon. Then Amara Ambercutter. Then Josephine Eastwood. Then Kura Morioka. Shortly the entire Great Hall was devoid of professors.

Of course s**t went down at parties. Still, Sylvia had always been able to hear about what happened later and feel no particular regret about coming. Maybe the events happening around school had just made her a little more antsy.

Sylvia stayed silent at Naomi's words; she didn't really have much else to say. Naomi was right about her learning Divinity; even if she hadn't perfected it by now, the sudden need for the spell would probably push Sylvia forward on acing it. She was beginning to think that maybe it would be the best idea to just brave the Catacombs alone. She had done it before -- what difference would exploring a new area make?

A lot, but that wasn't the point.

Sylvia couldn't help but laugh a little at Naomi's words.
"Always been good at that, hm." Tone contemplative, Sylvia traced the edges of the rune before turning the page of her book once more. "I'm flattered to have gained such a high opinion from you, Naomi."

She would be keeping Naomi's offer in mind. Sylvia tugged up the edges of her leggings, promising herself that she would travel the catacombs after the halloween event was over.

It wasn't like there would be anyone interested in travelling with her anyways.

Sylvia opened her mouth to say something -- some parting words, maybe, or the start of some small talk -- but the arrival of owls made her stop in her tracks. A wry smile crawled up on her face as the teachers left one by one.
"Looks like our waiting game is over, eh?"
