It's set into the side of a cliff, right next to the river.
It looks as though a great beast bit a huge chunk out of the side of the cliff. The outside of the cave is roughly shaped and looks almost threatening. It exudes an aura of stay away. However, if it's raining and you're pretty far from the school gates, you're probably going to ignore all the bad vibes and run inside anyway.
The cave is dank and dark, and smells like wet moss. The transition on the ground from dirt to stone is so sudden you might stumble. If you light up your wand, you'll see rock, rock, and more rock. The inside of a cave isn't very interesting, you must admit.
A few creatures skitter here and there in the cave. It goes deeper than you think; some students swear that it's possible to walk so deep you run into underground fairies. Some students even say they've found a way into the Catacombs. That's ridiculous, though. You've never seen any official record showing this cave as a Catacomb entrance. They must be lying.
